Damn, this genre has been growing on me more and more. Shmups are awesome aren't they?

They have their "wholesome, pure" feel to them and they can really test your hand-eye coordination and all that.

Radiant Silvergun is

Do you think in the near future, the genre may be revived in some small fashion? One can only hope.

I sure hope they make a comeback. When I think of any type of games that can be called pure games, I think of shooters.

Shooter's are pure twitch gaming. What gaming is all about. Memories of playing Galaxian in the arcades come to mind.

Pure twitch gaming is a good point of putting it.

My shooter memories really sprang about when the Genesis came into existence. I was about 6 years old at the time, and I remember many nights watching my older friends (ages 11 and 12) playing the lights of Thunder Force III and Gairies. I remember my little mind being blown away. I also remember how difficult and impossible shooters looked.

They gave me a shot one night and I got crushed in a blink of an eye.

I never much thought about shooters from then til 2001... when I bought Layer Section (Galactic Attack) and it took me back to a time of innocence, cliche as it may sound.

Recently, all I been hunting are shmups...

Many gamers will never understand why we like shooters. That's cool with me... but boy are they missing out. Very few genres send jitters through my body like a good shmup will.

Hey Steve, have you beaten Raident Silvergun? If not then let me just say that it is worth the effort. I have yet to get Ikagura yet as I am trying to say a little money and have been working lately, but Raident Silvergun is without question one of the best shooter's ever.

Favorite old school shooter, Gyruss. Favorite new school shooter, Radiant Silvergun.

Gamefan, I liked Batsugun too. Many people it seems, think Batsugun's way too uninspired... I don't care it plays well and that's all that matters to me. It's a good shooter. I like that "IceMan" character the most. He says something like "Two o'clock!" I'm probably off though. :)

Guile, yeah I beat Radiant Silvergun once. On arcade mode of course. I just wanted to see the end boss and the stages.

The last boss is crazy. Talk about sure-fire death. That diamond rain is nuts. Who could dodge through that successfully without dying once? Must be a shooter God!

Overall I like RS much more in the Saturn Mode.

R$ is an awesome shooter.
But my fave has to be the little brother, Ikaruga. Quite the package of style and gameplay. A beautiful little piece of art.

Other faves? Hm. Gradius series, and Darius Gaiden :)

oooh and blazing lazers! bad ass soundtrack!

The succes of Ikaruga shows that this kind of game is not dead. I have seen a new shooter on naomi which is called border down and which will be released soon, that's an another proof. The new dodonpachi games knew a lot of succes to. The shooters are not dead.

Yeah, I'm looking foward to investing a lot of time into DDP Dai-Ou-Jou when it is (finally...) released for PS2. I'd love to be able to one-credit that game (or even the first one, just to get to the second loop), instead of working on high scores ;)

Definately have to agree, shooters are not dead, they just need to reinvent the wheel so to speak when new ones come out, and bring in new elements for them to be successful. Although tried and true gameplay never takes away points from me in my book!

For me, it's vertical shooters like Truxton, Raiden, Shienryu, Soukyugurentai, Battle Garegga, etc.

For me, its always been Taito Shooters like Raystorm and G-Darius, and Psyko shooters like Gunbird and Strikers 1945.
Radian Silvergun never really 'clicked' with me - I guess the initial difficulty was just too intimidating.

I really wish there was an easy way for someone in england to get hold of PC games like RallyRaid, Shooters Solitude and so on, anyone got any advice? (and I dont just mean download the demo)

Speaking about shooters, How do you rate Gigawing on DC? I find it quite impossible on the last two levels, What's your opinion?

I figure that Gigawing's last couple levels must be able to be done witout loosing a life, but it must depend on exact movement of yer ship and using the repel-shield at exactly the right time.

But I see your point - it does seem pretty much impossible - I've certainly not been able to do it.
