Wanted to post a topic about it...

Today's stuff isn't what it used to be. It's too much R&B (although I like R&B) and too little samples in the songs. Take a guy like Ja Rule for example. He got a 2 or 3 song sample, uses a 808 beat and it sounds weak. I guess every funk sample has been taken. Although I like Nelly's song with Kelly Rowland Dilemma. But it's not hip hop or rap, it's a R&B song.

I miss group like PE who had the Bomb Squad as their producers. There was like 10 samples in the original beat (including drum loops). And Bomb Squad maked it sound perfect.

You also have Eminem (Dre's Puppet) who can rap but doesn't think half of what he says which put him in the category "STFU if you can't back it up". I know 2Pac died because of this but at least he knew and did what he was saying not like that little tatooed punk. And Dre can't come up with better beats nowadays?? I remember NWA pretty well and Dre's solo albums which were quite strong. Kim_Kaphwan said something the other day about rap being shitty since 96 and I totally agree with him.

Anyway, seems like the only thing important today is making money and nothing else (it applies to everything, almost). I know it's important but if you do make something good and get paid for it, now that's something due because you work hard to get it. Pissed me off those so-called gangster rap groups who have never held an AK in their life but talks about it like it's their best friend.

Ok, vent finished :)

I'm white too. Guns don't discriminate, they aren't racists you know ;)

My SKS has never let Me down !!!

Oops, sorry...I wasn't trying to 'hijack' this thread; My bad!!

Back on topic. I too grew up with PE, Ice-T, NWA, Boogie Down, etc. I dug it. Hardly any of the new stuff sounds like that old shit. It's progression. I dig it.

That's your opinion and that's fine with me. But you have to admit that they are using a lot less samples than before. However, just to let you know that the beats of today are old too because they use the Roland T808 drum machine which was built in the 80's. Although I think that both the 808 and 909 are great drum machines, I never really like them for rap, only R&B.

I liked it between critical beatdown and bizarre ride 2 the pharcyde, but everything after don't really do it for me - it's more about image and lifestyle than the music nowadays.

Agreed....However, just because a drum machine was 'made' in the 80's, doesnt really mean the beats it produces are '80`s beats', does it ?? I'm not being a smartass, I'm just a half brain-dead ex-drummer Who's not up to snuff on the 'electric' side of music too much anymore.

The neptunes fucked it up. Big style.
The minimalistic utter crap that is being churned out today is just horrible to listen too and the girls in the videos don't even look good anymore. The only good tune released in the last couple of years is 'next episode' by dre and snoop.

I myself usually never listen to hip hop as I listen mostly to House and movie soundtracks but I'm a big fan of warreng's early work (yeah I know it's whimpy but it's still very good :D ) and together with Nate Dogg they were unbeatable. It's that special sound of the 'good old days' and the tunes were 'phatter' in general.

Short and to the point: the new stuff is suck

*listens to 'Warren G feat. Nate Dogg - Nobody Does It Better'*

Edit: I just discovered 'Goldie Loc f/ Snoop Dogg - let's roll'... it's really good :D

true, but are you talking about hiphop in general or hiphop music? You can't tell me that the muscial side of things has always been the weakest aspect of hiphop music....

I bought the first issue of hip hop connection back in the 80s so I guess I must have liked hip hop once. But I agree , 10-12 years ago someone like LL cool J was called a "sell out" and weak for mixing RNB into his raps and singing about love and stuff. But in the last 5 years plus thats pretty much most of what U hear , like Ja Rule. Most these guys eminem and ja rule are like 28-29 so they know where rap comes from, and they no what theyre doing.NWA and Tupac were the men.I think origionally NWA had 29 members for the 1st album in 86 (they appear on the cover)eminem is the most fake faggot cocksucker to hit rap music, he cracks me up, he looks like a geek, one minute he's acting all tough and macho and the next he's embracing elton john in pictures going all over the world. And that "broken family" story is so tired.
The current mode, thats existed for the last 10 years or so for rnb/hip hop was pioneered by a group out of Staten Island New York called the Force MDS.Some of their stuff was pretty amazin for its time.Doowop/Hip hop.Trevor nelson did a special on MTV about em last year.
