Semi-technical question: Audio to PC?

Hey there people. So I got this video camera, and I've been fiddling around making short movies and stuff... It's damned cool. I got a video capture card, a very nice one at that, so I can get the video in and edit it and stuff... Really nice. Up until now I haven't had any use for the audio I recorded or planned on recording, it's been all silent stuff and I added music to the background.

I know there must be a way to get sound into my computer other than putting a microphone up to a TV playing the audio I need... The capture card I got does not have audio in ports, and even the ones that I've been looking at now don't have a seperate composite audio jack, they all have jacks that look like headphone jacks for the audio... Which got me to thinking, I think my sound card has one of those. So I checked, and my sound card does have a headphone jack shaped plug, with a circle facing inward (input I'm guessing) and one with a circle and an arrow facing outward (output I'm guessing). However, my camera only outputs audio through composite audio, not a headphone jack type thing...

So my question is, how the fuck do I go about getting the audio into my computer? Is there a convertor I can get? What is that input thing on my soundcard for?

This is a really important thing for me I think, if I can't get audio in it really limits the kind of films I can make... Plus I've already talked to a couple bands volunteering to tape their shows from the crowd, realizing now that I don't know how to get the audio... It has to be possible though. Audio should be a million times easier than video to capture...

If anybody knows what I can do, I would really appreciate it if you'd respond here. I apologize if this post seems rushed, I typed it out really fast as I'm really tired and need to get to bed. I just wanted to get a post up so people could maybe see it sooner, getting me more responses... I hope to hear from somebody soon.

go to Radioshit.

Ask inept clerk to find you an Stereo RCA to stereo miniplug cable.

It should have two female RCA jacks on one end, a stereo miniplug on the other.

Give him the 2.00 it should cost.

Voila! Now you can safely input auido to your PC.

Be sure to use line out, as some camcorders pre-amp their sound. (too hook directly to a TV)

Is it possible to connect to your computer via firewire?

I'm assuming you have a DV camcorder.

Otherwise, you can access the line-in input on the sound card as daisuke mentioned.

Ahhh... Okay. I thought so. One thing though, that last bit confuses me... My camcorder doesn't have anything that says "line out" it just has something that says "AV out". Is this something different? Will this not work? Is there any way around it? I really hope that will still work...

Wasabi, nope it's not a DV camcorder. It's just a regular Hi8. That's what's so cool about this capture card, it gets any video signal from any analog device... Probably even a Neo. That might be cool... Heh.

What do you have for A/V out? is it a regular DIN (like the NEO), a mini DIN (like the genesis 2) ,RF (like the NES), or it's own specialty? Maybe it came with a cable? It might use it's own proprietary plug, with A/V on the other end. It would then be the simple task of plugging the audio from the end of that into the converter.

Describe the jack, and I can tell you.

Maybe a model #?

Okay, cool... A response. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I'm pretty sure it uses its own proprietary plug. One end looks pretty much like a headphone jack, only it's gold, and the other end is your standard yellow and white RCA jacks...

So you're telling me I just go to Radio Shack and get that adapter and I'm in business? Fuckin' sweet.

You've helped me out immensely man, I can't thank you enough.

As it stands now, it pretty much sounds like I'm all set, but if there's anything else you know please let me know...

Thanks again man. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
