I wouldn't really consider "Maximum PC" to be a gaming magazine in the purest sense, but it kicks ass for what it is (which is a PC enthusiast's magazine). The only "pure" gaming mag I read these days is EGM. I used to be an avid GameFan/GameGo reader, but it looks like the days of that legacy are finally done for.

Amen to that, SSM was the best official mag ever.. and back when CVG was good too. Those were the days..

Zero/Game Zone used to be good too, and Super Play was always worth a read.
Almost forgot Mean Machines (before it split off into 2 seperate mags, and had most of the SSM staff)

Nowadays, Edge is the only one I go out of my way to read.

SSM was just so good. They were real gamers, that was obvious, they loved 2D fighters, Nights, VF2.... they were the best. Hell, they even covered SNK stuff! I still have the last ever issue readily availiable in my room, just to remember how good games mags used to be CVG lost it when they decided to appeal to the main stream gamer.... I remember when Tekken 3 came out, and they said it was very disapointing, but when the PSX version appeared (Just after the Saturn died) they loved it to bits, and wouldn't shut up about it The mag now totally sucks ass. Now I think about it, Mean Machines Sega was excellent as well
