I would have to say AthlonXP. A friend of mine has an overclocked 1500 XP performing nearly equal to a 2 Ghz P4 in benchmarks. Imagine what I will be able to do with a 1900 XP.

athlon xp

hands down

if you look at the annandtech reviews, you can see that a non-overclocked athlonxp 1600 will out perform the pentium 4 2ghz. its really sad for intel, but great for consumers.

i mean an athlon xp 1800 is like $230

and a p4 2ghz is like $300+ (plus you need special ram mobo etc)

amd is the way to go

Athlon XP also despite that I'm about to be running on a P4

Athlon XP, easy.

The Pentium 4 was designed for marketing. It's basically a Pentium 3 core done on a .13 micron wafer instead of the .18 micron. (I think its .13, I'm pretty sure they couldn't get 2Ghz on the .18 micron wafers). All that means is that it's like a P3 that's really overclocked. They did that because Mhz clock speed sells. People are stupid, they don't know that it's more than the Mhz that makes a powerful machine. Hell a G4 is at 800Mhz and it can out do most P4's. Shows you how important clock speed is.

The FPU (Floating Point Unit [stuff needed for 3D calculations and such])sucks compared to the Athlon XP's.

Plus, RAMBUS sucks ass compared to DDR. It's slower and more expensive.

AMD, faster, cheaper, more efficient. Go buy one, NOW!

Peace

athlon xp for sure, if you get a good copper heatsink you won't have a problem with overheating, the only thing i don't like about is how easy it is to crack the core when putting the heatsink on

This is the kind of post that gets locked immediately at AnandTech because all it does is start a flame war

I personally went with a P4 because I'm not patient enough to deal with the numerous issues caused by VIA's shitty chips. The new SiS chipsets look better though, so hopefully AMD will finally have a really good motherboard.

Things will also be different as the clock speeds of the P4 really ramp up. They expect this thing to eventually hit 4Ghz with just air cooling. Granted, higher clock speeds can be used as a marketing ploy, and no doubt Intel will use them, but the performance of Northwood is nothing to sneeze at. Who cares what the clock speed is? Faster is faster.

AMD definitely has the price/performance ratio advantage. I thank AMD for bringing prices down, but I'm sticking with Intel until AMD has motherboards of the same quality and dependability.

It's an endless debate.

When I first built my compuer (August 1999), I was looking at a Pentium II or III. The owner of a local computer shop convinced me to go with a K6-2 instead, and I saved quite a bit of money, and had better performance. I've stuck with AMD since then. When I upgraded I year later I choose a classic Athlon 750, and I couldn't be happier with the stability and price. When I do another major upgrade next year, I'll probably get another AMD and save money once again.

Athlon XP is much faster than Pentium 4 for now. An XP 1600+ which is at 1.4Gz, out performs a 1.7Gz Pentium 4 in pretty much every benchmark there is.

But there is a flipside, Almost every AMD XP DDR motherboard has problems, and are nowhere near as stable as Pentium 4 boards.

All the best AMD DDR boards have the Via chipset in them, Via sucks beyond belief, their "4-1 Drivers" are so terrible it isn't even funny. Not to mention they release a chipset, and 3 monthes later release an "A" revision because the first was so buggy. Way to go screwing the consumer over!

So just get a non via board you ask? Well even the AMD 761 chipset uses a Via southbridge. The SiS 645 is buggy, the yet to be released 745 has issues already from reports.

All that leaves is the nVidia nForce chipset, and all the boards with that have onboard video AND sound, which you'll never use and jacks the price up 60 bucks. Have not heard anything to bad about the nForce, but it's a 1st gen chipset, and their bound to have problems.

But please don't take my word for it, look in any of the AMD motherboard support forums, and you'll see an ocean of "Via Sucks" and other motherboard tech nightmare posts.

Intel on the other hand, have ROCK SOLID motherboards. The Pentium 4 also has DDR memory support now, with the new 478 socket revision of the P4 CPU. There are also a number of rock solid P4 DDR motherboards, the Asus P4B266 for example uses the new i845D intel chipset, which is rock solid.

So it's like this, you can go with an AMD XP which is faster than the P4, and have compatibility issues/nightmares and other problems with the shitty Via motherboards (which are the BEST keep in mind), or go SiS or nForce and cross your fingers.

Or you can get a Pentium 4, which is a bit slower, but offers rock solid stability and compatibility and intels long experience in chipset making.

Personally Thirdkind can attest to, I recently returned my AMD XP 1700+ and motherboard in favor of getting a Pentium 4 and one of the new DDR boards. Since I to had some problems with it, and wanted to get out of the Via Blackhole before my 30 days were up and I couldn't RMA it.

My advice would be, go Pentium 4 with a DDR board combo. Until more good AMD boards come out, it's a waste of time. I feel sorry for AMD, because they make such good CPU's, but have a lot of sucky motherboard support and chipsets.

But please do not buy into the "Faster is better" thing, Yes the XP is faster, but when all the motherboards suck, it isn't worth it. I did buy into it, and after reevaluating the situation, decided to send it back, and go for stability and compatibility over a few more FPS in Quake 3, I mean when your already getting upwards of 200 per second on a geforce 3, who gives a flip, 60 is all you need anyways.

Movies are only at 24FPS, and you don't hear people whining about that.

Not true, Pentium 4 now has DDR and SDRAM motherboards, since the new Socket 478 of the Pentium 4 CPU supports both.

Why anyone would still want SDRAM is beyond me, it's aged, and as for RDRAM, intels contract with them expires this year, and I have seen several reports that said intel is dropping support for RDRAM and going full DDR.

.13 micron

Pentium 4 is .18 micron. The .13 micron Pentium 4's (named Northwoods) don't come out for a few weeks, and only the 2Gz and 2.2Gz chips will feature this.

True, but don't forget, after you buy the CPU, you have to get one of the buggy XP ddr boards to run it on, unless you know something I don't.

It does run cooler, but it's only a few degrees, and you still need a good heatsink, because an XP will burn up in less than 10 seconds with no HSF attatched.

Actually, the Epox (sp?) mobos for the XP's are rock solid when it comes to stability.

Well I know the Epox 8K7A+ is popular with overclockers, and I've seen some say it's rock solid, but I've also seen a lot of people say that it's terrible and they had to RMA it.

I guess it's just who you ask, since I'm sure even the worst boards work perfect for some people.

Nahhhh man. Soyo Dragon +

Best DDR Athlon Mobo out there. It's got built on ATA100 RAID, Built in NIC, everything. It's rock solid. It's so friggin nice man.

Wish I had one, but I'm sticking with my laptop for gaming right now (only bought it a year ago!).

But as for those nForce mobo's, they're kick friggin ass! They have the built in sound and video, but it's a built on GeForce2, I mean unless your doing a really high end gaming box, this card will more than meet your needs, even for gaming. Plus, even though it's built on, there's still a AGP4x slot on there and it disables the onboard video as soon as another card is inplace. Good stuff.

Athlon baby, all the way.

Peace

Asus A7A266 ALi M1647 SktA SDR/DDR ATX Motherboard w/ Audio
266FSB, AGP Pro/4X, ATA/100, 5 PCI, 4-6 USB

its from asus...does that mean its still a via chipset? i forgot

is this mobo anygood? because i remember i went to annandtech and they gave it alot of praise

I'll go with the Athlon. I'm running dual Athlon 1600+ CPU's on a Tyan Tiger. It's awesome. Got the processors for $122 each (retail boxed). Great, cheap dual box.

For some of the stability comments, the Tyan boards have NO stability problems. Rock solid, and no VIA component at all.

AliMagiK sucks ass, it's worse than the Via chips, that board you listed uses the AliMagiK chipset. Stay away.

In short all the XP boards suck right now, doesn't really matter what you buy because all the BEST board have Via, and they suck.

If you really wanna make an XP system, get an nForce, but you'll be paying aound 60 more for that, and you'll probly never use the onboard sound or audio.

If your talking about an Athlon MP dual setup (well thats the only thing you could be talking about), the funny thing about that is, even though the XP is faster than the P4, the Athlon MP dual setups are slower than a Pentium III Xeon dual setup.

BTW as of yesterday, Intel now has the fastest CPU on the market again, the new Northwood Pentium 4 2.2Ghz beat the XP 2000+ in pretty much every benchmark there is.

I don't know how to take that though, since the XP 2000+ is only at 1.6Ghz and the intel chip is at 2.2, but since some here wanna play the "faster is better" card, the 2.2Ghz P4 is now the fastest, so I guess that means AMD sucks and we should all go get P4's right?

Hmmm looks like AMD could have a savior:
http://www.amdmb.com/article-display.php?ArticleID=146

nForce motherboards without the onboard video are shipping this month in the 100-120 dollar price range. That was the only thing stopping me from getting one, because I would never use it and it drove the price near the 200 range.

If the reviews come out decent I might definetly build an XP system after all, since the only thing thats stopping me is I wouldnt be caught dead with a Via MoBo.

Dude, its a built in GeForce2 and you have a AGP slot to upgrade later if for some reason it's NOT ENOUGH PERFORMANCE (how that couldn't be enough.....).

And the Soyo Dragon + is a incredibly good board for Athlon XP's.

Peace
