Seriously...how many people ACTUALLY click on Pop-Up Ads?

I'm not just saying this because they annoy me, because they do and I know it's supposed to be a way to generate revenue and it's a way most places stay cheap/free.

I also know I can use software to stop it.

But my question actually is...how many people see a pop up, go 'oh, that's cool' and click on it?

For the most part I'm sure the advertiser is paying just to be seen, but that whole clicking thing seems to be an integral part.

I for one have been seduced once and only once but an exceedingly cool paintball gun. Most of the time I don't even see them, they pop-up and I alt+F4 them away. If they're a pop-under, I mini-mize all of my windows and close it then.

So it's not so much about who is annoyed by them but who it works on, to the point of: How effective actually are they? Does anyone pay attention or even care? Are they just wasting thier time?

There is this pop-up add for a mini sized camera, it seems to follow me wherever I go. One day I just got tired of it bothering me, so I clicked on it. Nothing I really had any interest in, but it was kind of cool.

But that was one add out of thousands I have seen, not a very effective way of advertisement, more of an annoyance.

Pop up ads, what are those?

I installed Pop Up Stopper because the X10 ads and Casino ads on Yahoo annoyed me. I got the message the first 100 times.....

That damn X10. I'm surprised they haven't found a way to make popup commercials for television shows and videogames yet.

I've accidentally clicked them before, but never intentionally.

I use CTRL+W, same as ALT-F4 (or is it? ;) ) Anyway, I've probably click on it once by mistake. I think all those ads are just a bunch of bullshit... Just like my mailbox, went out for one month, came back with 400 messages of junk.

Nope, can't say that I have. Normally I hear the 'click' when a new window is opening, and just right-click on it's button on the task bar and select close.

I will admit being VERY tempted to, though. Free porn rules!!!

I don't think I've ever seen a pop-up and felt the need to click on it. Ever.

If I ever decided to buy a web cam, I would NEVER fucking buy that goddamn X-10 or X-Cam or whatever it's called, because I see that fucking pop-up more than any other pop-up, bar none. This is when marketing has a reverse/negative effect for a product.

You know, I do need to chime in and say this.

If I go to a site run by someone I know, or run by people I like, I don't hesitate to click a pop up/banner or two.

It can really help.

I kill pop-ups using POW! by AnalogX. When you get a new pop-up, you add it to the kill list and POW! will close that window if it appears again.

Even better is Pop-Up Cop... which kills the pop-up before it even shows up. I tried it once and plan to register it sometime.

Banners and text link advertising I don't really mind nearly as much. I do mind "scumware" like eZula however, and keep some spyware removal tools on hand just in case.

That scumware.com site that LWK mentions is a pretty good one. I learned about RoboForm there and kicked Gator to the curb. RoboForm is true freeware, while Gator is not. There is a Pro version of RF available for $29.99. Check out www.roboform.com.

Heh, I've won two of those Treeloot stuffed monkeys. That's the only time I've clicked on a banner or pop-up before, with maybe a few rare occasions.
