Xbox Controller XXL Dead
11-OCT-02
Eagle-eyed readers may have noted our story about the Xbox/Sega bundle package Microsoft is launching next week. This, as it turns out, is part of a larger shift in Microsoft's strategy—starting with the bundle, the company will gradually phase out the original Xbox controller, packing their systems instead with Controller S from now on. The new strategy, confirmed by Microsoft representatives earlier today, apparently came as a direct result of consumer criticism.
The Xbox's controller has been the target of controversy among game freaks ever since the system came out last November. A random Google search turns up everything from measured criticism ("unwieldy, uncomfortable, and difficult to use") to slightly less measured derision ("Apparently, to own an Xbox, you must have the hands of a large ape"). The Controller S was originally designed exclusively for the Xbox's Japanese release, but was released in America several weeks after the Japan launch. The smaller, more comfortable pad now actually outsells the original controller hands down in NPD's accessory ranking list.

Production of the so-called "Controller XXL" has already ceased, and the only way you can get your hands on a new one now is in a non-bundled Xbox system. (Don't forget the DVD kit refund offer, either.) Microsoft said that they will decide whether to dump the original controller forever sometime after Christmas.

So which package to buy? A tough choice, admittedly, but your hands will thank you immensely if you opt for the Controller S bundle. Trust us; we know.

Yep.

I also wanted to get another five, but I couldn't lift them and bring them home, so I had to use my buddy's truck.

Since we're on this talk about controller, I go this one question.

The Controller S, which one has the XBOX logo just like the one in the system (green circle with silver font)? Is it the Japanese version? All I see in eBay is the US version that has that stupid glass with black XBOX logo underneath it.

And if it is the JPN version, where can I buy that thing and is it compatible with a PAL XBOX?

Yes, its the Japanese version that has the Green jewel with the silver font Ray. Also, the buttons are slightly different where instead of them being smooth and round they have imprints of the face letter just like the DC's buttons. You can still get the controllers online from places like NCSX but ever since the American versions came out the controllers are harder to find sometimes. Finally, I really don't know if they work with a PAL system but I seriously doubt it wouldn't.

Although I don't own an X-Box yet, do you guys think the original controller will become rare since their "phasing" it out? Also, I have big hands so would I find the original more comfortable?

Yes, if you have big hands, go for the XXL controller. About it being 'rare', I dun think so.

Thank god for small favors. The original Xbox controller was the worst ever IMO, even worse than the N64 controller.

Stuff like this makes me inch closer and closer to breaking down and buying the Chex Box.

My hands are too big for the controller S. That's why I love the XXL better. Most of the time when I play with others they run straight to the Controller S. But FPS seems perfect with XXL. I tried play Halo with the s version and didn't like it.

Of all the 3 current consoles - the Xbox XXL pad is by far the most awquard to use.
I'll be glad to pick up the smaller controller and wave goodbye to eternal hand-cramp and sloppy button layout (although some think that the smaller controller is just as bad)

Damn it Microsoft!!! I finally find a controller that fits my hands perfectly, and then phase it out??!?! So the new target audience of the xbox is kids and dwarves huh? Oh well, better stock up on the old style.

my only problem with the big controler is that i have big thumbs, and the buttons are too small and close together. so i end up hitting two at the same time when trying to play.

I'm glad. I hate my fat controller that came with the system, and the only time it gets used is when we play more than two people on my Xbox, which has only been twice.

For those of you here that own the S controller, especially the JPN version, and doesn't like it, let me know. I'm interested in getting one.

I dunno man, I have really big hands, and although I miss the larger triggers of the XXL controller, the button layout and D-pad on the S-pad is soooooooooo much better. My Halo game improved do to the fact that I could manage the melee and reload functions better with the S.

To each his own. This controller does pretty much belong in the dustbin of history though, along with that absolutely shitty US first-gen Saturn pad and every 3DO pad ever made (CPS Soldier aside).

Well I was never thrilled with the large XBox controller . . . mainly because I bought a MadCatz Contro Pad Pro when it came out:

<a href="http://www.madcatz.com/MadCatz/product_details.jsp?product_id=4526" target="_blank">http://www.madcatz.com/MadCatz/product_details.jsp?product_id=4526</a>

Basically the same size as the large Microsoft controller, but SLIGHTLY slimmer in the grips and MUCH more comfortable to hold. The MadCatz has rubber grips and overall is more comfortable to me than the large XB controller. And they have a micro version out now:

<a href="http://www.madcatz.com/MadCatz/product_details.jsp?product_id=4536" target="_blank">http://www.madcatz.com/MadCatz/product_details.jsp?product_id=4536</a>

Which I also got, and like as well. IMO the MadCatz XB controllers are great quality, better than the MS originals in every way. :)

BTW they also are coming out with a wireless big controller soon (EBGames has it coming out 10/23 @ $59.99, ouch!):
