with hours and hours more extra goodies.

90% of DVDs aren't like that... They just did that because they know a lot of Kevin Smith fans would be willing to shell out the money for the newer better DVD. Like I always say, Kevin Smith fans are like anime fans... Why else would they charge so much for the movies?
Besides the Kevin Smith movies, the only movies I know of that were re-released with better DVDs are any of the Ultimate Edition movies... and Boogie Nights... And Seven. That's about all I can think of. I'm sure I'm missing some, but it's still really not even 10% of DVDs, so it's not something you have to worry about. You could also find out what is on the newer DVD and see if it has stuff that interests you. If it does, you could sell your old DVD on Half.com and pick up the new one...
Peter Jackson always has tons of extra stuff filmed... I heard he had like 20 hours of documentary footage filmed on the making of Braindead... In the past it probably hasn't been really important stuff, but this time it does sound relatively important...
The movie is still worth seeing, I really enjoyed it... I think you should go see it, Blaine. It felt really long as it is, I couldn't really imagine it a half an hour longer... No, I have not read the book (I have read The Hobbit!) and I'm sure if I had I might feel differently... It is possible though that being more faithful to the book might not be the best way of watching the movie... It could slow down the pace of the movie. Chances are they had good reason to take it out, but if not that's another reason why I'm glad DVDs exist...
