While Dario Argento was/is quite skilled at crafting some very striking cinematography, the story itself was very weak. As soon as the (rather generic) premise was made clear, I knew exactly how the film would end. The writing was nothing particularly impressive (character development is your friend), and the acting didn't do much for me, either.
Having been told for so many years that Suspiria is one of the defining horror films out there, I was more than a tad disappointed. Any Argento fans out there who can recommend any of his other films that are more worth the time?

OK, here's the deal with Suspiria-
Yeah the story is weak, and it doen't even make that much sense, BUT it doesn't have to-because the movie is basically a vivid nightmare put to film.
Hear me out on this-
First off, the colors. Argento bought a bunch of old 1950's technicolor stock to shoot Suspiria on- that's why the film has such garish reds and greens. Nightmarish, hallucinatory colors.
The music is gleefully over the top, with Goblin's pulsing soundtrack trying to freak you out at every turn (My girlfriend can't even listen to the MP3's).
The whole film is basically a surreal nightmare, really, it's all style and very little substance, but in the end, that's what makes Suspiria what it is.
A vivid, surreal nightmare filled with gloriously realised and sustained set pieces.
As far as Argento's other films:
Deep Red
Tenebre (If you like Deep Red)
Opera
Sleepless (Only if you like slasher films though)
