I just can't play either DooM or DooM II: Hell on Earth these days. Can you?

Back in 1993 DooM on the PC was the absolute shit. I was blown outta my mind that a game could be as scary, engrossing and "realistic" (as in making you feel like you are there so to speak) as DooM made me felt.

When I made it to the last level of the first episode (the infamous battle with the two Baron of Hell's) I couldn't fathom how awesome the whole deal was.

I guess DooM was something you HAD to experience back in the early/mid 90s... otherwise you'll never be able to understand it like it should be. Cuz I see a lot of young kids say, "Man I just played DooM for the first time and I don't see the hype -- it SUX!!" To which I think:

For its time DooM KICKED ASS, plain and simple.

Nowadays? I can barely play it for 10 minutes without shutting it down and then thinking back to the old days when it kicked so much ass.

How well (or lack thereof) do you think DooM has aged?

I still love Doom. There are things about Doom that are just sadly absent from modern FPS games. Getting mobbed and chased by hoardes of baddies was great. In what other modern games will you have monsters who chase you through the whole level? If anyone finds Doom boring now, stick it on the hardest mode. You'll walk into a room and literally 20 guys will be there waiting to kill you. Run away and they follow you. If it's the beginning of the level, you might not have a safe place to run. Remember having an entire level of monsters on your heels and you try to find a safe place to start taking them out from? THAT is the beauty of Doom. That's the same reason that I liked Diablo so much. The gameplay seems so shallow when you break it down, but the fact that there could be 500 guys on the screen chasing you made it a load of fun and helped make it a better game. You had to think fast to get out of a jam and position yourself intelligently. You had to monitor the pack of monsters to make sure there was no super powerful sub boss in there. Great stuff.

I know it definitely plays terribly on the Gameboy Advance. Someone put that port out of its misery.

There are a lot of games from years back that I stopped playing because otherwise the "magic" will be gone. I tried a few games after years to see if I could finally finish them but when I played them I got so disappointed that all my happy memories where instantly destroyed and I wondered what I was thinking playing them all those years. One of the games that lost it for me was commander Keen, I played all episodes for hours on end but when I played it about a year ago it sucked so bad I almost cried.....

I`m just afraid to start up doom on that count

The gameplay didn't age that much, but the graphics did (horribly).

This is one of the reasons why I don't like nowaday's 3d games.. They heavily depend on the graphics, the gameplay always comes second or third.
After a year the graphics are outdated, all that's left is gameplay that wasn't that good anyway, so there you go. A hollow boring empty game..

Well, the other day I installed the xbox version in my xbox and I STILL liked it. That game is just fun, and I like the fact that you don't need to aim (no up/down movement), so it is much playable. The graphics didn't look THAT bad after all, thanks to the fact they don't use polygons, now those graphics rae the ones that age worse. For example I couldn't stand more than 5 minutes the Panzer Dragoon 1 xbox version.

Hmmm,i could stil play Doom today quite easy.Sure the Graphics have aged badly but like dmhawkmoon said, crack the difficultly and it's a hell of alot of fun and some of the levels are quite a challenge. And blasting the fuck out of like 20 baddies at a time ruled. There are some games that i can't play today, but if the gameplay was that good i could play in like 30 years time, too me doom was one off them.

Did you ever try the Doom Master levels, thier quite good.

Me too!! If I had time I'd finish making my 32 Level Episode!

It was a VERY VERY cool game, and I love playing it just as much today.

You can never mistake the online "beep" that happens when you get a message from a multiplayer friend....etc.

I just wish Dwango or a decent Doom network still existed. I have no one to play easily :(

Doom/Doom2/Final Doom Is still rockin today!

Steve, I agree with you.

I used to play Doom/Doom 2 a lot back in the old days and now they both look corny.

They are good in the old days but just can't stand for the time.

Agreed.

It's true the graphics aren't cutting edge anymore, but for 10 years difference what do you expect? I played through it again about 2 months ago and I think it's STILL a damn good game. Good challenge, good design all around.

I'm still confused as to why some of you think the game has 'aged horribly.' Quite frankly if you think Doom looks ugly and corny and boring then why in the world are you at a Neo Geo forum? A lot of my friends would say exactly the same things about Neo Geo games today.

I'm guessing the real answer is that most of you that don't like it today never finished the game on the hardest setting. angry

Why don't you try J Doom. Its a updated doom enging that will allow you to play in full 3d (polygons) Character, guns, and levels. Really nice lighting effects as well.
I did a search for it but could not find it if your interested I will look for it when I get home and could send you the link if you would just PM and let me know.

DOOM kicks as much ass today as it did back then. If you can't see that, then you probably weren't around back then.

Doom 3 now looks to finnally restore the glory of that prestigious old warhorse.

PS. Atrophyed, it was on PC first. All the inferior ports were on those inferior systems like the SNES, 32X, Jaguar, PSX...

OMFG that kicks ass. Just downloaded it and played for about 30 min.

I don't think this game as aged badly at all. I was always more of a Duke Nukem fan though. We always had a game running on our school network, but soon Diablo replaced that :D I wonder if Duke is available for download.. hmmm..

Big time, I used to play that game to the GROUND. Had friends who owned it on PSX, N64, 32X, Atari Jaguar, 3DO, and Sega Saturn! Co-op and Deathmatch like crazy. I still have Final DOOM, Ultimate DOOM, and DOOM 2. I still can pick them up and play them without saying "god this is so old" I think it's still carries a fast paced action feel. Especially in Level 12 of "Plutonia Experiment" on Final DOOM. Remember all those lovely Arch-Viles walking all over the halls in that long maze? One I always wanted to play was DOOM 2: Master Levels. No matter how many variations of DOOM that came out, I still loved them all.
Signs of age? You bet! Still fun to play? Hell yes

GBA verison was a sad port of the Atari Jaguar verison. should have been renamed SLUG: SLOW ON EARTH!

Don't forget IDKFA for you cheaters wink

I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing Doom or Doom 2. Yes, some of the ports have been utter crap, but those are ports. PC Doom remains as strong as ever.

Doom's gameplay still holds up to this day and I still dig the graphics (though that may be more nostaliga than anything else). Jack up the difficulty and hang on for dear life baby!!

Its time for me to install Doom and have another run!! IDSPISPOPD don't fail me now!!

Just loaded up Doom 95 right now and played a little of Doom 2. Brings back all the memories, and no I don't think the game has aged horribly. So what the graphics are not "cutting edge". It was the most revolutionary game of all time as far as FPS games go. Even looking at it from how it stands as a game today, the gameplay is awesome. Then again being in love with 2D graphics makes a difference in your enjoyability. If you fall for the graphics hype of todays game world, then it's going to be hard for you to enjoy this as much. But for me loading it up was like playing it back on that glorious June day in 1994. :) buttrock

Doom? Aged badly? Hell no! Of course it's not going to be as great of an experience as when you played it way back when, but I don't think game itself has aged badly at all. If it's a matter of some kid saying 'd00d these grafixx suckkkk' then tell them to pick up jDoom. It really makes the game look pretty damn nice. Of course it's not quite the same experience as the original Doom (DOS, none of this doom95 nonsense), but it's a nice new way to experience it. (edit: and all you need is the main wad files, so those of you downloading the doom95 thing can play this)

Thinking back to when Doom (more over Doom 2) was in it's prime always brings back some great memories.

I used to rack up pretty big phone bills playing deathmatch long distance. This was the day when you usually talked to your opponent on the phone breifly (to config the dialer, argue over who was going to be indigo (due to the slight lag in case I'm the only one who remembers this), etc etc) and then played. I doubt anyone who wasn't around during that time and has only played Counter Strike (or something similar) can even imagine that. There were even pages that you could have your number listed on and people could call and see if you're up for a match. Also, I wasn't one of them (despite the best efforts by me and a few friends), some people were lucky enough to have a local BBS they could dial in to for 3-4 player games. Or better yet some lived in one of the cities with a Dwango server. But point is it was a time when you didn't just join Random Server B with Average Idiot 2 and Smack Talking Joe and The Guy Who Really Fucking Sucks and 20 other random people. You actually felt like part of a 'community' so to speak.

Then there was the developement side of it all. Everyone and their mom's dog was making SOMETHING for Doom/Doom 2, tons of original ideas floating around. Something that seems to be lost these days. For the most part, all I see these days is the same old crap. I wont even rant on that. :)

Enough nostalgia though.

So of course you don't get stuff like tons of people wanting to deathmatch, people sending around awesome DM demos, people making tons of maps and mods, and all that stuff any more.. This is 2003, other games are on the forefront of all that. For anyone that was around in Doom/Doom 2's prime it's always going to be better in memory, no doubt about it. Just don't go back and play Doom expecting it to floor you like it did back then. Though not as revolutionary now as it was then, it's still a great single player/deathmatch experience. (if you can find someone to deathmatch with that is)

PS- I've been playing jHeretic the last few days, this game is also still as good as it was back then. IMO, Heretic was/is one of the very few pre-Quake games to sit up there with Doom.

I thought it was Z doom, not j doom?
