You mean horizontal. ;)

Out of those two, I say R-Type series. R-Type 1 and 2 are just total sweetness, and R-Type Delta is a great modern sequal that totally kicks ass. Also if we count Pulstar as an R-Type game, which I do, Thunderforce stands no chance, imo. I could never really get into the Thunderforce games all that much. They're good though.

However I say G-Darius single-handedly destroys them all.

R-Type, definately. Even though I prefer vertical shooters (Truxton, Raiden, Shienryu, Battle Garegga, etc.), I used to spend a fortune on R-Type when it came out in the arcade.

i'd take gradius over all of those any day. gradius had, the enemies, the powerups, and the difficulty. that r-type and thunderforce couldn't touch.

R-Type vs Thunder Force?

Tough one to call in my book. Too many aspects of both games & their series that I like. They're both personal favorites of mine, I don't think I could pick one over the other.

Now, If you said Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy vs. Thunder Force... Then it would be an easier decision. <img src="graemlins/makeface.gif" border="0" alt="[Make Face]" />

This is hard!
But....
I'm obsessed with thunderforce 5. But, Rtype 1 is also one of my all time favorites. The music and graphics are so damn nostalgic, the first time I saw the first boss of Rtype I was shocked (that was on my sega master system), But overall I played TF5 a lot more than any rtype, I think I'll have to go with thunder force.

I give mad props to Ducky, G-Darius is the best shooter ever made!!!!!!!

Thunder Force IV is the best horizontal shooter in my opinion. The music rocks too.

OMG! Trevor McFur is sooo bad!

You know, if someone asked me which console most failed to live up to its potential, I would have to say the Jaguar. I mean, I had maybe three or four games I enjoyed playing: A vs. P, Tempest 2000, and Iron Soldier spring to mind. I could never get 'into' Cybermorph, but I know it got great reviews. Anyways, back to your regularly scheduled topic...

Owwwwwwwwww...fuck this topic tears at the threads my soul is woven from. I LOVE the TF series....TF3 was the second import I ever bought. R-Type is still such an avowed classic though. I'd have to say that with the full understanding that both are precious gems that belong in a museum, ThunderForce wins out as my personal favorite. Great playability, with such a sweet arsenal of weapons, killer bosses, and incredible music that defied anyone to carp about the MegaDrive's supposed shitty sound chip.

I prefer the Salamander/Gradius Series. I also really like Eliminate Down and Steel Empire for the Mega Drive.

Between R-Type and Thunderforce, it is R-Type hands down: fantastic control and superb music and graphics for its day.

I'd have to agree. I mean I love R-Type, but there was just something about Gradius that did it for me. I picked up Gradius 3&4 for the PS2. Wow, brings back that old school twitch gameplay. Hard as heck but also keeps ya coming back for more.

I also really loved good old Lifeforce for the NES. One of the first actual 2-player shooters I got to play, and still very tight to this day.

I like the Thunderforce series (only the horizontal portions and not that crappy overhead sequence that we saw in Thunderforce II on Genesis for the first portion of each stage).

Why? Because it's relatively 100% action. There are some areas where you need to remember a pattern to get through (like the high speed scrolling part in TF2 where you had to pick the right tunnel), but the later installments focused mainly on blasting away.

R-TYPE, while a great game series in its own right and one that I enjoy very much, seems to focus too much on strategy and EXACT memorization of where to be at this particular part of the stage, which inevitably leads to a lot of dying and replaying before it finally "clicks", much like many of the shooters and platformers of its era. Games weren't terribly long or advanced back in the 1980's, so developers would squeeze out some extra replay incentive by making their games harder, which turned off many casual gamers.

Definitely R-Type for me

R-Type 1, Delta and Pulstar are all some of my absolute favorites. I can still remember seeing R-Type for the first time when I was a kid in the Disneyland Starcade.

And yeah, G-Darius is awesome (But not better than Pulstar! :) )
