Metal Gear: Snake Eater Set in Past???

It might be old news, but the latest copy of PLAY magazine had a smallish cover on the new Metal Gear Game... and supposedly it takes place circa late 1950's - early 1960's... which makes no sense since in the picture we see Snake carrying an M-16A2 assault rifle underneath a bridge... and the only model at that time (late 50's) would've been Eugene Stoner's original AR-10 version still in prototype stages, prior to Mattel (yeah the toy company) picking up the "production" of the AR-15s redubbed the M-16 for the D.O.D. in early Vietnam 1960's era replacing the superior Garand style M-14 battle rifle.

I'm thinking they got a typo, as I have yet to see any demos or even the preview of this game... but along this article it was asking the questions of Kojima (or one of his assistants) about if whether or not this was the same Snake we know or if it's actually "Big Boss" before the whole "Terrible Infants" Cloning thing from his DNA when he was making a name for himself. The offical sources didn't say much on that, so I'm just wondering WTF?

Anyone got some info on this? Cause I'm confused now!

I have heard something like that.Kojima is very secretive about the story.I wonder how the final product will be like.Maybe it might be different. We were all led to believe that snake was the only main character you could control for the entire game(MGS2: SOL) but it turned out to be very different, lol. :D :D :D

my advice to all MGS fans: stop reading articles, interviews, watching movies ..... etc.

I think what we've seen so far (pics + 2 trailers) was enough and anything more would make the good parts of the game suck.

just imagine how better MGS2 would seem if you didn't read about all the abilities and new stuff in the game before you played it (or if you didn't play the ZOE demo).

it may just be me but I think it would be a lot better if I didn't look at anything untill I actually play the game ...... even reading about the story.

I believe the story revolves around a journey that BigBoss made during his past (around the 50's) and Snake tries to follow that same path now in order to reveal some conspiracy! Supposedly during this mission, BigBoss Discovered the Patriots and in some way got entangled with them. The Patriots where probably the main reason why Liquid and Snake where created in the first place.

Just a reminder, I could be way off!

The character in the trailer is big boss.
Look, he's got one eye.

Why does he look like snake?

Where did snake get his DNA from...

Yeah, its most noticable when they show the close-up of Snake/Big Boss(?) firing the machine gun, surrounded by fire. At the last second he gasps, and you can see that his right eye is definitely missing.

Meanwhile I think it was already safe to assume this game took place before MGS (or even Metal Gear?) with all the year references being in the 1960s, and the E3 promo stuff chronicling the major events of the decade as part of its design.

In one of the interviews Kojima admitted to the game being set in the past, so its pretty obvious thats Big Boss.

Big Boss: "Snake! I am your father!!!!!!!! Together we can rule the Cold War!"

Snake: "Noooooooooooooooo!!!! This game truly has gone to hell with incessant plot twists!"

Thanks for the replies to everyone who did. I haven't seen much on MGS 3: Snake Eater, so I didn't know about BIG BOSS or any of this going to be in the past... but again unless like what "Solid Snake" here posted about a back and forth time setting between Snake AND Big Boss... then there should be no way in hell that Big Boss would be Carrying an M-16A2 Variation of that .223/5.56mm Assault Rifle in the year 1958-early 1960's. Again, if this was around the time of the Cuban Revolution, the man would go into combat with Stoner's odd cyndriclical looking AR-10 Prototype and if in the early 60's then it be the M-16A1 that caused so many troops problems during the early years of Vietnam for Americans.

One of the things I've always loved about the Metal Gear games is the attention to detail Kojima and company puts into the game, especially weapons. But if this game clearly is in the past then the ported A2 model, with M208 G. Launcher Sling area (flat side --- which came out in 1982) as seen in the picture in PLAY Magazine is either wrong, or Kojima's getting lazy. During the late 1950's at best soldiers would have any number of Soviet Block Kalishnikov AKs, the Boxed 20-Round M-14... the M3 Grease Gun... heck even the good ole' 8-Round En Bloc internal clip M-1 Garand. The M-16 later revolutionized even the Ruskies over to the 5.56mm (.223) round {which I hate, but then I was raised on 30-06 Garands, .50 Calibers etc.) but there's no way an A2 variant of the M-16 would be available in the late 50's-early 60's.

I'll give the game a play when it's out, but Sons of Liberty kind of burnt me out with even really caring. I just heard that there was a new MG game, heard it was in the past... then saw (again from a single picture) that unless in modern times, that weapon just wasn't around back then. It be like me making a movie about Teddy Rosevelt & the Rough Riders, and out of all the Spring Field bolt action rifles and lever action reapeaters you see this ONE GUY carrying a 1999 Russian AN-94 assault rifle. JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN!
