1st-Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
2nd-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
3rd-Castlevania II: Simon's Quest

I just got Castlevania: HoD today and have been playing it. I couldn't get into Circle of the Moon like I wanted to 'cuz the game was too darn dark and the magnifier/light I bought didn't help matters any. Overall I'm liking how it's really close to SoTN in terms of gameplay plus borrows the multi-directional whip from Castlevania IV. The main character seems a bit odd though, doesn't strike me as a Belmont but more like Alucard with a whip :p .

The game came out on the PC Engine first on Super CD and a few years later they ported it to the Super Famicom/SNES.

That's hard to say, either Castlevania 1, because it's so simple/clean, it's what you think when someone says Castlevania, or Symphony of the night because of all that is packed in to that game.

Super Castlevania has perhaps the best music, it's so different than the rest, dark and moody.

Castlevania SOTN. Has one of the best soundtracks for a videogame. Plus I really love the Metroid style gameplay of this and the two GBA games.

As much as I love White Knight Concerto for GBA I like the first one better (Circle of the Moon). White Night took me 9:59 to beat the game with 199.8 finish rate, yet it took me 18: 48 minutes to finish COTM and only have 185.5 finish rate. I really love the challenge that COTM has. White Night really is to easy. Hopefully they will change that in the US version.

Definatly Dracula X (PCEngine).

-remixed CD soundtracks
-revisited stages
-"non-linear" game play [well, ability to play past stages]
-alternative stages (2, 2', 3, 3', 4, 4', 5, 5')
-rescue damsels in distress (alternative endings)
-alternative character (once rescued). Playing with this character alters the items, cinematic sequences and endings.

(The SNES "port" was more like a "remix", quite good, but different and doesn't have everything of the PCEngine's version.)

The SF port was called Dracula XX in Japan, and Castlevania V: Vampire's Kiss in Europe, I believe.

My favorite one, though, would have to be SotN, closely followed by Concerto of Midnight Sun (Harmony of Dissonance).

Symphony Of The Night is not only the best Castlevania title, but also one of the best games of ALL time. My best of list looks like:

1. Symphony of the Night (PS)
2. Dracula X: Chi No Rondo (PCE-SCD)
3. Super Castlevania 4 (SNES)

Of course, this all must be read under the premise that there are no stinkers in this series....and of course, this discounts the existence of the two N64 outings. <img src="graemlins/mrt2.gif" border="0" alt="[Mr T]" />

Symphony of the Night is indeed the best, in my opinion.

It's hard to choose one other than that though. I remember staying up late at night when I was a kid with Simon's Quest. Shit, then there's Dracula X and Castlevania 4.. A man could go crazy thinking about this shit

I'm with the majority here. Symphony of the Night. That game absolutely blew me away and it still does.

The best game in the Castlevania line is part 3; Dracula's Curse.

It's a cut above the rest.

As much as I love both GBA Castlevania games, the best IMO is the import Saturn version of Symphony of the Night (think it was titled Nocturne in the Moonlight). It had all of the stuff from the PSX version with several added areas and Maria was playable. One of my Top 5 all-time favorite games.
