I'm thinking about jumping into the Saturn market.

Are the shooters all they are made out to be?

What do I need to get started?

What games should I start off with?

Tonk-

Like i said in another post, dont get RS right away. The saturn is awesome though for shooters. Some of the best on the system are as follows:

Gradius Deluxe Pack
Salamander Deluxe Pack
DoDonpachi
Blast Wind [kind of hard to find]
Battle Garrega

There's also the parodius games, Layer Section, etc. But if you want a real look at the what the saturn has to offer in terms of shmups, go to www.shmups.com and check out the reviews and pics.

peace,
ray

Depends on who you have heard talking. Some people *can* and *have* OVER-hyped the shooters. But I would say yes, they are pretty damn good.

What you need to get started are:

a nifty wallet,
a watchful eye,
a talent for scouting,
a lot of patience and sanity. :) ;)

I think the Saturn and SNES is the best system for shootemups. All them games they said are great. Get a STkey if your getting a USA system. Also get Panzer Dragoon Saga and the god of all shootemups Silvergun :)

Man when I first saw this topic I saw it when it was cut off. It looked like "Im thinking of jumping"

Meaning something suicidal to that extent. Phew ya know?

Get the fighters that were listed above. The usual Capcom suspects. The Capcom Generations series is a good thing to pick up while you're at it. There are a lot of shooters, I really off hand can't really remember a lot of them. But someone here probably could list a bunch of them. Fire Pro Wrestling 6 Man Scramble is worth getting as well. Avoid the SNK ports for the most part since I know you have a Phantom 1, just stick to the MVS carts. Nothing worth finding in the way of SNK on Saturn. The KOF games are decent at best. Samurai Spirits isn't too bad. Slug 1 is the only worthwhile title to get if you don't already have the MVS. Just scour the listings on Ebay and you're bound to see some eye catching titles. Tons of great stuff to be gotten for the Saturn.

Don't forget to grab Virtua Fighter 2 (if you want to keep it simple) and Fighters Megamix (which is essentially a fusion of Virtual Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers; lots of fun if you can look past the ugly graphics). Both those games go for fairly cheap.

Another fun title is College Slam. Seriously... it's one of those sports games that doesn't play by the rules. It's kinda like NBA jam, except there are powerups during gameplay (whirlwind attack and whatnot), and you can do 9 point shots and stuff. It's a fun party title - nothing you'd really want to play by yourself though. You can pick this up dirt cheap too (under 5$ - shipped). It's a good 2nd banana title for any game library.

I say skip College Slam and go for NBA Jam TE, which also has (optional) 9 point special shots and whirlwind tactics... plus an NBA license!

I find Radiant Silvergun one of the few expensive collectible games that DOES live up to the hype. Then again, when I originally played it, I didn't have any overhyped expectations about it, I just picked it up at Software Etc. for $60. I've since paid more to get it back, but I'm damn glad it's back in my collection (the game fucking rocks in RGB). To me, Radiant is a perfect piece of testimony to the vast, untapped sea of power that was the Saturn. It blends massive 2D line scrolls and wicked-looking 3D bosses into a seamless package. It does an endless array of insane hardware tricks you wouldn't think the Saturn is capable of. RS also sports an amazing difficulty curve, when you first play it, you feel like you got spanked because of the massive odds you find yourself against, but eventually, you find yourself dodging insane amounts of enemy fire, doing your best to hang with the insane bosses trying to get 100% Destruction Bonuses on each one. The soundtrack to RS is also an amazing orchestral affair that soars and recedes perfectly to match the orgy of battle onscreen.

Trust me Cap, even at $150, this is a shooter you WILL play over and over again. Most of my friends are fighting game nuts who shun the shooter genre but found themselves helpless in the face of RS's supreme presence. It easily owns any of the shooters in the Neo catalog.

The Saturn has a lot of sweet import stuff. I wish I could afford more games for it. But, since importers charge 50-60 dollars for Saturn games that are 12-15 dollars brand new in Japan, I'm gonna have to wait before I really start raking em in.

I'd go for Nights, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragon 1&2&saga, Waku Waku 7, and Phsychic Warlock Tamaru(think I spelled that right

Saturn = one of my all time fave systems.

Good games to start:

-Guardian Heroes
-Dragon Force
-NiGHTS
-Sonic Jam (or wait for Sonic collection on GC)
-Galactic Attack (one of my fave shooters of all time, released in the US and can had be had for cheap!)
-Panzer Dragoon series
-Street Fighter Collection
-Legend of Oasis
-Darius Gaiden (another cheap US released shooter, can be had for a nice price)

These are just some of the domestically released stuff which would be a great place to start.

Saturn has a ton of amazing imports also, which some of the posters above me have listed.

System, 2nd controller, Action Replay 4-in-1(also known as 5-in-1), + games(want ever floats your boat...shooter, fighting, etc)...

The only games I have are:

Radiant Silvergun
Dragon Force
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
Shining Force III

...I've played/owned a descent portion of Saturn stuff, but in the end these are the only ones I've kept...I'm a gamer, not a collector...

...give the Saturn a go Mike...it's a quality system with tasty games...

Hell, if you've got the cash, dive in head first. The Saturn is a great system, all the Capcom ports are top notch. I'm gonna say X-Men vs. Street Fighter is arcade perfect with that 4MB RAM card. I spent so many quarters on that game I felt the need to get that game as soon as it was released.
