Yeah I know, I'm late again.
Funny eh, all the euphoric Ikaruga posts are gone. Seems that some ppl would be a lil' dissapointed about the game?!
Well, not me.
I think the game concept with the black and white shots works very well. Bullets are your friends if you choose your color wisely, and navigating through huge flocks of projectiles is big fun, as is switching between black and white quickly to get maximum impact (enemies are more vulnerable to attacks with the opposite color).
Graphics are awesome. Explosions cause slowdowns (at least the boss explosions), but other than that, the game is pure digital silk. And the music fits the game very very nicely, epic tracks and cool sound f/x, what more could you want.
Difficulty is okay, learning curve is not bad. I was able to clear the first two levels without dying after two hours on normal, except for the boss in lvl2, where I start loosing lifes.
There are some extras in it as well, like some hidden features (I won't spoil it for you, send a PM if you want to know more). It either depends on completing levels or on play time (which is displayed in the backup menu). Kinda like KoF99 DC, 'nuff said.
On the GD ROM there are a couple of Ikaruga wallpapers in BMP format, which is also a nice idea. Two of them have been put on Treasure's web site, the others are new (at least to me).
My buddies who played Ikaruga with me say that they'd miss power-ups; the homing laser isn't enough for them, and I can relate to that in some way. The laser doesn't exactly look powerful, tho it's useful to attack enemies behind your back.
Overall, I'd say that Ikaruga is an innovative, great playing and looking Treasure gem.
What do you think?
