One thing I've noticed is that the game is sped up significantly more than the original Ureal Tournemant. In fact I'd say the game plays more like Quake 3: TA than anything else. I mean it's probably faster than Quake 3, which is just astounding to me since UT was dedicatedly slower in terms of gameplay (not by much, but it was there).
But not just the speed, but the way the weapons work, the feel and sounds of the game, it all feels more like a id production more than anything else I can put my finger on. I mean the character models are plenty darker than the original UT, and the way the weapons are setup it feels more like Quake 3.
Basically by that I mean the Rocket Launcher in particular. In Quake 3, you had to be pretty precise with the rockets, you couldn't (like in Quake 1 and 2, and especially in Unreal Tournament) fire at the ground or the wall behind a player and expect it to give as much damage. The damage drop off radius was pretty tight in Q3 meaning you had to score a direct hit to incur a "gib"
. With UT it was much more of a "shoot the floor" aspect with the rockets, especially when you could load up 6 of em to fire at once. At least in UT2k3 you can only fire a max of 3 rockets. And the minigun has been toned way down as well. It has windup time, it's louder (you can hear the windup and know it's coming), and even with the "spread" fire (primary fire this time) you still have to be pretty damn accurate. Plus with the "accurate fire" it's really really accurate, meaning if you can keep the fire on someone, then they're really fucked.
Plus my favorite weapon by far, the Flak Cannon, has been "accurized". The flak now flies in a more "straight" direction untill it richotches, meaning that it's even more deadly with better accuracy. Which is very nice for how I like to play!
Anyway, I just figured I'd throw these out there, wondering if I'm really crazy for thinking the new UT feels more like Quake than it does the old UT.
Peace
