Giving away ROMs hurts a company just as much as selling them does.

I just think it is funny when people (not specifically you) rant about how emulation put SNK out of business and pirates ruined the Dreamcast, but they have no problem using a downloaded program they did not pay for while listening to MP3s from CDs they don't own and watching porn clips from movie they did not buy.

Don't get me wrong, my problem is the hypocracy, not the act itself. It would be mighty drafty and wet in my glass house if I went down that path.

yea, your right.
I dont support the selling of ROMs, and such, and i only use roms to make spirit rips and testing out a game before i buy it.
But, im 15, i dont have, nor would i pay $500 for this, sorry.
Cuz i like to make wierd art and stuff, and someone pointed out that photoshop is a good program to have to make wierd stuff.

I understand. Photoshop is very cool. I own a copy for Mac, and I "got" a copy for PC. In my case, I feel like I paid for the program, I should be able to use it on both platforms. I'm sure Adobe has issues with that, but in my mind I'm justified. Even at 34, $500 is alot of money for a program.

Photoshop is a professional photo editing package.
I have been using it at work for about 6 years now and probably know about 3% of what it can do. This is a masiively complicated program and i suggest you buy a beginners manual just to get the basics on it. The amount of people i know who have copied adobe software, it's a wonder adobe aren't out of business!!

It's only companies who buy the original packages i think!!

The Student version is half that.

It's exactly the same except it's for students to use.

You could buy the bundle and get Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and PageDesigner for $400 total.

No doubt. I have worked with Photoshop since version 2.51 and it has gotten huge since then. Layers alone is a godsend.

I work for a company that sells to printing companies, and I can tell you that software piracy is rampant even at the company level. You look at a pre-press shop that has to have Quark, Pagemaker, InDesign, Illustrator, Freehand, Photoshop, etc. for each workstation to be legal. That's a huge investment.

I really believe that there is a big difference in "borrowing" a program to play around with like mookystains does and using it to generate work that you get paid for. I had copies of programs at home so I could practice with them for work (back when I was in production) but when my wife started getting into digital photography for her studio we bought a full version of Photoshop. Just because she would be generating income with it.

If you can swing it, take a class in Photoshop, it is way deep, but probably one of the best video games I own.

I had to take 3 PhotoShop courses as part of my degree. I learned nothing. Everything I know is self-taught or learned via tutorials from places like phong.com, deviantart.org and wastedyouth.org.

I was even offered a teaching job from the skills I learned from free sources...Ironic I feel.

Alot of it depends on the teacher. I took my first class back with 2.51 and I learned alot, but my teacher was a serious photoshop freak who now owns his own teaching centers Ledet.com This was back when Calculations were the most powerful tool in the program (besides the rubber stamp tool)

I used PS in work up through 3 and then got away from production. When my wife needed to learn it (ever tried teaching your wife to use a computer?) we went back to the same place and took a 6.0 class that was just as good.

I think the difference is that in the class you basically learn where the tools are and what they do. On your own you learn how to apply them and all the cool things they do that the manufacturer probably never meant for them to do.

Indeed. That's pretty much what tutorials teach you. In all of my tutorials I stress that the purpose of the tutorial is NOT to learn how to make glass letters or whatever but to learn a new technique that you can apply in other new ways. To learn something than extrapolate that into something new. Then, take that something new, create a tutorial for it to teach someone else, ad infinitum.

I don't know if the teaching of the class was at fault, I know several people who knew NO Photoshop when we started school and now have jobs where they do little else but Photoshop.

I just think we were going over things I already knew. Like recently I just started to try the Extract function. If I had this in class, I would have indeed learned something new.

I'm an avid fan of self-teaching.

PhotoShop is a tool. Nothing more than a pencil. You can be taught to think like an artist, which will enhance your skills greatly. But if your goal is just to learn the app...then you have no need for schooling. If you want to be an artist, I really would reccomend going..as well as learning OTHER tools. .

I don't get it. As I'm a 3D artist I get to talk to alot of other proffesional 3D guys and 90% of them started out on pirated versions of their app of choice (be it 3DS, LW or A/FW-Maya). Now all of them have bought the software. I mean, a normal user isn't going to make money off the app in general. Heck, even I started off on a pirated Lightwave 3D 5.0.
What I'm saying is atleast music and gfx apps I think should be free until you make money off it. As in 3Dartists becoming professionals. It helps to build up a huge user pool who later on become customers.
Anyone seen Inspire3D which is basically a light version (not crippled) of LW, it boosted LW's user pool by a LOT, that was a step in the right direction.
This will of course never happen but I think I make sense here. Right?
