This is just something I have to ask around. I hear that such and such a controller sucks, and this other one is good. And I just don't tend to agree.

Here goes:
Panasonic 3D0 controllers.
Good buttons:
- good size
- enough buttons for quite a few games (okay, so it doesn't have 4 or 6 face buttons, but not many games used them all.)
- long cord
- headphone plug w/volume control
- controller port built in (no need for multitaps, just get 8 controllers and you can play 8 player Fifa! :p )

Dreamcast Controllers:
The analog stick and pad are both easily accessible, the analog shoulder buttons are great. I like the idea of having 2 ports to plug in memory cards, jump packs, etc.

Gamecube controllers:
It might take a bit of getting used to, but after a few bouts of Mario Sunshine you really get to learn how the whole thing is organized. The analog stick is in a good spot, but the D-Pad isn't right. I like how the face buttons are placed, it's fairly intuitive once you know where they are. The "Z" button can be a bit tricky however. The "C" stick is in a good spot as long as you don't have to use it often during play. Oh, and the analog/digital shoulder buttons work well too.

Which ones do you like? :p

I'd just like to say, that imho there are zero redeeming factors for the Atari 5200 controller.

what about the Jaguar controller? There's a numeric keypad on the damn thing! What purpose does that serve? <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

Well, quite a few games used the numeric keypad to offer additional functions like changing camera views, activate alternative weapons, etc.

Numeric Keypad combinations allowed you to turn music off and on, and I think reset the game (it's been a while.)

The controller actually sits fairly comfortably in my hands.

The pack-in XBOX controller is awesome and one of the best game controllers ever made. Everything that was wrong with the DC pad is made right.

The smaller XBOX Controller S is OK, but not as good as the original.

I agree! Anyone who uses the XBox controller for more than a few minutes will realize it kicks ass! My hands aren't big, and I was worried that I would have problems with it, but it's perfectly formed! I can play games for hours on end with no strain whatsoever.

Maybe the pack in Xbox controller is good for HALO...and other 3d games...but if you took it to class with all the other 2D games from history, you'd probly have a worse time. SF, KOF, etc etc.

I really liked the PSX controller when it first came out. I remember how stlish I thought it looked, and how cryptic. "triangls?! circles?! That's crazy!" this is before the dual shock controller came around, when i was playing jumping flash on the PSX in target.

Otherwise, i really like the Duo's controller. it's nice and simple, and just reminds me of the NES and the good ole days of simplicity.

peace the fuck out,

i dont like the gc controller.
i dont like how its molded to where it kinda clicks
when you move the analog pad around the groves.
it gives me the feeling of constrained movement
and the D pad which is the only way i can play RE
is a little too far away to be used comfortably.

In the short experience i had with a gamecube controller i actually liked it. It fits your hand like a dream. The X-Box pad is the worst its just to damn big, don't like that one bit.

NeoCD Pads suck ass. I mean WTF is up with that excuse for a dpad?

From the NES to the XBox I can't imagine a controller that I've used that wasn't comfortable at least. The best controller designs however have to be:

Saturn for Fighting
PSX for almost everything EXCEPT 2D fighting
Tie between N64 and GC for the best "Mario/Zelda" controllers out there.

BTW, the XBox pad is huge but comfy. Although it's fine for me (I have pretty big hands), my GF and many other lady friends I hang out with say it's too damn big to use for too long.

Peace

I myself have found it hard to like the Neo CD pad. I bought it hearing all these great stories about the clicky pad and how it's the best controller ever and to be honest, I can't seem to adjust to it. It's great for Cyberlip and games like Sengoku and Ninja Combat, but for fighters and Baseball games, the pad has far too much "travel" kind of like an ANALOG stick but it's not analog, so I have difficulty adjusting to it.

I still have to say that the Old Style Neo Sticks are the best I've used for Neo Geo....

The DC pad is absolutely awful for 6-button fighting games. Using the left trigger as FP is the biggest pain in the ass.

3DO:
Never had one so can't tell.

DC:
I hate that controller. The digital pad is just crap (especially when performing moves).

NGC:
I agree to td741's oppinion here. Good controller but hard to get used to it if you played with a Dual Shock most of the time. One thing I don't like about the pad is the red B-Button which isn't placed right and a little too small.

the Xbox pad is great when you get used to it. when playing genma onimusha and halo for a while it feels like your holding nothing, it's that fitting.

Maybe I like a lot of the joysticks because I don't primarily play fighters, or at least not 6 button fighters.

XBox:
I can't pass judgement on it just yet. So far my small experience with it has not been very pleasant. (My hand cramped up both times I've used it.)

N64:
Same as the XBox, I haven't played with it often. When I have, the controller was a hindrance but I figured it takes some getting used to.

NES:
They were okay, but I didn't own a NES and I was more used to an actual joystick back then. :p

SMS:
I like the SMS pads but I think the alot of the games don't have tight controls. For some reason, I think that I play some games and the character isn't following what I'm pressing. Hmm... Maybe next time I play with mine, I'll use Genesis pads. :p

NGCD pads:
I like them, but I usually use the sticks for everything. The Neo has it's faire share of games where you need to wiggle the stick and pound on buttons (ie: KoM2) that a pad just doesn't help. :p
