Thinking about getting into the TG16/Duo scene. I hear there are some awesome shooters on these systems.(The two thunder games for starters) The point of this thread is just to get a little bit of info from people. From what I'veread if I get a Turbo Duo I'll be able to play everything accept Japanese card games and Arcade cd games if this is incorrect please let me know. I figure I'll just get a US Duo and a Jap Pc Engine if I'm right. Next few questions How do I play Arcade CDs. Where are good places to get systems and/games besides TDZ.

Lastly and most importantly what games are known favorites other than the two Thunder shooters and Dracula X.

Wow you're not asking much are you? ;)

I wasn't even interested in the Turbo-16/Duo until I went to a gaming convention (MAGFest) in Roanoke, VA 2 weeks ago and totally fell in love with it. In fact I just bought a Duo from Shadowland earlier today on these boards.

As far as finding systems TZD is probably the safest bet, the only other place I've generally seen them is on Ebay. Some games aren't too expensive, but others (read: Dracula X) you'll probably have to pay out the ass for. :(

Games-wise the Lords of Thunder series and Dracula X are both great (got to play them at the convention as well). The system is BIG on shooters so there are a lot to choose from. The Bonk's Adventure series is good IMO, and I was a fan of the 2 pinball games (Alien's Crush and Devil's Crush, both of which seem to be hard to find). On the RPG side, I've heard the Ys series is excellent. I really don't know a whole lot about the ones that people consider favorites, though, I'm curious as well as to what people respond with.

Hope that helps.

I miss my Duo....I sold my Duo with 16 US Card Games 16 US CD Games and 28 Import CD Games including Dracula X and Y's 4. I regret that to this day.

If you get a duo get a japanese one so you can play the much more varied selection of hu Cards avalible for the system. You will be able to play all the domestic Cd's on it also. As for the us hu-cards just about all of them are attainable in japanese form some even with Extra stuff on them.
By the way Shameless plug I have a Duo R for sale in my Selling thread in Everything else check the pic there.

Thanks

Umm... First off..

A US TurboDuo will allow you to play US HuCards, JPN CD 2.0 and most SCD (3.0) games. There is a faulty check mechanism in some demo disks and I believe Bonanza Brothers that will fail with a US SCD system (either US SCD Card or a US Duo). There is one game that uses the CD1.0 card, and that's Altered Beast CD. The game is playable, but you can't get past the 1st stage without a proper CD1.0 card.

To play JPN HuCards you'll need to get yourself a Converter (there are several, but the Kisado is so far the best one) or you need to mod your system. (From what I can tell, they've swapped a few pins.)

To play Arcade Card Games you need an Arcade Card DUO or Arcade Card Pro. Both of these are Japanese HuCards so you'll need a converter/mod in order to use them on a US System.

An Arcade Card Duo holds the extra Arcade Card Ram, and piggy banks unto the system's built in Super CD software. (So in the case of a (US) TurboDuo you'll still get the US Super CD boot-up screen even after you plug in a ArcadeCard Duo.)

An Arcade Card Pro hols the extra Arcade Card Ram and a Japanese Super CD software. This is the most universal card available as it will work with all cd-based systems (well, you need a converter/mod for US system). I usually recommend getting the ACPro (if you're getting an AC) because:
a) it doubles as an SCD card. If ever your Duo dies, you have the option of replacing it with a TurboGrafx-16 + CD attachement, PCENgine + CD Attachment, PCEngine Duo, TurboDuo. If you ever replace with a Non-Duo cd-based system, you'll have SCD and AC capability. If you go with an ACDuo, then you are much more limited.
b) It includes the Japanese SCD software which will enable you to use the one or two problem titles.
c) It's generally the same price (at one point they were cheaper.)

As for favorites...

There are loads of good games.

What genre do you want?

Umm... Off the top of my head (not including the ones you mentioned.)

Shooters:
Blazing Lazers (Hu), Soldier Blade (Hu), Magical Chase (Hu), Rayxander II (JCD2.0), L-Dis (JCD2.0), Spriggan (JCD2.0), Spriggan 2 (JSCD), Maccross 2036 (JSCD), Nexzr (or the Summer Carnival version called Nexzr Special) (JSCD), Sapphire (ACD), Parodius (JHu), Dentana Twinbee (JHu), Gradius II (JSCD), RType Complete (JSCD), Cotton (SCD)

RPGs:
Legend of Xanadu II (JSCD, boss fights are done like a brawler, you can have a 2nd player helping you.), Ys Book I&II (CD2.0), Ys Book IV (JSCD), AnEarth's Fantasy Story (JSCD), Cosmic Fantasy 2 (CD2.0, it's hard to start but after a while the story picks up.), Dragonslayer: Legend of Heroes (SCD)

Adventures:
Beyound Shadowgate (SCD), Loom (SCD), Dungeon Explorer (Hu, 5 player gauntlet), Dungeon Explorer II (SCD, 5 player gauntlet)

If you're into the Wonder boy games there are these ones:
-Wonderboy in Monsterland (JHu)
-The Dragon's Curse (Hu, same as SMS game Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap).
-MonsterLair (CD2.0): I believe this was the Arcade WonderBoy III. You had alternative shoot-em-up and wonder-boy like stages.
-Dynastic Hero (SCD): remake of Genesis' WonderBoy IV but heros are now bugs.
-(Closely related) New Adventure Island.

Umm...

Brawlers:
-SF2' Championship Edition (JHu)
-Art of Fighting (ACD)
-Fatal Fury 2/Special (ACD)
-Godzilla (SCD) (not amazing but decent for a Godzilla.)

Side Scrolling Brawlers:
-Ranma 1/2 Part 1 (JCD2.0, very good for a CD2.0)
-Riot Zone (SCD, not amazing, but okay'ish. This system doesn't have many side-scrolling brawlers)
-River City Ransom (JSCD, not too easy to find.)
-Umm...ahh... I don't remember the name of this game but I've got it. :p I think it's "Warriors of Fate"? It's a capcom side-scrolling fighter. The player's fighter is always on horseback.
-Mad Stalker (ACD) Lots of recycled graphics, after initial load, everythign is there. :p

Digital Comics:
-Galaxy Fraulien Yuna (best one I've played) (JSCD)
-3x3 Eyes (JSCD/ACD)

Platformers:
-Yoshimoto Comedy (JSCD): themed backgrounds/characters, some weird Japanese Humour, mini-games.
-Shockman (Hu) (aka ShyubibinMan 2 (JHu)) and ShyubibinMan 3 (JCD2.0) are good Megaman-ish 2 player games. Alternating stages are shooters.
-Kaze Kiri (JSCD) a sort of Shinobi/Kenseiden like scroller
-Shadow of the Beast (SCD) this is probably *THE* definitive version of this game. It lacks some of the parallax scrolling in some areas (compared to the original Amiga version), the actual main character animation is better, controls work better with 2 buttons, the CD sountrack is top-notch as well.

Racing:
-Motoroader (and variants). The US only has "Motoroader". It's a 5 player top-down racing game.
-Victory Run isn't a bad Outrun clone, but it's not spectacular.

Sports:
-Davis Cup Tennis (JSCD, Hu). The game's the same be it on JSCD and Hu. I think you can pick it up cheap at NSCX (probably the only game they have left). It's okay. ;)

Puzzle:
-Bomberman! (the original Bomberman comes hidden on the Gate of Thunder 4-in-1 disk making it a 5-in-1 disk. :p ), then there's Bomberman '93 and '94. If that's not enough, there's that Chicken Game that was released with one magazine that's a little similar.
-Buster Bros (CD2.0)
-Splash Lake (CD2.0)

Strategy:
-Military Madness (Hu)
-Neo Nectaris (JSCD aka Military Madness 2)
-Macross: Do You Remember Love (JSCD): fairly decent strategy game.
-Vasteel (CD2.0, you can play either side in the conflict, you can choose battles to be fought via computer control or you can control the duels. It's a strategy game based on different mechs. Each side has their own mech desings. I think there are about 20 different types of mechs as well.)
-Vasteel 2 (JSCD/ACD: It's compatible with the Mouse, the MemoryBase 128, uses up the Arcade Card if it's there. It's more a strategy game then the first Vasteel (which was more of a action/strategy)) This game plays a lot like the Macross strategy game, and at least count costs a lot less.

Umm... There are others. Not all of these are "must haves" but are titles that go into my mind.

You might want to look out for the Sherlock HOlmes titles if you want to see how PMV worked ont he Duo. (Umm, and then Gulliver Boy (JSCD) to see HuVideo FMV sequences.)

Other curiosities:
-Last Alert (CD2.0): The US version has TERRIBLE voice acting. The graphics aren't that great either, but it's a half-way decent Metal-Gear/Contra rip off. :p
-Final Zone II (CD2.0): About on par with Last Alert in voice acting. The graphics are better. It's a top-down commando-like game. I enjoy it. ;)

TD 741 awesome thanks alot.

I think the US Duo looks snazzy so I'll get one and a converter with an arcade card pro so I'll be able to play everything.

Anybody got one to sell or trade me ;)

that's not so bad since they have New US duo's at TDZ for 200.

200=75 for converter + 30 for Jap arcade card= 305 to be able to play everything but supergrafx cards(I think)

Do what I did - get a US TG16 and a Japanese Duo. It's probably easier that way. ;)

TDZ used to have converter for sale and nowadays nobody is making any at all (of course, Duo is dead already........)

Rumor that TDZ will make new converter....

This might be a better way to get your Turbo Fix...

The Turbo Duo is a great way to get started if you're not looking to play any arcade titles or Japanese HuCards. Since the Kisado Converter is very hard to find (and also pretty expensive), this would probably be your best bet. Otherwise, go with the original TG-16 w/ CD system attachment. You can probably get both pieces pretty cheaply, and it will allow you to use the smaller, infamous "Barney Converter" (it's called that because it's purple). Despite comments about the converter not working, it operates for me just fine and it's probably much cheaper than the Kisado. It doesn't work in the Duo since the end with the connectors (Barney Converter) will not be able to slide in completely into the HuCard slot. As for Arcade Cards, I've seen both the Pro and the Duo go for about $60-$80. There's a store that has a bunch of PC-Engine/TG-16 stuff for sale and display, so during one of my trips to the city I can look them up for you.

Using the TG-16 w/ CD-Attachment setup (with Arcade Card Pro), there are almost no games that you cannot play (except Altered Beast which is specifically a System 1.0 Game). Bonanza Brothers, an excellent, slapstick cops & robbers game where you play the crooks, works fine on my setup.

td741 posted some great games... I'm just going to add a few more titles to the list:

R-Type Complete is HIGHLY recommended, as well as Parodius.

Some other titles you may want to look for are:
Galaga '90 (HuCard), Fantasy Zone (HuCard) (simple, fun shooters)
Dragon Spirit (HuCard) - The classic Atari Shooter
Super Darius (JCD)
Sinistron (HuCard) - It's OK... nothing too flashy
Ordyne (HuCard) - Cartoonish and LOTS of fun
Air Zonk (HuCard) - Bonk in his shooter adventure. Also lots of fun
Psychosis (HuCard) - An R-Type clone with LOTS of colors and weird characters. If you can, get the Japanese one... the bosses sometimes stick their middle finger out at you.
Toilet Kids (JSCD) - Evil toilet humor... kids get sucked into a toilet and have to shoot their way out.
Forgotten Worlds (SCD) - The famous Capcom shooter is great
Sidearms (HuCard) - Fast paced & furious... pretty close to the arcade version
Red Moon (HuCard) - EXCELLENT shooter.
Mesopotamia (JHuCard) - Wierd, yet fun shooter based on the Zodiacs

... and if you remember Konami title "Life Force" in the arcades, you can get the Japanese game Salamander (JHuCard). Whatever you do, STAY FAR AWAY FROM DEEP BLUE (HuCard). One of the PC-Engine's "duller moments".

There are SO MANY shooters for this system... if you want this genre, you're all set.

Ys Book I&II is ESSENTIAL. A Must have! However, Ys III was a little boring compared to the whole series. Ys IV is also a classic.

Other RPGs to look for will be:
Neutopia & Neutopia II (HuCards) - The Zelda Clones that play pretty nicely
Cosmic Fantasy III (JSCD) - If you're in the mood for strictly Japanese RPGs, this game is great.
Far East OF Eden - Ziria (JCD or JSCD)...I think this title was an RPG
Lastly... if you're looking for Gauntlet-style RPGs, DEFINITELY get Dungeon Explorer (HuCard) and Dungeon Explorer II (SCD). The sequal is just out of this world! One of the PC-Engine's BETTER moments.

Adventures:
Beyound Shadowgate (SCD), Loom (SCD), Dungeon Explorer (Hu, 5 player gauntlet), Dungeon Explorer II (SCD, 5 player gauntlet)

Heh... seems as if I'm not the only one that likes DE. :)

Brawlers:
-SF2' Championship Edition (JHu)
-Art of Fighting (ACD)
-Fatal Fury 2/Special (ACD)
-Godzilla (SCD) (not amazing but decent for a Godzilla.)

But wait... there's more!!!
World Heroes 2 (ACD)
Kabuki Den Fighter (ACD) - recommended
Flash Hiders (SCD)
Sailor Moon (JSCD) - Hard to find... I'm still looking for this one
Ranma 1/2 Part 3 (JSCD) - Uses storylines from the actual anime (seasons 2-3) to put together this wacky, yet fun story. Even has a Vs. mode.

Art Of Fighting for the ACD tends to be a little buggy, and is cursed with lag time. FFS with the Arcade Card Pro plays like a dream... almost IDENTICAL to the Neo Geo MVS with almost no loading time.

Side Scrolling Brawlers:
-Ranma 1/2 Part 1 (JCD2.0, very good for a CD2.0)
-Riot Zone (SCD, not amazing, but okay'ish. This system doesn't have many side-scrolling brawlers)
-River City Ransom (JSCD, not too easy to find.)
-Umm...ahh... I don't remember the name of this game but I've got it. I think it's "Warriors of Fate"? It's a capcom side-scrolling fighter. The player's fighter is always on horseback.
-Mad Stalker (ACD) Lots of recycled graphics, after initial load, everythign is there. :p

Vigilante (HuCard)

Digital Comics:
-Galaxy Fraulien Yuna (best one I've played) (JSCD)
-3x3 Eyes (JSCD/ACD)

Ranma 1/2 Part 2 (JCD)
Urutsei Yatsura - Stay With You (CD)
... and if I recall, there are also digital comics for Sailor Moon and Maison Ikkoku as well.

Ninja Spirit (HuCard) - HIGHLY recommended
New Adventure Island (HuCard) - The Nintendo favorite finds its way to the PC-Engine and is pretty damn good.
JJ & Jeff (HuCard) - If you can, find the Japanese version called Kato & Ken. LOTS of slapstick, and toilet humor. "Farts" are a weapon in this game. :)
Legend of Hero Toma (HuCard)
Legendary Axe (HuCard) - A Classic... the sequal was OK...
New Zealand Story (JHuCard) - Hard to find story in the Bubble Bobble Series
Liquid Kids (JSCD) - Ditto
Rainbow Island (CD) - Double Ditto
Tiger Road (HuCard) - A little difficult at times
Batman (HuCard) - Hard to find, yet lots of fun. Run around in a maze and beat people to death.

Racing:
-Motoroader (and variants). The US only has "Motoroader". It's a 5 player top-down racing game.
-Victory Run isn't a bad Outrun clone, but it's not spectacular.

FInal Lap Twin (HuCard) is also an excellent HuCard game with an interesting "Quest Mode". I also have a Driving Game for the JSCD that is lots of fun, but I can't remember the name of it... my friend has it and won't let it go. :D

Victory Run can get REALLY frustrating at times, but is worth a play.

Sports:
-Davis Cup Tennis (JSCD, Hu). The game's the same be it on JSCD and Hu. I think you can pick it up cheap at NSCX (probably the only game they have left). It's okay. ;) [/B]

World Court Tennis is more cartoonish and actually a little more fun. There's also a crazy "Quest Mode" on this as well.
Super Dodge Ball (JHuCard) - 'Nuff said... :D
Andre Palaz Kickboxing (SCD) - I know I mispelled his last name... :)
Fire Pro Wrestling (ACD) - A weird, yet interesting wrestling title for the Arcade Card

Puzzle:
-Bomberman! (the original Bomberman comes hidden on the Gate of Thunder 4-in-1 disk making it a 5-in-1 disk.), then there's Bomberman '93 and '94. If that's not enough, there's that Chicken Game that was released with one magazine that's a little similar.
-Buster Bros (CD2.0)
-Splash Lake (CD2.0)

Klax (HuCard) - The BEST home translation of this game. You'll be addicted in no time!
Panic Bomberman (JSCD) - Excellent Game
Puyo Puyo (JSCD) - The BEST puzzle game... period. The sequal exists for the PC-Engine, but it's hard to find.
And I think Colums exists as well on JHuCard.

Other curiosities:
-Last Alert (CD2.0): The US version has TERRIBLE voice acting. The graphics aren't that great either, but it's a half-way decent Metal-Gear/Contra rip off.
-Final Zone II (CD2.0): About on par with Last Alert in voice acting. The graphics are better. It's a top-down commando-like game. I enjoy it.

It Came From The Desert (CD) - HIGLY RECOMMENDED for silliness and fromage... guilty pleasure.
Parasol Stars (HuCard) - The Story of Bubble Bobble III, and it's LOADS of fun. This ONLY exists on the PC-Engine.

These are just some off of the top of my head as well... SO many games to look for in the TG-16/PC-Engine world... nothing short of being one the best systems of all time!

Just wanted to add this.

I resurrected an page from an old website I used to have (ie: circa 1995) with little mini reviews of Turbo/PCEngine games.

I'm toying with the idea of modernizing the look, adding in depth reviews (not solely PCEngine though).

Anyway you can check it out here: Old website.

Excuse the... err... look. ;)

It's pretty good PCengine page with good reviews.

Only one mistake I've found in your "Golden Axe" review:

I can almost consider myself a connaisseur of "Golden Axe" variations. I've played the Arcade, PC, Amiga, Commodore 64, SegaCD and Sega Master System versions of this game....

I don't think there is a SegaCD version of Golden Axe ;)

Considering I wrote this a long time ago and hurredly. Although I'll accept all corrections. :)

I was refering to the pack-in that came with the first generation SegaCD. It's probably just the cart version put on CD, but I've never played the cart version. :)

td741 did a great job explaining everything.

Just a couple things I'd add is if you get a converter, I'd recommend the Orange Kisado. It was the lastest release and works with the Duo and the Turbo express.

As for playing Jap HU Cards, I'd suggest that you get a Super Grafx. Then you can play all the Jap PC-E games plus the Super Grafx games.

You mentioned a liking for shooters and the SGX has a couple great shooters on it..... Aldynes, 1941 Counter Attack, and Darius Plus. Darius Plus is actually a hybrid game. It will play on the PC-E but has better graphics when played on the SGX.

As for buying PC-E games. I have dealt with this guy a few times.

try-ace

He's a really trustworthy seller and does deal on ebay from time to time, although i forget his user ID on there.

I have dealt with this guy twice.
Currently I have a bit problem and I'm waiting for his answer.

I won his eBay auction and got the game early this week. I found out last night that the game wasn't working at all.

Just want to see if he's willing to replace another copy for me.

Read my other thread regarding eBay problem

Liquid,
Sorry to hear you had a problem with a game from this guy. I read your ebay thread and would be interested in knowing what try ace does.
I know you are aware of your situation, with leaving feedback before testing the game. That does complicate matters a little.
He always responded fast to me, but then again I never had a problem with anything. I even placed a $400 plus order with him before and he was great through the entire transaction.
I hope it all works out for you.
