Do you ever find yourself caring less about games?

I don't know what it is, but over the last 6 months, my interest in videogames in general has nearly died. I still pick up and play occasionally, but for the most part, I feel noting like I used to when I played them.

I finally got Hoshigami and Metal Gear Solid 2 after waiting months and months and months. I have not even spent more than 5-6 hours with either. I have not played a GBA game since launch, not played more than an hour of NEO for over a month and a half. My DC hasn't seen and regular action since Cap vs. SNK. God only know how long it's been since I played my Saturn, Genesis, NES or SNES. I only played the Wonderswan and NGPC in the hospital, since there was nothing else to do.

I played THPS3 for about 2 weeks, until I was unable to pass the Pirate Island level. Then I gave up.

I find myslef not caring for the really good stuff, only what is super-hyped, like MGS2, GTAIII, or Splashdown? I just can't get excited about games anymore. My gaming woody is gone.

What is wrong with me?

Not sure what your problem is, but you spent a lot more time on Metal Gear Solid 2 than I did...

I hardly played Devil May Cry too...

Face it, next gen games aren't really games... Next time, rent a movie. Better picture quality and takes up less time.

No seriously though - There is no gamers viagra. You'll never grow a geek woody again.

That's what I was afraid of. And I think you are right. For all their spiffy pixel shaded bump mip mapping, they really suck.

But even my old games don't do it for me any more.

The only game remotley interesting to me right now is Kingdom Hearts, and that won't be out for at least a year or so.

I find myself doing alot more technical things, like console mods and hacks. I have an extreme interest in taking things apart, finding out what makes them tick, and trying to improve it. That is the only game relater thing that gers me off any more. I have tunnel vision working on this USB adapter for Nick_th_Fury. Nothing else interests me, not TV, not eating, not anything. I lay on my couch at 4 am trying to sleep, wondering about grounds, common points, and controler chips. What if the gravis pad uses more than one common point? How can I change that? If I touch the common point while I have it plugged in, will it fry my hand? If the L&R buttons use pin 12 for common, can I use it for A,B,C, &D? I'm going insane! Just try to find a 2 row DB 15 male cable anywhere!

It's the end of an era.

It doesn't matter what I play. None of it is good enough. I should just quit.

Ah, there were times in my life (LOL) that I felt the same way. Honestly, I'm back into games now more than ever. Sometimes you just don't want to mess with them. But a month and a half of not wanting to play? Hmm, what are you doing instead? Seems like something is taking up more time, perhaps?

I'll play until I'm dead, that's all I know.

If it makes you feel any better, I went out of video games from '96 - '01 (I still played, but very VERY rarely). I recently got back in around the end of '00/beginning of '01. There was so much that I missed, such as Real Bout series, Last Blade, Metal Slug, later KOF series. Alas though, although I do enjoy the newer games, I still find my old loves in games such as SS2, FFS, and AOF2 more appealing then any others.

Take a break, find something else to do for awhile. Take up another hobby. Then after a month or so, go back to your games and I think you will notice a difference.

This has happened to me once or twice over the last few years where I just felt "blah" about all my games. So I took some time off and took up model building and collecting DVD's. The change will do you good.

With me at least, my waning interest in video games can be chaulked up to one thing specifically...lack of gaming friends. When I was younger I had a small group of friends that would play games to death. Video games were a social thing...it was competitive and it was entertaining...and it provided shared experiences.

Now that I am "grown-up" and living with my nongaming girlfriend I see my gaming crew much less frequently. Hence, my desire to play games has decreased dramatically.

Geez guys! I just got back from visiting some friends up north and reading this made me... kinda depressed.
Take the words of wisdom Ghost Dog spoke of. Take a break.

I was out of gaming about from 1998-2000. Playstation just didn't interest me in the slightest bit and at the time, I wasn't a super diehard Saturn fanatic.
One day I went to a friend's house to study for the big Physics (blah) test on Friday and I noticed he had a Saturn. He was the first guy I knew who owned a Saturn and somehow that made me feel like all, "WOW."

He had Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Bust-A-Move 2 and I ask if I could borrow it for fun, then he said, just take it. I never play them anymore.
So I played them when I got home and became the crazed sumbitch I am today. It revived my love of video games.

I will admit though, and I was just talking about it with my friends up north just last morning. Games these days are not the same nor will they ever be. The days of walking in pizza parlors with cheese goo smell in the air and sticky floors with sounds of little kids and "Hadoken!" are gone. Or at least, THAT SPECIAL FEELING is seemingly gone. And it's sad to think about.

I remember my obssession when World Heroes first came out. Haha. WH2 and Jet I all played with a burning passion. Damn, those days are gone.

New titles just don't really excite me for more than maybe a week or so.
I'm just looking to get a few more Saturn titles and then close up the shop for now....

ON A LIGHTER NOTE....

I dunno what is more low; trying to hit on a girl who just lost her boyfriend or trying to buy some games off a man who just lost his passion for games.

I agree, there is definitely a different air about gaming today. Chalk it up to our hobby being overtaken by traditional "non-gamers", plus the death of arcades..

Sometimes it's better to stick with the old ways. That's why I have so much love for my Master System, Neo MVS, Genesis, Saturn, ad nauseum. The only recent system I had any tru passion for was the Dreamcast, and look what happened to it.

I also get what you mean about gaming friends making a difference. When I was a teen, I had a larger group of friends who all played games together. We would sit around playing an RPG with one person at the controller, and the others helping solve puzzles/making maps/giving tips. Try doing that with a friend around nowadays... see how fast they (or you) get bored and demand a two player game.

Over the years, the group moved on, moved away, or just stopped hanging out with each other. It will never truly be the same, but at least I still have most of my old games and systems, as well as a shitload of memories.

This has happened to me on a few levels.

First when I was in highschool and had gaming friends we played Final Fantasy 6. Albeit seperately. We came to work to stock a grocery work but we talked about the game and stuff. It was fun sharing secrets and in some cases seeing how quick we can get in and out of areas.

I mean, I have no buds to hang with that are gamers. Oh yeah, I had something of an dirty pair addiction too at the time heh heh. broads with guns. can't beat em.

anyway, just walk away from it. you dont have to game EVERY day.

Heh, my buds and I did the same thing with RPGs. I remember when Secret of Mana came out and we could all play at the same time....now that is a fond memory. We need more multiplayer RPGs damnit.

Pretty much the same here. People move and people change. One goes down. Then comes another and before you know it it's just you and two other friends reflecting back on the days of yonder.
But such is life is it not?

I really wanted to reply to this topic with some of my opinions but Ghost Dog and Steve pretty much took every word out of my mouth. Games feel different now, too many graphics whore casual gamers, death of the arcades etc. those are the problems.

The same thing has happened to me.

I havent played GBA for 3 months

I havent Played Neo-Geo for like 2 months

No Dreamcast, PS, or really even Game Cube. (When I played with some friends)

The only thing I've had the desire to play is GTA3, and not more that 40 minutes at that.

I do collecto DVDs. Funny you should mention models. I looked all over last night, and the hardest model I could find in Lawrence was a skill level 2. All the stores around here just sell Nascar stock racers and shit. No Space Shuttles, no 1/64, no 1/6, it's all 1/144 or some stupid shit like that.

The Wal-Marts and Targets here are full of those stupid Pre-painted metal models that you put together with a screwdriver. Those suck ass.

I just kinda fall in and out with video games. In like the past year or so I've really gotten back into them, what with my portable system collecting and my recent discovery of the glory that is Dreamcast. The only times that I really fall off is when I have a girlfriend, seeing as how that is where a large amount of my time and money would then go LOL. There's always other stuff to do, but I don't think that this will ever fully die out for me.

Yep, Steve and Ghost Dog pretty much locked it down tight.

I play games, LOTS of games, but it just isn't the same as it used to be.

Once in a great while a new game comes along that captures the magic and your interest, but it quickly fades away.

The last two games that did this were PSO and DWVII.

I'm just taking a break from gaming for a short while, for about a week. Taking up some reading and meditation. Watch chop-socky movies.

I got seriously into guitar when I took a leave of games. Great hobby! Now that I'm back into games, I can transcribe the music I hear for it. It doesn't matter what new games come out, I will still love my old ones.

Which reminds me, I brought my Dreamcast to work and was playing SF3 - Double Impact, and my manager was like "look at those backrounds! they're weak! those guys aren't even moving that much!", and I told him "this game came out like 3 or 4 years ago, you have to realize this was ground breaking for 2d". He turned to me and was like "well my x-box can do this.. plus a whole lot more.." and proceeded to go on about that.

Which brings me to my point - I get pretty bitter about graphics whores. They almost ruin everything for me. I can't honestly see how people can be into graphics and not care about gameplay

I know this strays from the topic somewhat but Yesterday my brother wanted me to talk to one of his online friends and convince him that Tekken was a more complex game than DOA. Well I was talkin to the guy and the first question I asked him "What is the most important thing in a fighting game" and the first thing he says is "Graphics, graphics are the most important" then I told him "wrong, gameplay is the most important, never sacrifice gameplay at the expense of graphics" and then he replies with "thats your opinion". He also told me I didn't know what I was talkin about. Clearly he didn't even understand the gameplay of his own favorite game DOA, he only likes it cuz he was a graphics whore. These are the reasons why people are straying from games cuz Graphics whores are ruining everything.

I've had my few run ins with Xbox fanboys and most of them are the worst kind of graphics whores.
