Ok, here's a trend I've noticed on the board and from people I know.

If there is a big game that's coming out, that's "mainstream" (ie. it's on the cover of game mags, non gamers are talking/know about it), and it has hype to it. Why do a lot of people talk down about them or refuse to play them based on this hype or it's "mainstream" appeal?

I've seen this happen time and time again. I think it has something to do with being "hardcore" and not liking/playing the big games, even if they're good makes you hardcore. A good example is some friends of mine who don't want to play Wolfenstien even though they admit that it's good. I can't get them to admit why they won't play it. They hear me and a lot of other people talking about it, but they refuse to play.

This idea kinda came to me after my "debate" with Neobuyer over graphics of GGX vs. MS3. It seems that a lot of people here don't want to play or enjoy a 3D fighter or some new games that the "mainstream" play. Even if those games are good.
Another good example is PSX/PS2. People hate FF7 because it was hyped and hugely succesful. As well as the PSX/PS2. They hate it, and refuse to buy one even if it has games they'd like. Why? Because it killed the Saturn or DC, or that there are a lot of really stupid people who love it and act dumb when you talk about other systems. I mean with all the games that are out there for it, people still say the PS2 is crap and they want Sony to crash and burn. A good corolary is Squaresoft. People are mad because the SNES won out in the 16bit days and as a result people played and fell in love with Final Fantasy instead of Phantasy Star or Y's. And when newer games like Skies of Arcadia come out, they're ignored because of the new Final Fantasy that just came out. And while the games are actually quality stuff, they have to hate them because they're successfull and take away from other games they like. So as a result FF or Square games are crap in thier minds.

So, am I right? Am I wrong? Do you suffer from hype hatred? Let's hear it!

Peace

No..
Games tend to be hyped because they are good.. I don't mean hyped by just the company pushing it.. But in the sense that people are talking about it because it's a good game. For instance, Metal Gear Solid. EXTREMELY hyped. Good game. GTA3.. Same deal.

No question on that there from me man, but notice that people will still say that the PS2 sucks and has shite games, even with those titles out. Just read a few of the threads around here on PS2 and the like. You'll see people pop in with "Sony sucks" and the like posts.

Not trying to spam but here's somthing fun I have to add to this before I hit the sack.

If you've seen this happen, isn't it the greatest feeling in the world to see people break down and buy/play the game?

For instance I have one friend who is so anti Sony it's not even funny. He's a Nintendo and Sega diehard and HATES Sony for killing N64 and DC. He loved Final Fantasy and other RPG's but hated they were on PSX. When I was playing them he was like they suck, they're on Sony. But when he got the PC versions, they were great. Now my ultimate joy is him calling me up to ask if he could borrow the PS2 for a week so he could play through MGS2. He hates Sony but he can't take it anymore. Man it feels good to see the good games come through !

hahah.
well said.
cvS2 is what cvS1 should have been.
but anyways.
i think there are some intstances that
games are overhyped.
i think 70 percent they cant live up to it
because its just pushed that much.
some titles are worth it though.
such as the new metal gear and i suppose ffx.
its good when the product can live up to the
hype though.
i doubt anyone can argue with that...

I think the original MGS was overhyped. I don't understand why some people think t's the best game ever. It's good, yes, maybe even very good, I would give at at most 8.5 out of 10. But for as much as it was hyped, you'd think it was the second coming. The cinemas were grainy as hell.

But why does it ruin it for you? Can't people just look past the hype and play the game for what it really is?

I don't think it's so much the hype as it is that the game doesn't live up to the hype. I present you with certain examples:

1) Mortal Kombat Mythologies. You could play as Sub-Zero and get him through his backstory. It seemed like the kind of game that couldn't be bad. However, the MK control scheme doesn't lend itself to a side-scroller too well.

2) BloodStorm. Basically Mortal Kombat to the nth power (actually more like Time Killers^n). You could hack off opponent's limbs, throw your weapon at the guy, decapitate the guy mid-round. Instant kills basically ruin just about any game (Guilty Gear was good enough to not be ruined, however, and the instant kills actually showed some ingenuity).

3) Sonic Adventure 2. Maybe it was because Sega was in somewhat more dire straits than they had planned on being in, but what good is a Sonic game that doesn't let you play as Sonic throughout the whole game?

4) Brutal: Paws of Fury. This game was supposed to be so innovative, letting you learn your moves as you go. However, your opponents had all their moves (did I mention how I hate cheap odds-stacking in fighting games?).

5) Rise of the Robots. Do I really need to continue? The game had great graphics, but not much (or anything) else. Each character had two whole moves, and the different strengths of attacks were just the weak attack animation played more slowly. I rented it to see if it was really as bad as I heard (no, I'm not completely psycho--that would be if I had bought it ). It was that bad and oh so much worse.

6)Dragon Ball Final Bout. The link in my sig can bring you one step closer to my shredding of this game. This isn't a game, it's audio-visual sodomy.

Sometimes the hype pisses me off. For example, people don't shutup about Grand Theft Auto 3. They always rave on and on about the same thing over and over again, and 3/4s of the time sound like idiots when they're talking about it too. They usually don't even know what they're talking about. For instance, there are people in my school that I always hear people saying stuff like "The graphix in Grand Theft Auto 3 are like ooooooooooooooooooooooh maaan ahhhh they're so good, they look SO real! It's amazing, no other system can do that. [A few minutes later]: The graphix in Pikmin are like ohhhhhhhhhhhh man I can't even explain it, they looks so great, no system can do that! I mean the resolution is so high!". A couple of days later you'll here something like: "The graphix in Pikmin suck terribly and I don't like the game anymore." I hate people like that, they don't make sense. This one kid did that with Grandia 2, he loved the game and 6 months after beating it, he doesn't like it anymore. And he always talks about how "The FMV in (Grandia II or FF7) is da best looking FMV I've ever seeeeeeeen!!!!! IT'S SOOOOO GREAT!!!!!" It's people like these that make you not want to play a hyped game (generally because they're talking about a hyped game that they hyped themselves). I try to ignore it, but sometimes I just don't even want to play a game that they've mentioned after that (This annoying "Counterstrike" crap and PS2 shit). Some of my friend's with intelligence actually play these games and try too make me play them, and I play them, and sometimes like them but I just never get around too playing them in the long run anyway.

But anyway, it's hype like this that makes me not want to play a very popular and known game. Sometimes when a game has hype and is popular, I'll play it, but sometimes the intelligence level of the people that play it is so low and after hearing stuff like that, I just figure I'll play it when it costs as much and is as old as NES.

Maybe I'm getting off topic here, but I just have to mention the fact that IHATE HATE HATE (don't like either) people that won't play games because they're "old", "have bad graphix", and are 2-d. I FREAKIN' CAN'T STAND THAT!!!! Usually the people who say that don't even know what good graphics are. I always try to ask people why they won't play them and they give me stupid response like "Doesn't newer mean better" and "I'm a man of the future so I won't play 2-d games unless it's on a handheld". First of all, newer doesn't always mean better (especially in Sony's case). Another thing is that I don't think these people understand that gameplay is the main thing and graphics are secondary, nor do they understand that 2-d can be made to look better and better like 3-d. Playing old games does not make you a "man of the past". Being a "man of the future" would consist of living in a time that's after ours, and then the people of the future time can't consider themselves "people of the future" because they are in the present for them. But um anyway... I just don't understand these people and I wish they would get some sense knocked into their heads because this just shows what's going too happen to the world in the future (especially in the gaming industry) unless these retards gain some intelligence. W00 I'm tired of typing this.

Geeze, this is my longest post yet.

Ok, paragraphs would have helped this, but I don't feel like editing right now.

That's easy. Because hype raises our expectations, and if those expectations aren't met, we are dissapointed.

sometimes a game lives up too it's hype though (especially when it's a SEGA game which has barely any hype unless you just look in the SEGA fan-base).

Hype ruins alot of games. Metal Gear 2(In my opinion) was a must have game. Then I found out you play as that Raiden guy more then 50% of the game. That game sucked, I hated it.

Hideo Kojima is a stupid retard
But I like him since he made Metal Gear 1, which is still the best.

I am not really effected by it because I live in a vaccum and don't read the game mags. I get much of my information from various message boards, word-of-mouth, and experience, so hype doesn't really touch me as much as it does others.

HOwever, there is a different kind of hype out there, and it is what I call "hardcore" hype.

It's the hype ppl in different circles generate. Like here for instance, everybody talks up Last Blade 2, MotW, and MS3 like they are godly games that deserve to be put on pedistals and worshiped.

While I admit they are above average games, they aren't all that. I liked MS3 at first, but once I played through all the paths and beat the game several times, I found myself migrating to MS1 and X more and more.

SO the short answer is: Hype doesn't really affect me all that much.
