PS2 beats XBox and GC!!

Well I just saw a reporting of the holiday console sales on TechTV, below is a list of the number of units SOLD TO CONSUMERS. Lots of companies claim that they have shipped over 1.5Million units, well that just means that they have 1.5 Million units on store shelves or in gamers homes. Well lets look at the lineup:

PS2: 1.4 Million
XBox: 934,000
Game Cube: 640,000

Plus most games on the years best seller list are on PS2, including the best selling game this year Grand Theft Auto 3. And although MS made #2 in units sold, the only XBox game to make it onto the top 10 list was Halo at #7. Nintendo made #2 on the list with Super Smash Bros Melee.

I'm one of the very lucky people to have gotten all 3 and I do have to say that PS2 is my favorite, but I'm not sure about XBox and GC, I was like gung ho GC over the XBox but I've been playing DOA3 and it's incredible on XBox. Although GC still has SO MANY GREAT GAMES it's scarry. I'm a little shocked that Nintendo hasn't been doing as well with the hardware this year. Ahh well, looks like people are going to have a real hard time going up against Sony <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> !

Uhhhh, then why are PS2 games dominating the sales charts? They aren't that easy to pirate yet, as you still have to go through a complex process to play burns. It won't go mainstream till you can just put the bootleg in and play (although if someone else can get the messiah chip out that will change).
But PS2 GAMES are still selling the best out of all of them!

that "complicated process" is a simple swaptrick.. and messiah clones as well as neo 4 are popping up in HK already.

also, ps2 has been on the market for quite a while longer, which means more people have one, which also means more people buy games for it.

Yes but the best selling games were recently released (GTA3 and MGS2).

And up until now you still need an internal mod for PS2 and even the External one requires some internal soddering. It's not as mass market as the PSX was, or the simple boot disc for DC was. Those were the most pirated systems and the market requires things to be easy.

Don't know they were only mentioning "real" consoles as the GBA's sales are not affected by the sales of the normal game consoles.

Duh It has a year ahead of the others of course it's gonna do better.

Those numbers are not really accurate for the whole holiday season. Those statistics reflect fourth-quarter sales through December 8, 2001. We won't really get a final number until the year is over. I know for a fact that Xbox has already reached the million mark (last I heard it was about 300,000 units less than PS2) and the numbers they gave for Gamecube do not reflect the sales of Walmart. Those are defiantly old numbers but I forgot who those where originally from but TechTV did neglect to post that tidbit of info about GC.

PS2 outsold Xbox and GC because it was available everywhere. People wanted xbox or GC got PS2 instead. PS2 were stacked all over the floors at Fry's Electronics.

I wonder how many systems are returned after Christmas.

Here all the gamers i know got a PS2 for xmas and already own one over Xbox and Gamecube cus of the was cool games so it is a fact that PS2 is more popular and has sold more than Xbox and Gamecube.

First month that i got my jap DC I was able to get it modded to play all CDs but the PS2 took how long for a real hip to come out?

From talking to my old friends who still work in gaming and electronic retail I've been told the following:

After the first week of release, anyone who wanted to get a GC or XBox could get one, easily.

Some stores were selling out of one console way over the other in terms of GC and XBox. Like my friend, a manager at CompUSA said that he was selling XBoxes but he could barely keep the GC in stock. My friends at Gamestop (formerly funcoland) had the exact opposite story. However both people said the same thing: They were still selling LOTS of PS2's. No shortages no nothing. The year lead didn't do it for the DC but it looks like it may do it for the PS2. We shall see, but as far as I'm concerned, as long as Squaresoft is still with Sony (and the fact that Sony has 19% of Square's stock helps the fact a little), PS2 will ALWAYS be a major console because it will lead in the Japanese makets. And most games do come from Japan, so there will be tons of titles that can be taken over here to the US.

Looks like ps2's total sales worldwide have hit the 20 million mark.That was sony's target.And the sales figure of the ps2 keeps going up.Looks like XBOX and GC will have a hard time catching up.

I REALLY,REALLY am curious to see how the XBOX does in japan at the febuary launch.

Um, no offense JHendrix but you have a few flaws in your analysis. The POS2 has been out for over a year in the U.S. (longer in Japan), and has a much greater selection of games than the two new consoles, but both of them have been out for ABOUT ONE MONTH. The PS2 may have done well this holiday season, but its the last one for them. As new games come out for GC and XB, PS2 game and console sales will begin to decline, its just a matter of time. Personally, I'm disgusted that Sony hyped their POS machine up so much, when in fact the hardware design is shit. 4MB VRAM is one example of piss poor design, and the PS2 came out AFTER the DC, which itself has 8MB VRAM!! Go figure!!

Anyway, I'll get a PS2 eventually, when they drop the price to under 200. It sure isn't worth $300, thats for sure. There are certainly some good games for it, but overall as a "next gen" system, its a disappointment. Sony f'd up the hardward design bigtime, which is why they're already talking about "PS3" . . . maybe next time they'll get it right!! <IMG SRC="smilies/eek2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/eek2.gif" border="0">

uhm.. the psx mods need exactly as much soldering effort as the ps2 mods (4-8 wires). the external swap solutions were never big for psx, almost anyone has a modchip. ps2 piracy is at least as big as psx piracy over here, and I doubt it's much different elsewhere.

Technically, Gamecube is the only "real" console out there. XBox is basically a low-end PC, and PS2 doesn't even call themselves a console; they call themselves a "computer entertainment system." (sort of reminds me of the term "graphic novel" <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> for comic books)

And as for the "Square addiction," yes, many units were bought, but how many were returned? <IMG SRC="smilies/smirk.gif" border="0"> FFVIII was a piece of crap. The characters were totally uninteresting, the main character was an apathetic jackass (when will they make a game that lets you take a baseball bat to whiny goth bastards to give them something to whine about?), and they relied all too much on the CG graphics. This has become all too much of a problem with Square games as of late. They could easily get it down to 1 CD if they got rid of the useless summon graphics and 3D rendered cinemas. I think the next FF should be in 2D graphics, but that's just me. (say what you will about a step backward, but I enjoyed BOFII more than I did FFVII, and BOFII was pure 2D).

Personally, I think games went downhill with the introduction of CD's. Back in the day of cartridges, when it was expensive and space was limited to make games, people had to make their games good. I call for a gaming counterrevolution. Bring back 2D and cartridges. And yes, I am deadly fucking serious about this. <IMG SRC="smilies/annoyed.gif" border="0">

FF8 blew hairy goat balls! I still have vivid, horrible flashbacks of endless GFs. I got to the third disc and had a mental breakdown. The game discs now serve as excellent coasters. FF7, now thats a different matter...

I am also fortunate enough to own all 4 next-gen consoles, DC, PS2, GC, and Xbox. Right now thanks to FF10 my favorite next-gen console is the PS2. Tommorow I might be craving some Halo so Xbox would be my current fav. A week from now Rogue Leader could be calling my name making GC the flavor of the day. I have no permanent favorite console (except for Neo and Duo), only favorite games.

Being that I have no real favorite system, I could care less about system sales. As long as I'm happy I don't care if I'm the only one who bought the damn thing. Fuck man, Road Rash for my 3DO still rules!

I don't think that this is a stupid topic. Keeping track of the video game wars is just like checking out what movies are taking in a shit load of cash at the box office. It's not like it really matters but it's cool to see who's on top! It's also helpful for people who don't feel like buying all the systems. The winner will most likely attract the most game developers which in turn should (key word being should) crank out the best games. Now this is rarely ever the case but in theory the console with the largest user base could make the most money and in turn would attract the most talented. I have GC and PS2 and have played X-Box extensivly, and PS2, by far, is the best one. The GC is awsome and the X-Box is good, but PS2 is just doing the best with their new games.

so far none of the new systems have really amazed me. The games are great I dont know what it is but nothing really makes me have to buy the systems. I played GC and it was pretty good, but the only game I played was Luigi's mansion and it got boring real fast. Xbox, I hate it.
