I want to buy a gift for my gf - an MP3 player. Preferably under $200, or in the range of.

I'm sure some of you can give me educated feedback on which to purchase.

I have been thinking of picking one up recently also. I think the way to figure it out , is what will it be used for ?

Ok for me it would be used for my time spent in the gym , so by that logic I really dont need more than say an hour of storage , so Im thinking about a Diamond Rio 500 off of ebay , they are a really good quality player and you can get them with 64 or 128 megs of ram in them [and its still upgradeable memory wise if you need more ?] for around $50.00 brand new in the package.

Im not too sure I like the new ones that are usb sticks. espicially when you look at the amount of storage per price , the older one looks like a better deal to me.

I have used a freiends 500 in the past and the sound is top notch and it is very easy to use.

If you need more storage than say 128 megs then I would look to a hard drive based player , but they start over $200.00 , and for me they are way too big and I really dont need 5 gigs of music on my hip.

I say look at the older Diamond Rio 500's they really are one of the best MP3 players to come out , and now they are an even better option since they can be had for such a low price.

I totally agree. I picked up a slightly used 5Gb iPod on eBay for $200 and it is well worth every penny. I use the Xplay software on Windows and it's easy and clean.

The iPod is one of the sexiest pieces of electronics out today. If you don't buy her one you don't love her.

Oh, and tattoo her name on your ass.

I have a 10 GB Nomad Jukebox. It's really cool, but since it's 10GB of stuff, browsing through it can take some time. Maybe a Nomad Jukebox 3? They supposedly fixed a lot of the probs with this release. Of course, the price may not be right. I already have my 10GB so I never saw pricing for the Jukebox 3.

I agree those things are freaking awesome, it's the only Apple product I've ever bought, and it was definitely worth it. :D

I got MC3 Kodak on eBay, & if your gf likes cool looking toys, she may like this one. Think of it as a swiss army knife, or jack of all trades, but master on none (though it's MP3 feature is really nice). It takes digital photos (decent, though not good on any standards at 640x480, 24-bit color), videos on 320x240 at 20 FPS, or at 10 FPS, & even play MP3 pro, which I think is cool. I got it for less than $60, shipped, from Kodak--the trick is to get it w/ low CF card (mine came w/ 2 10 MB cards), so it's cheaper, & you can always get one of the larger megs on internet. Granted, it was refurbished, but I think it's a great deal. You may find similar deals on eBay. It's really easy to transfer your work, & download mp3s on the computer, & w/ optional tv cable, you can even see them on the big screen.

Agreed, except you should be using that iPod on a Mac.

I mean, come on man.. You're making Steve Jobs cry.

For Christ's sake, using an iPod on a PC is like playing Sega games on an Xbox instead of a DC (you paying attention, Drift?)

You can use an iPod on a PC, but it just feels wrong.. It feels.. I dunno.. Dirty..

Get a minidisc player! I got mine complete and refurbished for $55, and the discs are cheap as ****, not to mention you don't have to erase your memory then transfer songs to get a new mix. Plusm you can use it to record stuff like a cassette player, what MP3 player does that? Also, with that MDLP technology out, you can fit TONS of songs with little compression on one MD (sony claims 4 CDscan fit on one MD with this technology), or be ghetto like me and record in mono and fit double the amount on one MD (and play it in double speed, and listen to it in half the time).

Still, it ISN'T solid state, and if you jog/whatever, you'd need a really good one with good antishock in order to have skip-free music. And that Camera deelie makes my MD player cry if it's really as good as it sounds.
