I just returned my 3rd or 4th PS2 in 2 years. I had the original release on the 10-26-00, crapped out on me like 4 months later. Wouldn't read DVD games and had major problems with DVD movies (that's when I bought a real DVD player). Next time, it read DVD games extremely slow and was intermitently not reading my memory cards. Last night I picked up Dynasty Tactics and the motherfucker wouldn't read the disc. Thought it was the disc, so I dropped in Dynasty Warriors 3... blasphemy of all blasphemy it wouldn't read THAT disc either, and I KNOW that one used to work since I play the shit out of it.

I treat my systems like solid gold. I use compressed air to keep dust out of the insides. I use compressed air on the power supply to keep dust out of it (ALL while it's unplugged, thank you). I even run DVD lense cleaners through it every once in a while.

I had a 30000 model, a 30001R and now I have a 39001R or something like that.

Sony may make quality home electronics, but their video game systems suck ass. My extended warranty runs out in October, so the next time it happens, and I know it will, I'll have to PAY for another if I don't want my PS2/PSX game purchases to be for noithing. Hopefully it'll drop to $150-$100 before then though.

as wierd as this may sound the dvd cleaner actually dosen't help. My friend used it when his system was giving problems and it did nothing. and you're not supposed to blow dust out of it you're supposed to use a vaccum to suck it out. I'm sure this is just a straight sony bashing tread and I wonder why I even listen, but my ps2 was bought two years ago in march and still works to this day. maybe you're doing unneccessary stuff that you think may be good for it but is actually hurting it. it's a very odd system indeed! :p

I bought one shortly after launch day, and it too is still working fine to this day. I also bought the GT3 Edition PS2 last year and it worked fine until I sold it because I needed the $$$.

I've worked as an IT "professional" for 6 years now, and on just about every component I've cleaned, I've used compressed air in some form or another. The only time a vaccuum is really required is when someone sets the PC on the floor, the carpetted floor, smokes alot and has a hairy dog. Blowing air over components is no better or worse than "sucking" on components. I've never fried any PC, or piece of PC equipment, using compressed air. The PS2 isn't really that much different from a PC.

Yes, I'm bashing SONY, not the PS2 per se. I have a lot of games on the PS2 that I really enjoy, and am looking forward to a bunch of games, I just Sony would quality test their shit a little better.

Rumor has it that they tested the original PSX in a situation they thought it would likely be used... 2-5 Hrs... a WEEK. There were days I was putting in 8 hours a DAY playing that shit. Maybe people don't play their shit as much as I do? I don't know.

i hear alot of people say about this, maybe i'm just lucky with my playstations i've had my PSX since they were first released and it still works perfectly, so do all the pads etc. I've had my PS2 9 months now and it still works like new. The only problem i do have is that with certain dvds it'll come up "unable to read disk" half way through, this happens to some of my mates dvds though as well the PS2 must be unable to read certain types of dvds.

GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE WITH YOUR PS2 ;)

I kept my launch day PS2 for a year and it was still working when I sold it. However, one of the controllers broke after about 3 months, and it was my second controller, so it was hardly ever used.

All of my friends and relatives who owned the original PlayStation (roughly 10 people) either had theirs die completely and they had to replace it, or it stopped reading discs properly but they didn't bother replacing it because they stopped using it. I don't know anyone with a PlayStation that works properly right now (including me).

Sony may design some amazing stuff, but their build quality sucks.

Add one more to my running tally. I tried playing a DVD game, several actually, and what do you know, brand new out of the box it wouldn't read DVD games. I took it back... again, and finally got one that works. Here's to a longer than 3 month life!

This may sound a bit odd, but could all of the PS2's problems be caused by excessive use? Even if you treat your system like gold, playing it excessively could easily damage it. As with all CD based systems, it's best to give it a break every 2 or so hours. Again, I'm not saying this is the problem, but it might be a possibility.

Pure BS. My PS2 has been on overnight a lot over the past 10 months. Still works fine, but I fear for its life after reading this thread.

I still have a 100% working PS2 from LAUNCH. Don't know if you people know how to take care of your stuff or not but mine, and all the PS2's my friends have are all fine.

Peace

Some people love exaggerating thier problems with the PS2.I too have owned it for 2 years and have yet to experience a single problem.I clean the ps2's lens every month.
People here love bashing the PS2 without coming up with a solid proof as to why it sucks which it doesn't.PS2's hardware is very good except for its VRAM which is now not even a problem anymore with high profile developers such as capcom or namco.

I just had a friend who owns a PS2 get into a situation where his PS2 just all the sudden stopped reading Guilty Gear X and 95% of his DVD's he owned. If you can beleive this one, Sony told him to send it to them, along with I think $65, and they upgraded his BIOS or something like that. Not sure exactly what was done to it, as I didn't open it up to see......

I don't own a PS2, nor do I really want one. I've owned my PS 1 for 4 years now and haven't had any problems with it yet. (Knocks on wood) It must be the ones that didn't get checked on the assembly line that you guys are having problems with......???

Good luck! :)

Bill :D

There is truth to what the PS2 naysayers are saying altough alot of people may exaggerate it. Sony is kinda shoddy when it comes to quality products. My PSX just sucks, 1 controller malfuncioned not long after I bought it and doesn't work and my spindle hub snapped in half. However my both my PS2's(i have a JAP and NA one) are still running strong.

I don't doubt that they make every other few items of their hardware malfunction on purpose so people will have to buy another. Other companies do it so i know Sony probably does it.

I hope and pray to God both my PS2's aren't time bombs just waiting to malfunction.

I go along with everything that guy from Capcom said. The only difference is i love my PS2's.

I don't think I am over exaggerating my problems with the PS2, I legitamitely have had 4 PS2s die in just under 2 years. Not totally die, but refuse to read DVD games. As far as I am concerned, the quality of the manufacture of PS2s, and any Sony VG system in general, is shit.

I don't think the PS2 GAMES suck, as I own a ton of games for both PS2 and PSX. Just the manufacturing "quality".

Well they're cranking millions of these things out. So its certainly possible to have a few bad ones. My cousin bought one 2 yrs ago and it works fine. I got mine in may and its still ok.

Ok I'll stick up for Sony's true colors. I have had min for almost 2 years only one small problem. My PS2 was a DVD player replacement for about 3 months a while back and A couple of new DVD's right out of the box (Kiss of the Dragon and Bounce <for my wife&gt ;) would glitch up a bit pixilate and then jusmp like 4 chapers. I thought that it was a bad batch of DVD's so I returned it to get a new DVD. It happan again. COuldent figure it out. I waited untill a possible new shipment of DVD of Kiss of the Dragon came to Best buy (about 1.5 weeks) Returned it again and the same problem. I brought the thing to my neighabors house and the disk worked like a charm  Well that convinced me that I needed to replace my broken DVD player quick. So far it has happen on those 2 movies (I have over 250 but only watched like 20 in that time span). Now a bit later on I bought an XBox and just to check the DVD's ran fine on the XBox. That is the only problem with my PS2 (besides new games that lure my interest). It is far from a Great Product, but about the same distance from a Really Crap product.
