Well, here I was, about to sit down to a nice, VERTICAL (thanks to my rotatable flat panel) game of Ikaruga, but it appears that the version of the "Utopia" boot disc I have burned to a CD is a worthless piece of trash that won't support the VGA box! How the hell am I supposed to play this game on my flat panel? Is there an UPDATED version of the utopia disc that supports VGA? If so, I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could direct me to somewhere I can download said disc...

It's a VGA issue. I'm sure it would work if I tried playing on my TV set, but the VGA box won't run with this version of the Utopia boot disc. I've had this boot disc for a LONG time.

Most of the VGA boxes won't boot up this way without some trickery. Which do you have?

The one I use is perfect, bought it here:

You might get it to work with a DC-X. Only other alternative - get the DC modded.

Sorry to paint a bleak picture, but any of the above won't cost you all that much anyway.

I have the official Sega VGA box that you could only get through direct order. Who still does DC mods?

There is a VGA patch for Utopia I hear, talk to Daisuke Jigen perhaps, he was chasing that leprechaun a few days ago, maybe he caught something.

But this is exactly why I bought my DC-X in the first place. I used to be a Utopia user...'what's the difference?' I thought. Then I found out no VGA box.

I was lucky to find a DC-X, I really haven't seen one since but check your mall. Gamespot's and Funcolands they might have some in stock.

There's your answers. ;)

Umm... Request someone on the board with references to mod your DC, I don't know who still does them. Maybe NCS...

Basically, I'd do one of two things.
1) Get a DC-X
2) Mod the dreamcast and forget the boot disc issue.

Hope that helps a little at least.

For what it's worth, I use a modded DC with the Treamcast VGA box in my vehicle with a 17" flatscreen. SOOOOO cool.

With DC-X you can just hit the Start or A button before you switch disks and a menu comes up that lets you set it to whatever mode/input you want (a must since some Euro games like Rez don't automatically do this for me). Any other method involves some kind of trickery. Basically do what Kyo 2000 says.

Definately the best option would be getting a DC-X, but they are hard to find.

About the utopia boot discs, here you have some of them:

There's a vga patch, but I never tried it, so do it a t your own risk. I have a vga box but I prefer my TV.

FYI, if you mod a 50Hz Euro/JPN DC (I've seen some PAL(?) JPN DCs) with a boot-/mod chip, some versions don't boot in 60Hz. I have a friend who modded his DC with a five (four?) wire mod chip, and my JPN imports such as KoF2k, MotW or Zero Gunner 2 run in sucky-blah 50Hz on his chipped box.

That's why I recommend not to do a mod but to use a good ole' DC-X. Supports all connectors (s-video, rgb, vga, antenna) and has a PAL/NTSC select.

DL...If you end up deciding to mod your DC, I would suggest you install the chip yourself. It is very very easy to do.

Gamesharks...including the cheap-o Gameshark Lites allow you to boot imports in VGA mode.

Well, I found an EB that has one DC-X in stock, and I'm going to pick it up later today. I tried various "VGA patched" versions of the Utopia boot disc (wasted two CDRs trying them) last night to no avail.

I gave up with the Utopia boot disk and got my system modded in order to play imports on a VGA monitor. You can use the Utopia boot disk with a VGA box but it's a pain.

1) Unplug VGA box and boot up Dreamcast with the Utopia disk.
2) Wait a minute and swap disks with the game you want to play.
3) Give the game time to boot up and plug VGA box back in.

The DC-X did the trick! And now, I've got to get back to Ikaruga. Damn, this game is INTENSE! I'm diggin' it, and glad that I can play it in true vertical mode on this Lcd
