Got a question for all you PS2 owners out there.

Hey all, I was just wondering if your DVD games (MGS2, GTA3, GT3, etc.) get that blurry shit on them after being played for awhile. All of mine do, and the funny thing is the blue bottom CD's don't get anything on them.

I wonder if this is related to a cooling problem? Although if the console isn't getting enough air you'd think it would effect the hardware rather than the discs.

Do you have your PS2 upright or lying on its base? I hear some people have had trouble loading discs in the upright position, although I suspect this will be better for cooling your PS2 down. I just hope it never gets to the DC situation where the console just wont work after a few years or keeps resetting itself. Why does this happen to consoles? More to the point, why does this never happen to me? I've not had a single problem with any console I've ever owned. Lucky I guess <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Well, I have the console laying on it's side. As for having problems with game systems, I've always had at least one problem with each game system I've had ever since the PSX. Anyway, I've heard that the laser runs a lot hotter when accessing a DVD game. That is the only thing I can think of that would cause the blurry shit build-up on my games.

what about the heat of the laser contacting fingerprint oil?

As for system overheating, if you know how much dust can enter a computer after a few months, I would figure the DC is also vulnerable, and that enough dust in a fan will hinder the fan. My Gamecube came with the fan slightly jammed, so the fan wouldn't run at tpo speed, thus my system reset after 20 minutes of gameplay (within 1 if it had just reset). After opening the fan and resituating it, it worked fine for long periods of time. I'm sure the DC is similar.

I tend to keep my games in immaculate condition, so there really are no fingerprints on the discs. However the blurry stuff tends to look like some sort of oily residue.

That sounds like something is overheating and smoke is depositing a residue on the disk?

There's just no way a laser could physically transfer any substance onto the disk.
Unless it was a powerful laser and it was scorching the surface.

Does the residue wipe off?
Is there a smell?

I think the most important thing to ask here is: Do you smoke? You can get a buildup kinda like this on the inside of your car if you do.

Nope, I don't smoke and I don't smell anything when my PS2 is on. I'm not the only one who has this problem either. At least two or three of my buddies have it too.

Actually my PS2 games seem to get somewhat cloudy looking after playing them for a few hours. I thought I was the only one but seems to be dust. I would try to wipe one off, it should be easy. It seems like of a cloudy milky look right?

Yup that's exactly what I'm talking about. I figured it was dust too, but when canned air wouldn't blow it off I was dumbfounded. Looks like I'll have to try wiping them off.

I rented a PS2 game with something similar to this. I thought someone had just spilled milk on it or something.

It seems to be a mystery...

Yet another reason I wouldn't bother watching DVDs on a PS2.

I'm just guessing here, but based on your description it seems as if you're getting a grease-like substance on the discs, since compressed air won't blow it off. Maybe when your system's drive spins up, it is flinging some amount of lubricating material/grease off of the laser assembly (which has lubricant put on it at the factory) and onto your game discs. Maybe the drive was over-lubed at the factory and this is the result of it. There could also be an overheating factor involved in this problem too. Please allow me to restate that I'm just making a totally wild, unfounded guess about this...
