Hi,
I'm shopping around for a Neo Geo, and came to realize that this stuff is Eeeexpensive. No wonder Neo Geo owners are in a class by themselves. Nonetheless, to prevent me being killed by my parents, I would like to not blast all my money and know the five most important games for the Neo Geo. I already came up of a list of my own. They are: Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug X, Last Blade 2, MOTW (even though I still don't know what type of game this is!), and KOF 2000. These are in no particular order, though I am leaning more towards Metal slug X as being the most must have.

Samurai Shodown 2

The Last Blade
Metal Slug X (though 3 is close)
KOF98

These are GREAT games, and will be easier on your wallet except for Mark of the Wolves

I'll do it by category, and limit that to five. The prices are from personal experience only.

Action: Metal Slug 3 ($350) (I would say part 1, but....) or Magician Lord ($30~$40)
Shooting: Alpha Mission II or Aero Fighters 2 (both about $40~$65)
Fighting: Fatal Fury Special ($35), Real Bout Fatal Fury ($100), Samurai Shodown ($30) or any King of Fighters ($100~$220) (maybe '99)
Puzzle: Magical Drop 3 ($220)
Sports: Street Hoop ($70~$100)

It all depends on what types of games you like, and how much you have to spend. Kowing that would make recommendations easier, but have fun with whatever you get.

And Garou: Mark of the Wolves is a fighting game, the eighth installment of the Fatal Fury series. Ultra-rare, it will break your bank account. Not many sell for more than this game.

I'd recommend...

Pulstar, Blazing Star, Neo Turf Masters, Metal Slug, and Metal Slug 3.

Let me tell ya, Metal Slug X is very similar to 3 with 3 being better. I'd eliminate Slug X and just leave Slug 3. I would agree, KoF2000 is a must get along with MOTW(The last Fatal Fury fighting game) Last Blade 2 is also a good game but not on the top of my list. As for cheaper, easier to get games, I would highly recommend Samurai Showdown 2, earlier KoF games and Art of Fighting 2. Im sure you'll have a good time with most any Neo game, but make sure you reserve a KOF2000, and I mean NOW. Like stop posting and go reserve one. See if NCSX.com will still let ya. Oh yeah, and DONT BUY ANYTHING FROM BUYRITE.NET. You've been warned

Metal Slug X would definitely be the "cheapest
game" from your top 5.

My current top 5 are (have to make it short

):

Blazing Star, Real Bout Fatal Fury, Magical Drop 3, King Of fighters 96, and Last Blade.

As for the MOTW. I don't know if I am spoiled or not, but it's not that fun as it used to be-I beat it too death. I end up playing Real Bout and KOF series more.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. They're much appreciated. Thanks especially goes to gargoyle7 for the professionally written reviews of Neo Geo games-honestly thought that they were better than the high profile game magazines like GameFan. I forgot to mention that I have some ports of the Neo Geo games on Saturn and DC. So instead of being redundant(w/ Real Bout collection, Samurai Spirits Collection, Metal Slug, KoF 97, and Dreammatch 99), I decided to get Metal Slug 2, X, and KoF 99 for now. I might get Samurai Spirits 2 from NCS as well, but it's in japanese. I will definitely collect more in the future (esp. Last Blade 1 and 2, MOTW, and KoF series.)

I just wanted to make sure you realize that Metal Slug X is essentially the same game as Metal Slug 2. It has some minor differences, but if you're trying to best spend your dollars, grab X and skip 2. Also, SS2 being Japanese isn't a problem as long as you have an English console. Neo carts language defaults to the unit they're playing on.

Even though I'm not a great fan of '99 yet a fanatic of '94, you really ought to buy up the KoF or any series chronologically. For two reasons. 1)They're cheaper the earlier into the series you get 2)It makes a big difference if you go through it in the proper order, and experience the storyline the way it was meant to be. Believe me, when you beat '97 without having a clue as to what's happened in the two years prior to that, it's not going to mean anything to you. Plus you get to see the evolution of the series as well as characters over the years, which is kind of a nice thing. But that's just an opinion, so treat it as such.

When buying Neo games...go with what you like...remember, the games are not cheap. You should buy one BIG game like "Mark of the Wolves" then, you should get a older game like say for instance....oh I don't know...Aero Fighters...

I gotta say my top 5 must have games are, in this order.

KOF98
KOF95
Last Blade 1
Fatal Fury Special
Samurai Showdown 2

then insert favorite metal slug game. That collection isnt to expensive, and is some of the best fighters on the planet...as well as action games.

My five best Neo games in no particular order:
Metal Slug 3
Metal Slug X
KOF99
KOF98
Garou:MOTW

I think Metal Slug 1 is a better game than MS3, but it just isn't an option for most Neo fans.MS3 is a good second in the Metal Slug series.
