Foam on the underside - what does it protect?

Hi everybody

There is a square piece of foam on the underside of all the MVS motherboards I have seen so far (underneath the place where the battery is). I have to remove it at least partially to replace the battery.

Since I'm an electronics-noob I have some questions: what is this foam good for? Is it some sort of shielding? Could I remove it completely? Or could I remove it temporarily and reattach it after modding the board? Would it be ok to reattach it with hot glue?

You can remove it as in the long run it will just destroy the underside much like the battery lol...it gets all crusty and such
