Why do we call it the "AES"

This name feels kind of forced to me, never really been as official as say the MVS which is proper SNK branding..

What got me thinking this was the other day I glanced at the box of my MV-1A motherboard.. and low and beyold, there was the neo geo logo with the words "advanced entertainment system"

Ok I get it we need to have a way to differentiate the two formats.. but it seems weird calling the home system AES when the arcade format is also stamped with the same branding..

Am I overthinking this? :hammer:

Yes I got bored at work again..

So the phrase started from Dion of NGF?

Overthinking it maybe.. but the fact remains that both AES is MVS and vice versa! :p

B2 in that faq is the main reason I only refer to it as the home system.

If you ever have any Neo history questions just make a thread and wait for chris to show up, he will explain to you that everything we know about the system comes from him and dion.

We call it AES because NGF called it AES. I think...

People call it AES because it is widely accepted to mean the home carts now. Yes, Dion can take credit for calling the games AES. The term Advanced Entertainment System was written on the home system boxes and on the home system itself, so the acronym made sense.

Dion didn't coin shit, AES was always there on the system, people always called it that.
Nintendo had the NES, SNK had the AES...just felt right.

I thought the home system manual had "AES" on them... Not sure. It's been forever since I've looked at one.

"Advanced Entertainment System" (adapted from Nintendo's (S)NES) is just a subtitle to the MVS and homecart system that was never meant to be used as a descriptive term for the home machine. Eventually, some clueless/lazy folks started using it (among them the NGF lads) and there we are now.

I don't have an AES, I have a homecart system, btw. :smirk:

Yes, it's kinda anal to talk about it, but no, I don't give a damn! :D

Super-noob question: but what does AEC represent as an acronym for then? As I know you can get a hold of AEC systems and AEC Sticks. I realise the items within the packaging are (as far as I know) identical to the standard counterparts i.e. AES system and stick, but just being inquisitive...

Just an observation, but after looking through the Neo Geo home console manual after reading JMKurtz's post, I saw that it says "NEO-AEC" under "Model Number & Name." So perhaps AEC is a more fitting acronym for the home console.

IIRC, "AEC" refers to a Neo set made for Europe and/or the US while "Neo-0" is the model-no. for Japanese machines.

I may be wrong here, though.

Yes, we play NEO-AEP on our NEO AES.
Or we just play our home carts on our home system.

And yes, NEO AES is printed on the home system instruction manuals from 1990. (and the 1989 proofs) ... ... ... ... Flame proof suit is now on... ...

The term AES was coined by SNK in 1989. If you saw the print stuff David posted one of them was for the AES manual and the footer said AES on it.

Brings a smile to my face to see Tak and Charlie posting in this thread because I swear it feels like every time one of these threads pops up they say the same thing I do: always called it a home cart, and as such it will always remain.
