View Full Version : Neogeo Homebrew Time's UP

Hi,

A little message to share our little neogeo homebrew game.
We tried to pay homage to our gaming past.
Orginally the game has been made to be played in player versus player but at the end of the dev cycle, we added a story mode, a scoring system with 3 difficulty levels.

Please consider it, as a little homebrew made by 3 guys:
- amigatari for the sprites
- max330mega for the musics
- and myself for the code.
We don't have NG: DEV Team skills yet neither for the coding parts nor for the hardware part.
But we will try to do better for the next projects.

We used Neobitz's great tools and after maybe one(two?) hundred emails later(sorry Jeff ;)), we finally finished the game. We also released some cartridges and 100CDs.

Something important for us: No MVS cartrigdes Were Harmed :)
We have a few "blank" MVS around 4 or 5. We can sell some CDs.

Here are some pics and a little video:

SNK's coding was green when they first started BUT their sprites and art / illustrations made up for what was lacking under the hood.
We can go all the way back to Atari 2600.The illustration on the cover and label of the cart was the HYPE even though the games really didn't have much to them. Bring it on the level of NEO GEO, Ganryu is a game that comes to mind.

I would like to understand the opening title and the NGF graphics in-game.

NGF has not had anything to do with this game, and it is an interesting choice of lettering and wording.

My preference would be a disclaimer in the paperwork and game regarding the game having no affiliation with NGF.

I think the game concept is a good one though, and as time goes on, the level of graphics will continue to improve for these homebrew games. Nice effort.

thanks for the replies :)

I forgot to explain where the game came from:
"NGF" is for "Neo Geo Fans", a french forum http://www.neogeofans.com/leforum/. It is not "NeoGeoFreak" I should start with that, sorry.
Someone asked in 2010 on neogeofans (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=fr&sl=fr&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.neogeofans.com%2Fleforum%2Fshow thread.php%3Ft%3D38811)(NGF for french users) if it was possible to make a hombrew on neogeo and 6 months later I finished Neopang(the ostrich pang ^^) alone. Two years later with Amigatari and Max330mega on the same forum we finished Time's UP.

For the price:
We sell the CD 15 + shipping cost(maybe 9 depending on the destination)
The MVS is 100 + shipping cost

the MVS Kit contains :
- The MVS cartridge
- The MVS carton box
- an additional MVS cartridge sticker
- a sticker for the carton box
- the mini-marquee
- the flyer
- the insert (for shockbox)
As an example shipping cost is high : 30 france->US.

We can't make AES anymore as we don't want to kill cartridges. We asked people for dead cartridges and to the guys how made conversion to give/sell us their old MVS pcb. This is how we managed not to kill some cartridges.

Yep, time to start working on an Outrunners or Turbo Outrun style game. I'm going to start rallying some troops. The future is now and stuff like that. Not sure about the air-jets, though... Irritating Outrun sounds cool, but probably not a huge market for it.

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised! I have never been interested very much in homebrew games (for any system really) but this game really impressed me. It actually feels like a 100% complete game, where as most home brews feel incomplete like only a partial game.

The graphics and sounds are really well put together, I love the music, and the theme of the game is very unique and a wonderful idea! I did see how some of the elements used, and the general genre of the game resembles a combination of Captain Tomaday & Twinkle Star Sprites, but it absolutely stands on its own as it is very original.

Congratulations to your design team, and everyone else who helped on this project, you guys did a great job and mae a really fun game. Also thanks to Jeff for all his contributions to the homebrew scene. I will absolutely be ordering an MVS cartridge of this game!

No offence to NGF but this game is no where near what NGDEV does. Even they have admitted that.

I think the concept is great and rather impressive, I assumed you probably used PROG and CHA256 boards like PANG for this title when making the MVS carts. right?

My concern is the material used (not the hardware), but the choice of characters, etc., I would have preferred something that is "cute" to have a more sensible enemy/purpose, or to go all "future-like" and do a typical shoot'em up.

But over-all congrats guys/girls ;), if there are any.

I've sent the tracking informations to everyone and answered to all PMs

Concerning the gift thing, I'm sorry I didn't understand the real problem.
I asked this because there's no fees in france that way neither for seller nor the buyer. Maybe it is different in other countries.
Someone took time to explain the problem to me: I could take the money and send nothing or just disappear.
And as it is a gift there are no possibilities to have your money back in case of problem.
I won't ask/accept gift anymore, I understand the risk.
For those who have already paid that way, if there's a problem with the cartridge I won't disappear :)
For example the 10 first cartridges has a sound bug because the MVS hasn't been tested on a real MVS slot but on an AES+MVS ConverterII, bad idea.
I bought a MVS slot, I recall the 10 cartridges, fix them and resend them, I paid the shipping cost for the return and the re-send.

For the comparison with NG: Dev Team, I have no problem with that, we know that we are not at their level but we are still proud of our little game. It is my second game and only our 1st game as a team.
We tested it in PvP many times and what makes us really proud of it, is that the game is fun. Put the game in your arcade cabinet, ask a friend to play against you, I bet you'll smile :)

Yes I did before I opened this thread. I sold them even before we finished the game. On these 10 AES I managed to kill only 5 AES witch is still too much. I won't use sac cart anymore, it's my choice, I won't change my mind.
Concerning sending the ROMS files/chips, I can't just send them. I know someone will dump the game and share it one day, but it is not fair for those who bought the game.
It is not a problem of earning more money by making more cartridges, it's a small game, we planed to release a few cartridges, we sold them, that's it.

I know at least 3 persons/firms who work on MVS/AES PCBs. If there's a possibility to put our game on them, why not.

Dude,
If they only had like a dozen carts made and sent out, and the rom is already available, then they really need to look at the pool of initial buyers that had the privilege of pre-buying the carts before everybody. If they were mostly close friends and good contacts, wow, better recheck your list and rethink your friends.

Very sad indeed.

EDIT: The home cart box they made for the game has an insert that says 80 megs, but the rom set on that site totals to 114 megs.

The availability of a rom isn't gonna slow down purchases of physical copies.. look how active the neo selling forum is.

It's been finished since November 2012, redarmor.net (linked in CeL's sig) is in French so, I'm probably not the only person who hasn't heard of its completion until now. I'd like a copy on MVS & in the mean while I will try to load the rom.

Maybe among the regular crowd of collectors and gamers, your right.
And even among the do it yourself guys, it might also not matter IF there were physical cartridges available to purchase.

However that is the problem, there are no cartridges available to purchase. It's a bad combination. No carts available to buy, but the rom is freely available.
Those individuals will now just build their own carts rather then buy one. (hell they cannot even buy one if they wanted to as it is "Sold out"! lol)
So people will now just build their own cart as a result of that, so how can you say this does not slow down the purchases? Hell the purchases are over for that matter.

CeL,
Any way to make game tougher for player 1 or 2? To make game harder for better player in vs. mode.

Game is a bunch of fun with two players.

The roms available on my web site is a demo released in august.
The demo contains 2 characters and the complete first stage for both single and versus mode. Of course I can't share the roms and sell the cartridges, it doesn't make sens. Again the most important to me is that the guy who paid 100€ his MVS Kit + extremly high shipping cost does't think he could have made it himsef.

Here is a google translation of the demo page. (http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fredarmor.net%2Fpost%2F2012%2F08%2F3 0%2FNEO%25C2%25B7GEO-Time-s-UP-Teaser-Demo)
For those who will test the demo, keep in mind that it is not the final gameplay, for example, there is no chain/scoring system in single and no bonus keeping in versus.

Hey thanks for the feedback, you mean one difficulty level for player 1 and another one for player 2? No we didn't make it, we didn't even think of it, the difficulty level is for both payer 1 and 2. It could be a good idea.

CeL,
How does FAST and SLOW work? Do you have to collect all letters in the word or just a single letter?

It seems like all the payers have similar capabilities, does that sound right? Any variance in them, such as one getting more no blocks, and another getting more shields?

single letter makes FAST (your character) or SLOW (enemy).

I got to end on Kids level :)

Game is simple, but fun. My wife wanted to play it again tonight. I can't say that for many video games.

Idea is to shoot bad guys and not get hit or run into boxes/floppy disc/etc, else you lose a heart - lose 6 hearts and game is over. You can get hearts and power ups along the way.

In single player mode after awhile you go to new level with different video game themes. After 4 or 5 levels you win game.

Demo really represents the game, so use that to judge if you should buy it.

Kids level is really easy :)
Yes, the FAST increase you speed and SLOW slow down your opponent is VS mode and give you more points in solo mode.
That capabilities are the same but hit box change.
So if you finish the game in "NGF" mode with the neogeoCD ship then you beat the game in the hardest mode. It won't be easy but it is possible.

In versus mode, each time the game loop the enemies have more and more lives.
The best we managed to reach is loop 5.

just out of curiosity, would any of these homebrew mvs carts work with a daedalus?

From the teaser video i can say it reminds me of the old shoot em up construction kit on Comodore 64 and Amiga.
You could do the same kind of game with it. It was kinda easy but the gaphics where kinda hard if you not so talented with computer graphics.
Anyway still looks very nice, if the graphics improve more they could actually sell the next games for big money.
Anyway awesome work to the creators !

We have no more AES/MVS.

We made :
- 10 AES
- 20 MVS
- 100 CD

We still have ~= 50 CD

Cel-

I just watched your video of the game again and damn man, you guys should really make some more MVS copies! Have you seen shadowkn55's post about new MVS cart shells:

http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?242810-Omega-MVS-Cartridge-Shells-Kickstarter-Now-Live!

Your game would look great in one of these, not to mention the fact that you would make a ton of us that missed it extremely happy. I'm sure you got plenty of requests (I know I sent one) for extra copies.

I'm sure if you made a post asking for people's interest in another MVS run you'd get a pretty good idea of how many more copies you could sell.

I hope you consider it.
