I have been searching around for the metal slug 1st and second reviews, and everyone seems to agree that 2nd mission is great, but there seems to be mixed feelings about 1st mission. What do you guys think, and what are teh main differences between the two?

Both are great games, but MS2 is just...more! MS1 has a more linear structure, less missions, weapons, vehicles, characters, enemies, bosses...and well, you get the idea. But much like the MVS/AES versions, both are based around the same basic gameplay, so you're getting a f'sking good game either way.

They are both excellent, considering MS1 is generally cheaper it is a good place to start.

My advice, get the 1st Mission first, then if you like it, get the 2nd. 2nd just blows the first one right out of the water IMO. Better stages, weapons, vehicles, gameplay, and replay value out the ass! Both are must buys.

cool. very helpful information. i did go ahead and order the 1st mission basically because its the cheaper of the two. i played it once years ago in the arcade and liked it. hope i still do!

Second mission also has speech "PINEAPPLE" and the like!
Although most cool, this feature gives it that "authentic" MS2 slowdown every time it speaks!
Now you can turn off the speech if this pisses you off too much, but I kinda like it!

MS2 is the better game!
BUT not by a huge margin, sort of 9/10 for MS2 and 8/10 for MS1.
If you like MS, then start with the first one, and then treat yourself to the more expensive second one a bit later.

Pocket Metal Slug doesn't look much like it's full size counterpart, but does play with a similar feel, you can opt for blazing guns or stealth mode, the latter generally being more successful. The main difference is down to the number of enimies that the poor NGPC can draw before grinding to a halt, so you never see a mad onslaught of daft soldiers...

2nd mission was quite alot later, it only just got released in Europe and the states before SNK ditched the western market. There is bound to be less copies about and due to the more polished and fat nature of the game demand is higher. $60 is not so bad, Am i right in thinking that is what some poxy xbox game costs....? 2nd mission has more play in it than some dvd microsoft got the renderware wizard to make for them...

Just to clarify mate, MS3 is a full size neogeo game, and not available for neogeo pocket. There are 2 neogeo pocket incarnations of metal slug, which differ greatly from the arcade versions. The first one is kinda out on it's own in terms of storyline, and the second was developed alongside MS3 for the arcades so some parallels can be drawn.

Alas a third metal slug game never made it to the weeny screen before Nintendo’s 9inch purple stiletto cruelly pierced it dramatically spilling green goo everywhere...

And regarding full size metal slug, the first outing is by far the best, especially on CD with combat school and stuff...

They always try that cheap trick of sending soldiers in one after the other, like some Kung-fu flick. Never works though, you can just stand on the spot and knife the muthafckers...like lambs to the slaughter :D

It's a cool game, I think, with a great gameplay. The second one is awesome too, better then the first. But both are worth being purchased.

No idea... I wish I knew!

By the way, MS 2nd Mission can be had for only $35... Just get the calm shall re-release! Try www.videogamedepot.com, I think.

Or www.gexpress.com...

I think they're both good... But 2nd Mission seems a bit too un-Metal Slug-y at times... It is more platformy that 1st Mission, I think...

But the voices are great!

Both are definitely something to have in your NGPC library.

Metal Slug 1 is definitely a great game, but compared to Slug 2 seems kind of "first generation". (Not quite as much challenge and of course the lack of speech) Part 2 is a lot harder to find, and brings between 50 and 70 dollars when it even is on eBay, but I got lucky and got a flawless UK MS2 from Bugula amongst other games. (Great seller!) Definitely a must have for the NGPC collection!
