Is the US clamshell version of MOTM hard to find?

I know that many, including myself, consider this to be the best portable fighter ever made, but is it hard to find the US clamshell version. I've had my US clamshell copy since early 2001 and I must say that I'm very proud of it. Also, I'm pretty sure my copy is the US version since I bought it at an import store that only sales US/JAP games, but just out of curiosity, what's the difference between the US and UK clamshell versions?

US games doesn't come in the clamshell casing, only Euro and later japanese titles has them.

We Americans get stuck with crappy cardboard subsitutes.

Clamshells are strictly UK and Japanese only...

Love them, neverthelss.

US Launch titles got clam case versions.

I think MOTM was too late out to get US clam, it's probably Euro or Asian.

Even so, fairly valuable.

KaedesBlade is correct. Only UK and Japanese titles were released in the plastic clamshell cases. A few later titles overseas began seeing the price of cost cutting and later received cardboard towards the end of the NGPC life. All U.S. titles, including launch titles, were cardboard. I have collected and own all 30 US released games.

Therefore, the MOTM title you own is probably a UK release since it's in English. The import store you purchased it from probably imported those as well, but didn't mention anything about it since clamshells are cool and it's all in English anyway. Sucks we didn't get clamshells here.

Sorry GhostWalker, but the U.S. did have clamshell launch games. I know they are not Euro imports that SNK USA, eToys, and other places brought over, as the inserts, etc. are not the same, and some even have the ESRB on them.

Basically, everything from Dark Arms onwards was cardboard in the U.S.

Really? Cool. Wow, I didn't even know these existed. If they've got the ESRBs on 'em, then that explains it. Does anyone have cover box scans or have a list of exactly which titles, before Dark Arms afterwards, were released as claimshells? Looks like I'll have to hunt for 'em someday to add to my collection. Groovy!

Thanks for the info Bio.

Right off the top of my head, Fatal Fury: First Contact, King Of Fighters R-2, Samurai Showdown II, Bust-A-Move Pocket (Euro/Asian hardcase was Puzzle Bobble Pocket, and does not have ESRB printed on it like BAMP. Some of them were U.S. inserts but did not have ESRB's printed on them initially, but had a sticker slapped on later to appease the bastards that insist on rating everything.)

Also several of the gambling games, and I believe one or two of the sports games had a U.S. hardcase. I have a printout around here of SNK USA's order page from their website, which has all of the initial U.S. hardcase games listed, I will see if I can find it.

Cool. Thanks Bio. I'd love to have any listing. I can imagine that those particular titles are going to be rare as hell. I'm not sure if it's gonna be worth the hunt. I may like the system and own all the games in mint condition, but I don't think paying a shitload of money is gonna be worth it.

The launch games for NGPC I have listed for July '99 were:

Baseball Stars
Bust a move pocket
fatal fury: first contact
king of fighters R-2
metal slug: 1st mission
Samurai shodown 2

Perhaps all these and a couple others after launch were the claimshell orignal releases? Lemme know if you find that SNK list. Thanks man.

Oops, I forgot to write down Metal Slug: First Mission. Got a U.S. launch copy of that as well.

On a related note, there will soon be an NGPC game photo gallery on the site, and I will be putting up what pictures I have of the U.S. clamshells. I am trying to figure out how to break it down, will probably have photos of U.S. releases, Euro/Asian, and Japanese.

I have already taken pictures of those particular games. Plus, I am trying to lay them out like the photo gallery pictures of the home carts. Thanks for the offer, though. :)
