Anyone know where I can get an english guide to Densha De Go 2? Most of it I figured out, but there are a few details I must be missing because I can't quite make it through a level yet.

If you want an English guide, I'm your man. PM me with your questions. I can read the Japanese and play the game, but I don't have anything written down.

I need a guide that translates the menus and the warnings in the game. Half the time, I can't figure out why I lose (although my poor train conducting skills don't help).

I wholeheartedly agree. I can't figure this game out either, what with my current knowledge of japanese being nothing crying

Mad props must go to me when I finish writing a guide. For now, I'll just write a guide for getting started and finishing up the easiest level as well as the different control configurations. Another reason I love this game is because it is one of the few rare 32 Megs cart on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and SNK did a fantastic job porting this, as can be expected, I love you SNK!

Ok, I've gotten a little bit busy this week but I want to still help everyone get started on this game so here's a little something to help everyone get started.
These are the default controls of the Densha de Go 2 train operator:

Joystick controls:
Up: brake (If you hold down the joystick to the up position for a while, it will activate the emergency brake.)
Left: Activate Emergency Brake
Right: Release brake
Down: accelerate

Button controls:
Left button: Honk horn
Right button: Professional mode (not for the faint of heart, this hides your speedometer, so you are kind of driving blind like Tommy and relying on your sense of smell to operate the train.)

The interface
You start at a dead half at the station. The big '30' number is the amount of seconds you are alotted, so for each second you are late in passing a station or arriving at a station, this counter ticks down. And there are various other offenses, like accelerating while in a station will subtract your overall time, if you don't stop within 3 meters of the spot where you are supposed to bring the train to a halt time will also be subtracted from that counter.
To the left of that 30 are two time clocks, the one on the top is the time you are supposed to pass or arrive at a station, and the one on the bottom that is ticking all the time is your current time. Every now and then some meter that says xx km/h will also pop up while you are operating the train, and that is the local speed limit which you should definitely obey, otherwise time will also be subtracted from your 30 second counter.

The Gameplay
Once the red light turns green, it's time for you to release the brakes on your train and head toward your destination. Do so by pressing right on the joystick, and then pull the joystick down to accelerate the train. The first area of the first railway track has a local speed limit of 35 km/h, so be sure to obey it otherwise time will be deducted from your counter. The first station you only have to pass by, and then the second one you have to stop at, so make sure you don't slow down for the first station, just make sure you pass it on time. When you come to railroad crossings, which you know you've come up to when you hear the 'cling cling cling' just like you would at an American railroad crossing, don't forget to honk the horn. Near the first railroad crossing, this mark will appear:

|><|

This is your sign that the speed limit has been removed, so you can gun the train, but I don't recommend taking the train past 87 km/h, from my experience that's the ideal speed, because deccelerating from speeds higher than that can be a bit slow due to inertia, Densha De Go 2 uses quite true physics.

Gaining time
You are awarded extra time when you accomplish certain feats. For instance, if you pass a station right on the schedule, not one second more and not one second less, you are awarded extra time. If you stop at the station right on the kisser, centimeters away from the designated stopping spot, you are also awarded extra time. If you honk your horn at the proper places even though there are no signs there, you will also gain extra time. This is akin to being just a safe driver while behind a wheel, stopping for passengers, obeying 25 mph in residence zones even when there is no risk of being discovered.
Hint: When entering a tunnel, always honk right about the entrance and you will gain some extra time.

Other important things to notice
Every now and then in the lower right part of the screen a big X will appear. that's a signal to honk the horn, don't forget it. In addition, know that thing you see usually in train movies where there's a post with some white pegs on it? It indicates what the incline of the track is, so pay attention to it, as it may affect your acceleration and speed.

That's all for the time being, happy train conducting!

Ok, I'm back with part 2 of my English guide for Densha de Go 2. I'll work on getting some screenshots at some point, don' t know how I'll go about doing that, maybe I can pop it on a scanner, suppose that'll work?

Getting your passengers to their destination on time

One of the most difficult things to manage in Densha de Go 2 is getting from point A to point B on time while screeching to a halt at the right spot, since you don't want passengers to not be able to get off the train. How do you accomplish this? Here's a quick lesson on Newtonian Mechanics.

Newtonian Mechanics
Sir Isaac Newton was a scientist dude and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences (I think). He is responsible for our current understanding of the relationship between speed and acceleration.
The one equation used to calculate distance traveled over a period of time is described as
Distance = (Initial Speed * time) + (Acceleration * time squared)/2

When acceleration is 0, in other words, the train is traveling at constant speed, the aforementioned equation is reduced to
Distance = Initial Speed * time

If one has a firm grasp on this equation, then making the deadlines should be no problem at all. Ideally you should use the first equation, but most of the times if you just hold your speed constant there should be no problem at all, use the second equation. The meter that is always ticking down on the lower right corner is the remaining distance until the next station you pass or are supposed to stop at, divide this amount by your current speed, and you should easily arrive at the amount of time required to reach the next station, then adjust your speed accordingly.
If you're way behind schedule, gun that engine to catch up on lost time. Don't think that there will be no penalty for speeding though; even when there is no speed limit, when your train exceeds 100 km/h or more, the next time you resume train conducting your superiors will be keeping an eye on you by imposing a probationary speed limit that you must obey. Disobedience will result in lost time and the emergency brake will be forcibly engaged.
