well after taking the Noe geo Pocket color plunge almost a month ago, i thought i would post my thoughts (spam) on this little handheld

well i wasnt really interested in it until i accidentally fell into the pocket forum and after reading about it i thought i would get one

the machine itself is very light and very sturdy with a very clear screen - just a shame its not backlit

The games

After asking various members opinions what the best games were, i bought some and here is what i think

Metal Slug 1st mission - excellent
Metal Slug 2nd mission - excellent
Neo Geo Cup 98 - meh
Neo turfmasters - excellent
Samurai Shodown 2 - excellent
Magical Drop pocket - excellent
puyo pop - okay
king of fighters r2 - excellent
baseball stars - okay
pocket tennis - okay

still to play:
Pocket Reversi
puzzle bobble mini
beastbusters
fatal fury 1st contact
match of the millenium
gals fighters
cool boarders
sonic pocket adventure
last blade

havent got round to these yet as i love turfmasters

so to round up i am soo happy i bought one and thanks for all the pointers for the good games

still quite taken a back, not really a hand held person

i am still thinking about getting a ngpc, but the cost of a slinline ngpc and the games i want is the same as a gp32 with a 128mb smc card (about $200). I don't know which one to get. I am thinking about getting a slimline camouflage blue ngpc with biomotor unitron, motm, picture puzzle, and puzzle bobble mini.

You really cant go wrong with a NGPC.
Its an extremely well designed little unit with no real 'down side' apart from the limitations games wise.

If I had to list the top three things I love about the NGPC it would be as follows:

1. Design.
The Pocket has got so much going for it. You can play it for an extended period without feeling like you're getting an RSI. The fact that it actually has a decent controller makes it head and shoulderrs above virtually any other handheld. The screen, although not backlit, is clear and can still be played in room-lite.

2. Innovation.
Its not just another handheld! SNK almost stepped out from the 'Game Boy' shadow, and actually came up with a console which should have been real competition for the GB-Color.
Apart from the controller, the memory back-up, built in functions etc. The Pocket doesn't suffer from dumbed down versions, or old ports problems that plague some consoles. The Pocket has a unique library (albeit a small one) of genuinely good games.

3. One off style.
Everything about the NGPC is a one off! From the expensive looking spray-painted finish, to the super-deformed graphical style. Even games that you wouldn't normally like, have a strange attraction on this little hand-held marvel. OK, so there are a few 'standard' games, like Bust-a-move, but even they are handled so well, that they are given a new lease of life on the Neo.

Its a great shame that the NGPC was destroyed by Aruze' miss-handling.
If it had been the sucess it deserved to be, and received more third party support, what might we have seen?

Super deformed Mortal Kombat? wink

I would have loved to see the Chu Chu Rocket that was confirmed to be developed for the Neo Geo Pocket, curse you Gameboy Advance, that was supposed to be ours!

good god.
puyo pop is satan.
glad you like it.
NGp systems are so cool arent they?
theyre just mini NEOGEO systems really.
the d pad is made just like a NEO joystick.
the games are primarily fighting games.
and they play almost exactly like the big NEOGEO
counterparts.
its loads of fun to play.
you ought to get some of the card fighters clash
games. no NGp collection is complete without it sir.
:)

Cool stuff you got there, buster.

I bought a blue NGPC long ago, and so far I have six games for it, BU, KoF R1+2, Slug 1, MotM and Sonic. Apart from two or three others I'm looking for, that's really all need. rare is right, it's a fun machine and the games are surprisingly accurate. For ex. most moves of the KoF98 charas work in KoF R2 too (except for the bigger combos of course), that's really amazing IMO.

If you know the Genny Sonics, you will be surprised about Sonic NGPC. Again, you won't notice a difference, gameplay-wise, it's all there, and it feels just like the original.

The game that gets the most play time on my pocket is KoF R2. Personally I think it's the best handheld fighter out there.

Too bad that there are so few shooters on it. A Sonic Wings NGPC would have been cool. Ah well, you can't have it all I guess.

Some Magical Drop Pocket is fun on there too. Exactly like the arcade game.

Ive had mine for about a month too with Sonic only (4 pieces left you bastard game) and its really alot more fun and playable that I initially thought it would be.
