Hey all, I'm curious to know what can be actually unlocked in this game? I've played through the game about 5 or 6 times already (3 times on normal and twice on very hard) and I've unlocked the 2nd character. Also I've gotten 22 of the 23 rankings (last one I got was GA.) but can't seem to get the last one.

Any ideas?

That one is killing me too. Various forum regulars have informed me you have to 1. Get all rank medals (and more) and 2. you have to play the game on the hardest difficulty to attain the 23/23 rank. I believe I've done that, I've ran through every branch there is and still I have 22/23 only, it's killing me. This is like, much worse than the Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure puzzle pieces because at least the latter is visible when you come near it.

when your rank is 23/23 you become invinsible!
I think the latest boss is playable too, but I'm not sure.

Have you a Metal Slug 1st mission with the coveted 23/23 rank, cre$u$? If you do, any tips? I don't know what I missed.

There needs to be a Faq on how to get that coveted 23/23 rank. I've run through the game god knows how many times and still have yet to reach 23/23.

Well I just got the 23/23 rank (SD.) Here it is in a nutshell from what I can gather:
1) You must start a new game in Very Hard mode, AND
2) Collect 22 shield icons in the game

It appears the ONLY way your rank goes up is if you collect the shield icons. How many points you score makes ZERO difference. You can only collect one per stage although I've found in several stages there are more than one place to get them (if you missed the first place or passed that place in a level and died before finishing the level). I'm guessing there's at least one spot in every level but I only found shield icons in about half of the levels. Most of the time I've found them in the prison camps (basically if you 'die' or destroy your vehicle while in a vehicle stage (in most cases) you will be sent to a prison camp). Once in the prison camp you can usually get the icon from one of the prisoners you save (although there are at least 2 instances where you get them from a yellow guard that you kill and one where the shield icon is in plain view).

As far as what you get for doing all this, your life meter is maxed out and you become invincible except if you fall in a pit. It appears though that the rumor that Colonel Bildegaarn becomes playable is FALSE (at least from what I've seen). :(

Also I found a bug in the game. In the last stage where you fight the jumping guy with the knives (don't know his name) the game will not advance to the next area if you kill him with your knife and you'll have to reset the game. I'm guessing the same thing happens if you do this to the guy the first time you fight him.

Whew! Got all that? :)

I have found about 10 if I should guess, but never 22 pieces spock

Oh my god this one is going like the Sonic Pocket Adventure tickled Good Luck finding 'em all wink

I think I was able to locate all the shields in the prison camp, but do you have to get the 22 shields ALL at once, or can you do it through several separate runs through the game? As far as I know there doesn't seem to be any way to play through all the levels at once, the game forks the paths so you go different ways each time.

Here's a somewhat daft/good idea, but how about each one of us post the list of locations of the shields he was able to locate and we can compile a list in the end? Best way to do it will probably be to PM someone, and then he just keeps editing the same post until all 22 are in order.

I got started on this thing. First off, I don't think you ever get rank medals from defeating bosses, and it appears each medal, despite how many times it appears in different areas of one mission, only counts ONCE. This happens usually when you die in any area of a mission, so the medal credit resets to zero. Please PM me with your finds and I will compile them into this list.

Mission 0:
Part A (On foot) - none
Part B (Metal slug) - none
Part B.2 (Lose slug, go to Prison Camp) - one obtained from [the only] yellow guard.
Part C (Slug flyer) - right before the area reaches the end, one can be found right in the open
Part C.2 (Lose slug, parachute) - one can be found on the left side of the screen when you freefall; stay on the left when freefalling.
->Go to Mission 1

Mission 1:
Part A (Slug flyer) - there may be one, but when I picked it up I was unaware of it, and when I lost the flyer to proceed to the parachute mini game, I was aware that the rank medal was nowhere in sight. Hints appreciated.

Part A.2 (Parachute) - one can be found close to the right side of the screen when freefalling, but don't stay all the way to the right or you will miss it.
->Go to Mission 7

Mission 7
Have yet to find one
Meet up with hostage -> Mission 8
Take secret exit -> Mission ?

Mission 8
Part A (Metal Slug) - None
Part A.2 (Prison camp) - Yellow guard on watch before the exit carries the rank medal.
->Mission 2

Mission 2
Have yet to find one.
->Mission 3

Mission 3
Have yet to find one
Normal exit ->Mission ?
Secret exit ->Mission 4

Mission 4
Have yet to find one
->Mission 10

Mission 10
Part A (Slug Flyer) ->Have yet to find one
Part A.2 (Parachute)->On right side, be careful not to meet the cliffside freefalling your way down.
->Mission ?

Mission ? (Sorry, forgot to write down the number)
Have yet to find one.

Mission 14
Part A (Metal Slug) ->Have yet to find one
Part A.2 (Prison camp)->Hostage carries medal, to the very left of the shuffling blocks.
->Mission 11

Mission 11
Have yet to find one
Normal exit ->Mission ?
Secret exit ->Mission 15

Mission 15
Part A (Metal Slug) ->Have yet to find one
Part A.2 (Prison Camp) ->The very last door has a prisoner that carries the medal.
Part A.2.2 (Mining carts) ->If you died in this part, a rank medal may appear below one of the platforms, you have to jump off the cart at the very last second as it plunges into the pit to get it and land on the platform right above it.
->Final Mission

Final Mission
Have yet to find one

Well, that's all I have so far. PM me for your new findings.

Ok, here's an update on the whole deal. Phoenix Down was extremely helpful in solving this mystery, and I finally obtained the coveted 23/23 rank. This is the skinny:
1. You MUST start a new game under the 'Very Hard' mode. This is because old rank medals obtained under other levels will not count toward your quest for the 'Devil' rank.
2. It is still true that in each mission you may obtain only one rank medal, because once you obtain a rank medal in one area, it won't appear in the other area of the same mission because the game has already counted it toward your one rank medal per mission credit.
3. This is the big shocker. I thought the game keeps track of each unique medal you obtain because that's how Metal Slug 2nd Mission keeps track of the unique prisoners you rescue. It does not, I repeat, does not matter how many times you get the same medal, as long as you obeyed the condition cited in 1. and finish the mission with it, then the game credits you with an additional rank.

There may well be 22 rank medals, since in some missions there are as many as three and as few as one, but I have not completely found them all yet because I just worked on running through the game several times in the way I outlined in a previous post. once you get the 22nd rank medal, you have reached the 23/23 rank and become invincible, immune to all damage except for one thing: the spike pits, those still deal a little tick damage that will eventually kill you if you stay on it. Even crush damage from boxes dropped on you will not kill you.

I suspect the reason why the FAQ's say the boss becomes playable is because in Japanese, the rank is 'Big Monster Boss', which is incidentally Hyakutaro's rank in Metal Slug 2nd Mission, a generic term Japanese use for 'stage boss'. The final Boss is in fact not playable when you attain 23/23.

Yep, you're exactly right. Thanks for detailing the locations of the shields, I was going to do that but then I got lazy... :o

Anyway, glad I could help. :)
