I've just completed an S-Vid mod on it (yeah, yeah, RGB is better blah, blah, blah) and also added an LED power indicator behind the logo and cleaned up my prior AV mod. Everything works well, but, again, my audio is really quiet. I've tapped my audio signals from the expansion port pins, which I think that it's pretty much a line out to, say, the Turbo Booster or Turbo CD base where it get's amplified.

Any way I can amplify the sound, even with a simple circuit? If anyone has ideas, please chime in. Thanks.

You can use 10uf@16v caps in line. Input on the + side.

You might have to replace all the caps that are connected to the sound lines. It shouldn't be too hard to do with replacing and cleaning up any residue on the traces. Also, you might have to check for corrosion and do minor trace repairs. I never hear about regular TG-16 systems having this problem that often, but I guess it can happen since some of these were made around the same time TG Express/GT handhelds were around. Some bad caps were made in the early 90's with NEC products.

Just for the sake of mentioning it, the "TurboBooster" (regular and "plus") attachments do have some mild audio amplification built in. I don't know if you have one (and can still use it with your mods) or not though.

Yup. That's where I got most of my connection points, straight from the expansion port pins, just from under them. The TG-16 I have is already region modded that works perfectly.

I was hoping that BlueBMW or DuoR would chime in on the PCEngineFX board, but nothing yet.

I don't have a TurboBooster, since back in the day, I only played with RF.:oh_no: Figure I wouldn't need one since I did this mod. Dumb audio issue though.

Wasnt just NEC products, loads of products used Nichicon and Rubycon capacitors!!

If it does have those 2 brands in it, they will probably all need replacing. They tend to leak, so i wouldnt leave them.

So, after a bunch of Google searches for simple audio amps, I came across this one:

Hack A Week - Single NPN Transistor Audio Preamp

After gathering all the parts and building the circuit, I got this:

(I didn't know that my camera had shitty sound playback, so you might have to turn up your speakers to hear the difference)

It was only a single side circuit I made. I switched from Left (audio straight from EXP) to Right (audio from preamp) to show the difference.

I can barely hear anything from the monitor but I can hear you moving the camera nice a loud. Are you sure you built the circuit correct? What voltage value are you using for the pull-up, 5v?

Yeah. My recording was fine. For some reason when I uploaded it, the volume got cut down. The circuit does work, the video didn't do it justice unless you turn your speakers up.

Forgot to mention that replacing the 10uf 16V cap SMD for C142 (Pin 43 to ground) with a 100uf SMD or 220uf Electrolytic on the TG-16 helps remove some jail barring and RF like interference with your S-video. I did this with my Duo which is the C961 in front of the HuCard slot and it improved it.

As for sound: I am curious to why you don't have a CD-Rom2 or Booster (+ model) on it? Worth it for the easy already amped RCA audio out, battery save with some HuCards or playing CD games. Still, a Duo R/RX is the way to go for Super CD-Rom games and overall lifespan.

Because I'm cheap and I already have a PCE Duo. Just using my TG16 as a hacking hobby. I may try your tip with the caps. I always would like a cleaner picture.
