Just got a GP32, w/ 2 games--Little Wizard & Dungeon & Guarder. Therfor, I can only offer my initial impression first. BTW, I am going to ramble now so bear w/ the grammar & size of the post.
As everyone knows, the system uses reflective technology, like GBA & NGCP, and the screen is auite abit larger than GBA. And the screen is alot more clear--akin to NGCP. The system is light too, similair in weight to GBA.
The Game box reminds me of later USA NGCP boxes--but it's not that bad. And the cart suspiciously reminds me of the Horrific Atari's Lynx cart (which only had few good games like Dracula unleashed, for ex). But it's many times thinner--thinner than CC. And first when I turned the system, I saw that "load" on the screen, and asked myself--what the... but it's quite acceptable. There is no reason to worry.
OK, on to the games: The Little Wizard reminds me of Gals Fighter, w/out the mad combos. The storyline and the moves are somewhat goofy, and you can get items & use them (more creatively employed than Gowcaizer) in the game. The best part is the graphics which is huge & vibrant. Sound is acceptable, not that bad or good to write up. Gameplay....it kind of feels like I am playing a computer game. The game speed is fast but it feels that timing is abit off. The controls are so-so, and combos are scarce as well. I can't compare it w/ ANY NGCP games. I remember first picking up the black & white NGCP system, w/ KOF R1 at an import store, when they first came out. From the first gameplay, I was hooked and it quickly made me in to a NGCP fan. It's not the case here. But since they are not experienced as SNK, and it is their first attempt at the genre, so I guess it's a decent game. Also, this game is all in Eng--even the storyline--so people who like off-beat fighting games w/ no Korean undersatnding should pick this up.
Dungeon & Guarder is your traditional hack & slash game that reminds me of Dungeon & Dragons for Arcade/Sat. The gameplay and move is simple & intuitive. What I liked about this game was that as you travel, you can lv up, buy items & such. The graphic is decent, and somewhat reminds me of Guardina Heroes for Sat (once again, w/out that MAD combos). The storline is ok too--not too many surprises. Music is acceptable but abit tiny though. The game can get abit repetitve, but it's allright. And I am not a big fan of the side scroling genre.
In korea, it's not common to see a 6 year old Korean or 70 year old woman on street/subway having their own cellphones. That's why, it's logical for GP to incorporate online feature using a cellphone. MP3 is more popular there too. I don't know if I can connect to Korea here in US, and haven't tried to download any mP3's yet. From what I sampled thus far w/ the games, I don't really have a high expectations of MP3 feature, but will soon.
So, is it a must buy? Not realy. I can't recommend this system over GBA yet--unless, if you abhor the dark GBA screen & don't play it like me. But this system has good possibilites. And some up coming games IS a great title like Astonishing R (can't be a problem, since it's basically a direct port of a great PC game), for ex. And, how can people pass up games like KOF & Megaman titles? So, I recommend this system, if you already have GBA, and want to have a neat system w/ MP3 download/ play feature, & wireless online capabilities. Anyways, I don't regret buying this system, and looking for more games.
BTW, since I have decent command of Korean language--much better than Japanese, if anyone have problem w/ the menus and such, I am more than willing to help.
