I just uploaded a web page with the procedure I use to change these batteries. I haven't seen another like it, so hopefully at least someone will find it useful.

Tell me what you think.

Nice pics...although a similar page was already available:

<a href="http://www.online-club.de/~arcade2/suicidecps.htm" target="_blank">http://www.online-club.de/~arcade2/suicidecps.htm</a>

All in all a safer method (although I do not use a helper battery either).

I don't like the idea of using a AA battery: it results in a far-fetched job. A better idea in my opinion would be to install a 1/2AA battery holder, so that the swap will become a matter of seconds and no longer entail any (de)soldering.

How about using a AA battery holder?

And is there any solid evidence that a helper battery is necessary?

The plastic housing of battery holders is meant to lay on the PCB and with a AA type this is just impossible for want of space.

I think there is enough evidence that a battery helper is not really needed (but it never hurts to use one). I successfully swapped a battery a couple of weeks ago: the board remained without battery for no longer than 3 minutes.

I’ve actually made myself a helper battery for use in this procedure, but errrr........was too slack to bother using it as like you say MKL, its only a matter of seconds when replacing it with a 1/2 AA cell. 100% success rate too which is good! The only thing that freaks me out though is I've heard that some component sends a call to the chip with the encryption key contained every once in a while and apparently if you're unlucky enough ta have the battery out of the board at the time it does its thing you're in trouble! But anyway so far so good! I've made one for CPS-1 games too but of course this one is integral as if the security chip loses power at all it will die.

Well at least it still beats SEGA's suicide battery antics with its on chip 68000 and Z80 batters encased in epoxy. Hooray for SEGA thanks for that! :D

Great walkthrough, great pictures... I'd recommend a battery holder as well... Thats a nice mod, one of the black plastic type that seal over the battery... Would make changing it a snap in the future!

Exactly the ones I was thinking of... I think I am going to have to do that to my VS board.

Nicely done, same mathod as the one described on CPS2shock. In case you diddent know boards can last without a battery for much longer than 1 hour. I have had one board last 4hours and another a mega 12hours with no battery before it finally died.

It makes it alot easier knowing suicide CPS2 pcbs can be brought back to life also if one does mess up the battery changing process.

It looks to me like the company that makes the battery holders gives out free samples. Someone should try it out. I'd do it myself but my address is about to change, and I don't want to loose the shipment (if they actually send something) in the mail.
