I want to mod a DC stick to Neo maintaining DC compatibility

I already succesfully mod a DC stick to work with the Neo, but I disconnected the DC cable on it so I can't use it for DC unless I undo the mod. Check:
<a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=002240" target="_blank">http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=002240</a>

Now I want to make the same but respecting the DC function. So I mustn't unplug the connectors from the PCB. However I'm afraid that if I directly solder the new coble in the PCB without unpugging them there maybe some shorts there, as some of the pins from that connectors are electrically connected (I did a continuity test). However Doughboy appearently did that with no probs (check that topic).

So I was thinking about the following:
I cut the cables that connect to the PCB and attach some molex connector with the wires that will go to the estra cable. I put the opposite sex of the molex in the cables that were in the DC connector. So if I have trouble with the DC connection I can just unplug it from the pcb.
I know my explanation sucks, but what do you think?

By the way, there's no way I can find the small connectors that go to this type of PCBs, all I got is too big. Tomorrow I'll go to the best electronics shop to buy some parts I need like a crimping tool and lopk again.

Thanks in advance.

hi Amano,

When I did mine I just used the soldering iron to melt away some of the plastic around each of the wires..

Then wrapped the wire for the neo-port around the bare wire and added some solder...then put insulating tape around.

Both my DC sticks have had over 1 year of abuse and still work fine with DC and MVS.

Yeah, looking at your pics I saw you did something like that... However I thought it could be trouble using it with your Neo (not with the DC) as that way contact to the IC chip is still made. You know, when you mod a controller usually the first thing you do is removing or isolating the chip.

Anyway if it worked for you then I'll make the same try, so far it's the easier way and chances of damaging something are none... I might try to cut a bit the plastic instead of melting it.
Also I'll use a PC joystick extension cable, cutting the male end and adding the wires in the spots. I think I can use the hole for the VMU for the cable, that way I don't need to drill a hole nor use a DB 15 plug. OK, then I can't use the VMU but I can put it in my pad in another controller socket.

Thanks for all your help.

OK, I did more or less the same as you and successfully modded both my sticks to work with Supergun/Neo and DC. Tomorrow I'll explain more details.

Thanks for your help! <img src="graemlins/mrt2.gif" border="0" alt="[Mr T]" />

Well, at the beginning I was like you, but after some practice I managed to learn a bit by myself. The instructions for the Saturn pad are here:

<a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001621" target="_blank">http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001621</a>

I did that mod myself, and it ain't easy. The soldering spots are really small so you need to have good nerves and soldering skills. Definately I wouldn't recommend you starting with that one. This one for the DC stick is much easier.

About the cable, is just a matter of luck. Here in Barcelona they cost me 5€ with plastic end so it's very easy to adapt it for Neo. You should look at ebay or on-line computer parts stores.

In this thread I gather all the links about controllers, all I know was learned there:

Good luck.

For the cable I just used a standard pc svga lead that you pick up from any pc shop..

Just used a female 15pin plug on the dc stick and a 15pin male on the supergun.

you can stick the up/down/left/right..etc wires wherever you want...just make sure they match on the other plug too..

oh, buy the cable first....one of the 15 pins doesn't exist on the standard svga cable... I had to move 1 wire on each of my plugs cos of this.
