I have a strange, constant, beep coming from my arcade cabinet when it is on. It happens even when no cart is in the cartslot. It houses an old-style 1-slot MVS board. I was wondering what you guys would suggest and to know what exactly is wrong with it.(I was told to unplug it by someone in chat) as to about what is wrong, and if there is something that I could do to fix it (without technical know-how.)

It sounds like a pager beeping? Why are you running the cab without a game inserted? The game plays fine, you just here a constant beeping in the background? How long is the interval between beeps (how fast is it beeping)?

Weird...

It's not like a pager.. It's a constant beep. I don't mean it goes BEEP.. BEEP... It's just like beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Kinda like a whistle. I was running the cab without a cart inserted to see whether or not it was the cart causing the noise.

Ok, one last set of questions. Has this happened since you've had the cab, or is this a recent problem? You can play games fine, you just here there beeping noise in the background?

Well, I hadn't *noticed* it until yesterday. Not sure if it was there before or not. And the games have been running fine (I was told to unplug it because it might damage my machine permanently. Someone told me it was a ground fault in either speakers, monitor, or something else... but was looking for second opinions/further advice)

Hmm, tough call. If you have had the cab awhile and are just now noticing it, it probably has something to do with the monitor (speakers might have gone bad). Is this a very faint beeping sound that becomes louder when you turn up the volume? If the sound is coming from the speakers and is amplified with an increase in volume, you might want to have a look at the speaker connection (make sure there is no damage to the wires and that the connection to the speakers is clean and doesn't come into contact with anything else) or even pick up a cheap replacement pair and swap them in.

If the sound is emmiting from INSIDE the cab it is probably your monitor, and I don't mess with that stuff <img src="graemlins/tickled.gif" border="0" alt="[Tickled]" />

What frequency, is it a beep or a whistle. Its probably the monitors 15 khz horizontal output ringing.
There was a recent post on this.
Is it beep or high freq whistle ??

OK, thanks.. At least I'm not the only one with this problem. I guess I'll have to get it looked at by a professional. Seems like this is a common problem, eh? Thanks again guys!

If you are comfortable with removing the monitor pcb,and know the procedure, take as high a res pic from around the flyback transformer as you can. send to sparry@datec.com.pg (thats me)may be able to give further advice. If your not used to this sort of thing, have a word with your local freindly TV tech and talk about it over a beer :) . It doesnt sound like a serious problem. Dont beleive its the yoke>
However if in doubt do not touch, the crt remains charged for a while, probably wont kill you but it hurts. :(

To be honest I am really not comfortable at all doing anything more than switching carts on my cab.. I'm pretty much technically incompetent when it comes to electronics like that... Probably gonna have a profesionall look at it.

Good news.. Before emailing someone to take a look at it, I plugged the cab back in and turned it on without a cart.. No whistle/beep. I put in KOF 98 and it sounded great with no whistle.. Any idea what would have caused that? Could it have been that I was turning on/turning off cab quite a few times in a short period of time?

You symptom sounded EXACTLY like mine. Check out my response in the thread link that was provided above. I think this may be your root problem, providing you have light "panels" and not a flourescent header.

Actually, it's a 1-slot (I believe it to be converted from a Taito cab) and it uses flourescent bulbs, not panels...
Regardless, not sure exactly what it was, but is it safe to play it like this now that it seems to have stopped? I mean, I won't blow the monitor or something, or the monitor won't explode in my face or something... Heh.

It sounds to me like you have an inductor physicaly oscillating in th horizontal output stage of the monitor, 15Khz is obvious, put some correction fluid on any inductor core/ former in the hoizontal output.
IMHO thats all it can be.
