Hi all. I stumbled across a Sega Nomad in pristine condition with battery pack, car charger, a few games and official carrying case today for $39 at a Mom & Pop store.

I have some questions for anyone that owns a Nomad.

I can use the Genesis 2 AC adapter and A/V cable with the Nomad correct?

If so, I found a 3rd party "Universal" AC adapter that works with Nintendo systems and Genesis 2. I assume this would be safe to use?

The main question I have is this:
Can I play Japanese Mega Drive games on the Nomad?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, you can use Model 2 AV / AC adapters. Personally, I avoid third party power supplies but I'm probably just being paranoid.

Mega Drive games on a Nomad... Yes and no. You can use a passthrough converter like a Mega Cart or Game Genie, but that might look / feel kind of silly on a portable. Otherwise, you're not totally out of luck. Certain MD carts are shaped slightly differently and can fit in the Nomad slot. Some plain don't fit, others fit OK, and others are a pain to get in and out and are at risk for being damaged. For example, my friend forced Stryder in there and it was very difficult to get out - I thought the cart or the Nomad would break. I wouldn't really advise it and I think the majority of carts don't fit or barely fit.

Yes.
A genny 2 adapter is totally a necessity.
The nomad EATS batteries like crazy.
One thing that bugged me endlessly is that the connection for the adapter to the Nomad
was always disconnecting if you moved it around just a little bit.
Awesome system, if not a little too heavy for it all.

Thanks for the replies. The place I bought it from found a used SEGA brand AC adapter for the Genesis 2 and I traded the car charger for it. Works perfectly, just need to find a Genesis 2 A/V cable now.

I'll try to pick up a Game Genie at some point for Mega Drive games. I don't plan on carrying this around and playing it outside of the house much anyway. I mainly got it because I had some early Xmas money and the deal was too good to pass on. Plus, I haven't owned a Genesis since 1994.

Here's a picture of the entire package I got:

Sweet pick up man, congrats. I got mine for 50 bucks when they were selling them off at Toys R Us back in the 90's. Really glad I got it. I just wish it wasn't so damn big. I really want to call the guy up who makes the battery pack and LCD screen mod. He does some top quality work, but the damn thing is too big to travel with.

I know for a fact at least that PAL Mega Drive games work on the Nomad. I have Zero Wing and it works fine on my Nomad.

Some Pal games such as the Wily Wars won't work on your nomad because of region lock, For power supply u can use ac adaptor from Genesis model II or model III should work. Also the av for Genesis model III can also be used to hook up the nomad to your tv.

Most Japanese games will work, also as previously mentioned it depends on the shape of the cartridge if u get security bit tools off ebay u can switch cases from a Jpn game to a us game so your games will always fit on the nomad.

As far as power issues always use official power supplies they are better quality.
