neo geo cd - possible mod problems

so i finally installed a region switch on my jap top-loader neo. (it had previously been hard wired into a us machine, and worked flawlessly for years.) it seemed to work smoothly, until i got a i/o error id = 0002 while loading kof 97.

as far as i know, an id = 0002 error is a media error. now, my disc is clean, but it has tiny scratches in possibly sensitive places (damn you compaq presarion 1200 cd-rom). after powering the unit off, and back on, i resumed playing kof 97, without any problems.

this same console had died only weeks after i had bought it (and modded it), therefore i am now deathly afraid of any i/o errors. was this just an isolated case, or are id = 0002 errors indicative of a mod gone wrong?

(note: i only use original discs, so don't even go there.)

As a general rule if something doesn't happen more than once or in a repeatable fashion it's not a problem. Ask again when it happens reliably. =)

So, how did you fix it? Or do you mean this is a diff unit?

back then i just took it back to the dude who sold it to me with the receipt, and he sent it in to snk. what they did is replace the entire controller sub board (with my half assed mod) and possibly the cd assembly. so yes, it's pretty much a different unit.

true, but i'm paranoid, sue me. that and by the time it happens "reliably" it'll be too damn late, and my system would be hosed. i'm trying to avoid that you see.

Well, that's like a laser read error. Probably had a speck of dust on it or something. I don't see how a mod switch could affect the laser, etc. I'd say your system is just getting old - the lasers do eventually go out. But yours probably IO'd that one time because of something on the disk. I had a kof 97 (!) that did the same thing - 02 error on my personal system. I took out the disk, and it had this huge piece of dust on it, and as soon as I cleaned it off it worked.

So I wouldn't worry about it.

ok, i tried out the neo last night to see if i had done any damage. i played kof 97 and 95 for several hours straight with not a single hint of a problem. so far so good, but i'm not out of the woods yet. can anyone give me assurance that an i/o error (id = 0002) is not related to a crappy mod job.

(also, is 30 guage wire too thin to use for a language switch?)

unless you drilled your mod into the laser its not related in any way
lol ha, good one. while that is definitely possible, it is not the case (this time).
