I received an amazing present from scgon last night; can you shooter enthusiasts guess what it is just from this picture?

TOAPLAN, Romstar... that narrows it down...

Yeah! It's:
Spoiler:

OUTZONE! Yeah, TOAPLAN!

I had to quickly rig up an Amiga monitor as a TATE screen so I could save my aching neck and stop playing 'sideface' (copyright pending - all rights reserved).

Thanks scgon! You rock! :buttrock:

The interesting thing is I've seen screenshots where they have 7 characters available on the Name Entry screen, but mine only has 3 characters. Is it an older revision?

Have you checked gamefaqs or anything? Might be like Dimahoo with unlockable characters.

present? dude, you've gone on three 10 hour road trips with me to move cabs... as an hourly rate a lemonade stand would have been more profitable for you!

:glee:

any way.... glad you're enjoying it! I did read that there were 2 revisions of this game.... not sure if that is relevant to the Name Entry Screen or maybe that is region specific??

My apologies; by 'characters', I mean letters. When you input your name on the high score screen, I can only put in 3 letters. I've seen shots where they can put in 7...

Thanks! We can play this game at my house on a TATEd 13" monitor :crying: ... or we can play it in style at your house with the vert N.Astro. Not a tough choice. One day, I'll have a proper candy setup. Until then, I'm glad I can experience fresh cabby goodness at your place!

Awesome. Toaplan for life.

Thanks guys! scgon is one of the best friends a person could ever have. High five to him!

Even though it has the trappings of a 'Commando' or a 'Mercs'... it really plays like a Toaplan/Cave/Raizing vertical shooter. You can control the rate of scrolling, but you'll be shucking and jiving just as if you were playing DoDonPachi. The controlling of the scrolling is a bit of a psych-out too, because even though you CAN take your time and loiter, you constantly have to find energy icons or you will die! It really adds to the game.

The game was kicking my ass at will. I was expecting that, but I looked at the DIPs and realized it was set on Difficult! I'm going to be all macho and keep it there. Even on a harder level, it still seems 'fair'; you get the feeling that if you were just a little bit better, you wouldn't have died.

ALSO: Not only did I get the PCB, but the instruction manual too! I'll be willing to post scans if anyone is interested.

I'm curious if any one else has a Outzone board... MAME has emulated a Set 1 and a Set 2, but certain threads on the net say that all USA versions (ie Romstar boards) should be Set 2. I wonder what the differences are.
