Differing button layouts on an MVS cab?

I really don't like the button layout on my MVS cab.

I guess it's the "standard" Neo layout: the B, C, and D buttons all in a straight row, with the A button set about an inch lower. The buttons are too far apart for my taste, and I find it hard to put together combos that I have no problem with when playing the exact same game on my home system.

I've seen cabs that have a button layout more like the original Neo sticks (heck, there's on at a local grocery store like this): with all buttons set close together, and in a small arc.

Does anyone know where to get a control panel like this, or how difficult it would be to change/make one of my own? Since I'm going to be changing the joysticks out, I might as well get the button layout the way I'd like it too.

It depends on what your control panel is made of. If you have a conversion, it could be wood or metal. If it is wood, then you either have to build a new one or Bondo what you have and re-drill it. If it's metal, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Yo go to the Neo-Geo section of my site (link's in the sig). Click on the Universal Joysticks and you'll see how I got around that problem. I actually came up with a similar layout but have the buttons much much closer.

It's a true MVS cab, so unfortunately the control panel is metal - it doesn't look look like there's going to be an easy solution there... :(

I took a look at your site JHendrix, and you did some great work on the joysticks, but I don't think this is something I can use on a full cab. I would basically have to build an entirely new control panel from scratch.

I'm sure it's possible, but I'm kind of leery of the work involved (being that I have pretty much zero skills when it comes to this sort of thing ;) ).

If nothing else, I guess it is an option though. Has anyone else done this?

Other than that, I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open in regards to buying one.

That's actually not a bad idea. I've seen blank control panel overlays up for grabs quite a bit both on eBay and at various arcade parts stores, so I could always just replace the top cover from the panel once I'm done, and I don't think it would look too bad.

Granted, I'd loose the black area where the buttons are labeled A, B, etc., but other than that it still might be possible...

It's definately something to look into if I don't ever find the opportunity to purchase something outright.
