...everything EXCEPT gameplay.

Roster:
1. 2002
2. XI
3. 2001

Music:
1. '96
2. 2000
3. XI

Backgrounds:
1. '94
2. '96
3. 2000

Openings (not counting ports):
1. 2001
2. 2000
3. '94

Story -- okay this is a dumb category but deal with it:
1. 2001
2. 2000
3. XI

Nostalgia:
1. '94
2. '95
3. '98 ...the last one I played on a big red, out in the wild, against real people. Also has some Dreamcast nostalgia going for it. Not enough to overtake the first two games, but more than '96.

Overall:
1. 2002
2. '94
3. XI

fun.

Roster:
1. 98 - it's the dream match, 02 doesn't count, where they nerfed two of my favorites: clark and vice
2. 00 - like 99, except better. one word. hinako.
3. 95 - eiji. otherwise it would be 96.

Music:
1. 96 (love the aof theme, and yes, the ff theme)
2. 99 (first time hearing kyo's theme was awesome, also of note, the psycho soldiers theme)
3. 00 (can never get enough of the end credits)

Backgrounds:
1. 95 (waterfall stage, ikari bridge, good stuff)
2. 99 (love the rain stage, the airplane stage is neat too)
3. 96

Openings (not counting ports):
1. 00
2. 96
3. 98

Story
1. 96
2. 00
3. 99

Nostalgia:
1. 96
2. 94
3. 98

Overall:
1. 96 nostalgic pick
2. 98 all time vs kof
3. 00 love the story, the whole package.

Videogames are primarily about gameplay.

But they're not ONLY about gameplay.

The aesthetics play a huge part in their appeal.

Otherwise, why not just have every game have featureless, colorless characters and no music and no presentation?

Aesthetics give the game an identity. It's part of any video game.

wtf??

if your not lookin at game play wtf is teh point?? :oh_no:

The point is, maybe you don't spend a lot of time here and so don't know, but we've had a million threads over the years comparing the games by gameplay, and pretty much everyone's favorites gravitate around the same 2 or 3 games. So there's not much point discussing that any more.

You want to come in here and tell us your favorite KOF for gameplay is '98? Maybe 2002?

Whoop-dee-fucking- doo. No shit. We know that already. Guess what? Those are our favorites, too! Isn't that amazing? ZZZZZZzzzzz...

Or maybe you want to tell us your favorite KOF for gameplay is '96 or 2000? If so, get ready for a bunch of people to tell you that you are an idiot and your opinion is for shit, so don't bother.

So see? No point to a thread like that. If you don't feel like contributing here on this topic, why post?

I don't really don't feel like touching upon all of the criteria..

2002: Excellent roster and gameplay.

XI: Perhaps my favorite KOF roster. The tag system worked well.

97: My favorite real SNK KOF. Great roster...and awesome buggy combos. Hey, I'm not playing this game for balance. Power Charge X infinity!

3. urgh...if we were counting ports, then the PS2 arranged version of 03...this is hard.

good thread idea.
megashock_330 is an idiot, but I know how to handle these types: if you had to play [insert favorite fighting game] or an update to [insert favorite fighting game] with nothing but stick figures and bland backgrounds, which would you choose?

"Back you up"? "Back you up" nothing; he's fronting you up, or however you would say it (backing you down?). You are jumping on his bandwagon and pretending it is yours, just like Samurai Shodown 3.

The unmitigated gall of this shameless dick fucker.

2. 94 (GET 'EM RED)
