Cleaning the female board connectors can be a real pain. However, usually just tightening them up will force them to make better contact. Use a very small precision screwdriver to gently bend the clips out a little more towards the middle -- to make the gap where the cart boards slides in tighter.
I usually use an eraser to clean cart boards. You can use Alcohol to clean the contacts... Don't use the cheap stuff you get at K-Mart, that will leave a film.
