Can anyone suggest any not very obvious shooters to play that are on MAME?
There must be some real beauties hiding in there somewhere?:)

Anything from Cave, I'm partial to Ibara and Espgaluda. I'd recommend Blazing Star, but that seems pretty moot. Also, the Strikers games from Psikyo are a blast.

Try guwange from cave/atlus. I was just introduced to it, and I'd say its pretty badass! Try ESP.RA.DE, DonPachi, DoDonPachi, 1945k III, Aerofighters, AND MOST IMPORTANT IF YOU'VE NEVER PLAY'D... Twinkle Star Sprites. You will laugh your ass off, but it is fun to play.

Try the Raiden Fighters games if you havn't yet. Raiden Fighters Jet is one of my favorites. Twinbee Yahhoo, Radiant Silvergun, and Giga Wing are all fantastic titles also.

As for horizontal shooters, Darius Gaiden.

And of course, anything from Cave. They're all good on. Especially Guwange and Progear.

Raiden Fighters Jet isn't properly emulated is it? And Ibara and ESPgaluda are definitely not.. Dodonpachi is one of my favorites :)

all the Raden Fighters games are playable in MAME. Raiden II and DX arent emulated yet (protection). I highly recommend:

Battle Garegga is one of my favourite games of all time. don't worry about the bullets being tiny, you'll get used to it before long.

Also, The Game Paradise great fun and really inventive.

A few days ago I was messing around with MAME, and using the "play random game" button. I stumbled across a 'shmup I have NEVER heard anyone mention, and never makes any top 10 lists. The game is completely manic and a I love it! It almost looks like an early version of Pro Gear, and the look is very steam punk. You fly an old bi-plane (with a grappling hook that can catch and sling the enemy!), but when that gets too shot up you can jump out and run through the levels on foot. Sooner or later you'll stumble across elephants, horses, and other fighters you can jump into. Very challenging game. Any guesses on the name?

"Boogie Wings".

Seriously, check it out. Severely underrated and great for those of have played a bit too much from Cave/Toaplan/8ing/etc.

Everything about that game is ridiculous. Flying a bi-plane with a grappling hook to pick up tanks to sling at zeppelins - Then you get shot down, and while parachuting you bust a few caps at a flying warship, land and shoot down a squadron of fighter jets with your pistol and then mount an elephant to take on a platoon of olde-timey WWI tanks. Its like the dreams I have after eating an entire wheel of cheese. I don't know how I've gotten this far in my life without knowing about it. Its been my fav. for the last few days. :buttrock:

Aye, tis true;). My foe paw proves that i need to spend more time with this Gazelle gem. Too much tate'ing of 22oz bottles during my last post. :emb: Back on topic, i think the Arcade rev of Sky Shark is top shelf.
