Shock Troopers 1 is a better game. BY FAR.

Don't get me wrong, I like 2nd Squad a lot. But the game balance is just way off. I'd go into more detail, but I think my reviews in the Reviews section explain it better...

WTF? I totally agree with Kyo?!? Something's wrong here

Anyway. It was mentioned that 2nd Squad has better bosses. This is true. They put more effort into differentiating each boss. In Shock Troopers 1 you end up fighting big tanks and boats as bosses on multiple levels... and they all have similar patterns. And then there are the human bosses, which do similar stuff. The bosses in ST2S are much tougher to take down because there's a lot more to learn about them...

...but then again, they could afford to do that when there's only 7 unique levels in the game (Mission 1 is always the same, Missions 2 and 3 can be on Naval Base or Air Base route... and then 4 and 5 are the same). Shock Troopers 1 has a total of 17 different levels to explore in the game, so a little boss overlap is understandable.

What else does 2nd Squad have going for it?

-Vehicles! Earning more points for charged up shots in them is cool
-A bonus multiplier that steadily increases after consecutive close-range kills... I like
-Invincibility during close-range attacks
-Better implementation of the bomb system, since they can be earned by picking them up from close-range attacks instead of at designated points in the level (like ST1)
-Angel (good call, Fran)

um, that's mostly it. The thing I still hate most about 2nd Squad is how most attacks do over half a bar of damage (even when using Leon)... which wouldn't be much of a problem if LIFE-UPS WEREN'T SO FUCKING RARE. You can get them only by using close-range attacks/bombs on regular enemies, they never appear at guaranteed points (and no extra life is awarded after finishing a level). So you've got to take risks to get that life-up back... and then once you get it it restores what, like 25% of the bar? You need three of those just to recover from ONE HIT! And then there's the weapon system... when you've got a special weapon you can't lose life, but you will lose "ammunition" on the gun. That makes no fucking sense whatsoever. It does make the game a LITTLE easier because then you're guaranteed to stay alive if you take a hit... a lot of times when the ammo is almost out, I'll take a hit on purpose just so I can have some invincibility. But the whole special weapon system is a double-edged sword, because you can't receive life-ups when you're using one... instead you'll receive the green E boxes that boost your ammo. Whoop dee fucking doo.

Oh, and then there's the music. 2nd Squad has some pretty good tunes. I love the Mission 1, 4, 5 tunes... as well as the 1st and 4th boss tunes. But the soundtrack on Shock Troopers 1... Mere words can't express the amount of enjoyment I've gotten from the music in that game. Hands-down the best music I've ever heard in a video game, cartridge or CD. Each track is perfection except for maybe one weak "ambient" one...

I'm starting to ramble. Let's summarize:

Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad is a great game
but Shock Troopers is a masterpiece

Shock 1 blows away Shock 2, hands down. I couldn't believe how poor Shock 2 was in comparison to 1, especially in terms of graphics. Shock one has beautiful hand drawn graphics, rich colors, and great detail. Shock 2 has ugly prerendered graphics, cheap washed out colors, and lacks detail. I'm not sure what when wrong with the sequel, but looking at it, I'd guess that the original team that developed Shock 1 had nothing to do with Shock 2. There's no comparison at all . . .

Who cares? You mean you can't sit down to play it for the full 35-40 minutes?

I have only played ST2, so I can't offer a comparison between the first. I can say that ST2 is better than 90% of the junk out there, but still doesn't come up to the league of Metal Slug. One thing about the game that tends to hamper the experience is a lack of replay value, but I think almost all shooters suffer from this, so it doesn't seem like a big deal. I have played the hell out of that game, but after beating it fifteen times it does get tiring. Just so everyone knows, I have a ST2 MVS for trade if anyone's interested

st2 is a great games but the first is really better and more of that in the first you can choose three warriors to kick ennemy's butt that was a great idea but unfortunately that mode is not back in the 2nd squad

ST2 for me. I liked ST1 too but somehow I also play it with that feeling in my head that it is somewaht repetitive - always the same enemy attack patterns, the same bosses (heli, tank, boat) and a tedious level design and speaking for me the music isn`t all that great. ST2 has that fresh feeling that makes me come back time after time, dunno why. Maybe it`s the Slug effect.

I've never been a huge fan of ST2 (cept for Angel of course, who's not a fan of her? ) I think that ST2 had a bit more slowdown but as was said the bosses are better. Other things I do miss though (other than the life-ups) are the different weapons, like the machine gun, spray gun, etc. Those were sorely missed in ST2 despite the existence of vehicles. Plus, I thought ST2 was much more cartoonish than the first one, kinda turned me off a bit after becoming to accustomed to how ST1 plays. Just my opinion is all...

If the enemy attack patterns are always the same, try taking out all the human enemies with close-range attacks. Should be easy since they're all the same, right? Right?

That's strange, considering 2nd Squad has fewer levels. Does the battle with the last boss always feel fresh?

And Angel ROX!

Well, at least I agree on something...

Hey man, long time no see! Trade me that Shock Troopers 2 MVS Cart! Is there anything non-MVS you'd be looking for? Maybe... A Final Fight PCB? Let me know man.

I've never played 2, but Shock Troopers is one of my favorite games... Fuckin' amazing actually, came completely out of nowhere. Everybody seems to unanimously agree on the first game, but I've seen very mixed reviews of the second, the majority greatly leaning towards "worse than the first." I still wanna try the game though, I definitely do.

hehe..Ill be the odd one out and say 2 is better.

This is prob due to the fact that I played the 2nd one to death before I had even seen the first one.

Playing the first one now tho I can see why people would say its better.

ST1 is the shit!
1.Better music
2.Better story line
3.Better gameplay (in my oppinoin)
4.More Caracters
5.More of a fun factor

As for part 1 having better music, hmmmmm...I dunno about that. 2nd squad has some VERY nice tunes (Stage 1 & 4 spring to mind)

Tr00, it has a far better storyline...but then, I wasn't paying attention to it

Better Gameplay, if you mean that its more varied (routes, weapons and bosses)I would have to agree (haha, the motorbike level was great ). But then, i really prefer Jumping in 2nd compared to rolling in 1st

More Characters...well, fair enough...not alot you can say against that one.

More of a fun factor you say (hey..wheres the friggin tanks!)

If anyones after a copy of ST2 for MVS, I have one complete set here, dip settings, mini marquee etc etc. Make me an offer I can't refuse

Just out of curiosity, whats sort of high scores do you people have on ST2? I've just managed to breach the 8 million mark but Im sure someone said they have 15 million. I find that hard to believe. I can manage over 500 close kills but my score isn't anywhere near 14 million. So where am I supposed to majik the extra 7 million from?

15 million seems impossible to me. My high score is 14,145,770 with Lulu, I did manage something in the 14.1 million range with Toy too but that was on my old 1-slot board which has since been replaced by a 4-slot, so I don't remember if that score was higher.

Let's see... squeezing points out of the game... I'm assuming you can finish the game on one credit...

500 close-range kills?? are you sure you're not getting that confused with "Multiplying"? My "Close Attack" stats are usually a little over 300. And I am going all out trying to get as many as possible.

One important part of getting a high score is picking up the gold for the 19990 bonus... basically watch the animation of it, when it goes from the gold bars to the coin, that's the end of the animation. You have to pick it up right at the end there for the maximum 19990 points. The 19990 Bonus is always over 100 for me at game's end.

At the end of Stage 1, don't shoot at the boss at all at first. Let the human enemies come out. They do nothing but close-range attacks, so just take them out with your own and get a ton of X6 kills. You can get around 1.5 million or more just from this one part alone.

Take the Naval Base route, not the Air Base route. The Air Base route sucks because you can't earn too many points on the train stage on Stage 3.

Um... nothing else comes to mind right now... any other questions? I'm always willing to discuss the art of high scores on Shock Troopers, whether it's part 1 or 2nd Squad.
