WTF? I totally agree with Kyo?!? Something's wrong here
Anyway. It was mentioned that 2nd Squad has better bosses. This is true. They put more effort into differentiating each boss. In Shock Troopers 1 you end up fighting big tanks and boats as bosses on multiple levels... and they all have similar patterns. And then there are the human bosses, which do similar stuff. The bosses in ST2S are much tougher to take down because there's a lot more to learn about them...
...but then again, they could afford to do that when there's only 7 unique levels in the game (Mission 1 is always the same, Missions 2 and 3 can be on Naval Base or Air Base route... and then 4 and 5 are the same). Shock Troopers 1 has a total of 17 different levels to explore in the game, so a little boss overlap is understandable.
What else does 2nd Squad have going for it?
-Vehicles! Earning more points for charged up shots in them is cool
-A bonus multiplier that steadily increases after consecutive close-range kills... I like
-Invincibility during close-range attacks
-Better implementation of the bomb system, since they can be earned by picking them up from close-range attacks instead of at designated points in the level (like ST1)
-Angel (good call, Fran)
um, that's mostly it. The thing I still hate most about 2nd Squad is how most attacks do over half a bar of damage (even when using Leon)... which wouldn't be much of a problem if LIFE-UPS WEREN'T SO FUCKING RARE. You can get them only by using close-range attacks/bombs on regular enemies, they never appear at guaranteed points (and no extra life is awarded after finishing a level). So you've got to take risks to get that life-up back... and then once you get it it restores what, like 25% of the bar? You need three of those just to recover from ONE HIT! And then there's the weapon system... when you've got a special weapon you can't lose life, but you will lose "ammunition" on the gun. That makes no fucking sense whatsoever. It does make the game a LITTLE easier because then you're guaranteed to stay alive if you take a hit... a lot of times when the ammo is almost out, I'll take a hit on purpose just so I can have some invincibility. But the whole special weapon system is a double-edged sword, because you can't receive life-ups when you're using one... instead you'll receive the green E boxes that boost your ammo. Whoop dee fucking doo.
Oh, and then there's the music. 2nd Squad has some pretty good tunes. I love the Mission 1, 4, 5 tunes... as well as the 1st and 4th boss tunes. But the soundtrack on Shock Troopers 1... Mere words can't express the amount of enjoyment I've gotten from the music in that game. Hands-down the best music I've ever heard in a video game, cartridge or CD. Each track is perfection except for maybe one weak "ambient" one...
I'm starting to ramble. Let's summarize:
Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad is a great game
but Shock Troopers is a masterpiece
