A Few UK Questions About My AES

Hiya all,

I recently got myself an unboxed, no manual Japanese AES Neo Geo cart system with Samurai Shodown and the original joystick.

I had been looking for one for ages and I am so happy I got one, I have been wanting one for years ever since I was quite little. Now after my purchase I really need some more info, basically I just need to ask a few questions? :)

1) The system came with a Japanese plug, where can I buy the transformer for it to work on the UK power supply and for how much?

2) The joystick I got has a cracked top (i.e the ball on top of the joystick) is this common amongst these original joysticks or has mine just been broken etc?

3) Lastly I'm looking to purchase a second original joystick, and a copy of Soccer Brawl does anyone have these to sell or know where I could get them in the UK for a cheap price(not Ebay)

Thanks for any help you can give me

It's great to finally have a Neo Geo :)

1) E-mail this guy: lee@videogameimports.com

he owns this website: <a href="http://www.videogameimports.com" target="_blank">Import store near middlesbrough</a>

i like him - great service, he has a few in stock right now ranging from £18 to £45

click on hardware (near top left) then do a search (along the top) multi system / accessories / all

2) Naw thats very common - most controllers have it

3) Joystick wise he has a neo cd controller or this for £40
asciistick.jpg

as for soccer brawl:

try Laurent @ <a href="http://www.neoayato.com" target="_blank">Excellent neo seller</a>

he has one in stock right now for 72usd

welcome to the neo and the neo forums

Stand by for you to max your credit card - a couple of times over

ahhh thank you for your help, much appreciated :)

The only thing is, which of those step downs would you recommend? I'm not too savvy at this and none really specify the Neo Geo or have a good explanation of what step down it is, i.e. do I need to plug my japanese plug in first and then into the transformer or just plug the step down straight in the back etc? Any help would be appreciated.

Any other import shops that you know who have an orginal joytsick at all for sale?

And this is a question to everyone, just to put my mind at rest hehe.

Is it me or does the Neo Geo plastic i.e the one on the main unit squeek and stretch etc? Basically I mean when you pick it up you can press down on the plastic and it makes a noise rather than a hard shell like say a PS2 etc?

PS I'd love Windjammers, but wont I have to pay a lot on top of it if I order it from the states?

Thanks once again for any and all help :)

personally mate - go for the dearest one as it has the greater range and it can do a couple of consoles at the same time

the cheaper teh step down the more chance you have of it over heating and blowing up

basically the quick reply to how a transformer works

plug the step down into the mains outlet and then plug the aes power supply (2 pin) into the step down - america and Japan use the same 2 pin plugs so it will be universal

its a shame Windjammers is a little more expensive than the normal games of that time - but personally this games price isnt because its rare or hype

Just because is a great game and alot of neo fans appreciate the gameplay and enjoy playing it

The Step-down: Just pop into Maplins and ask for any Heavy-duty step down that converts UK current to a US/Jap one. Should cost about £20-£30
.
To be honest it dosen't need to be that heavy duty as the Neo is a fairly low-power machine - but a heavy-duty one will last you longer and will do for any future import consoles you may buy.

The step-down will connect straight into a UK plug, and provide a socket for the jap/US plug to go into. So its, Neo plug into the stepdown, and then step-down into the plug socket.

Joysticks: Ravengames and Telegames sell official Joystics, but they tend to charge extortionate prices (especially Telegames - total rip-off merchants).

Importing games: Well its usually cheaper to buy stuff from america - untill you factor in shipping and import charges.
On any home cart you can expect to pay about $36 shipping (thats just from rough memory, buying from NCSX), but if import charges catch you it'll be an extra £25-ish which usually puts the cost of the cart at almost the same as the price of, say videogameimports.com.
Its something of a balancing act, though its usually about £10 cheaper to buy from the US (assuming yer just buying from online shops).

Hope it helps.

First of all welcome to the bbs, nice to see another UK based aes gamer. :)

Ok, whatever you do DO NOT buy anything from Ravengames. Their stuff is expensive (overpriced) and the condition of thier stuff is usually horrid. Also the guy who runs the place is a first class tosser who literally knows next to nothing about the neo geo market other than he thinks he can make a fast buck out of it.

DO NOT buy any games from Telegames. Their prices are so high, the guy who dreams up the prices of thier carts must have a serious crack problem. Some of their accessory prices aren't too bad as the stuff is supposed to be brand new. I think they stock old style sticks at about £75. That's expensive, but I know of no other place on the planet that stocks new, boxed, old style sticks.

Basically, if you're sticking to buying from the UK you're fucked. No two ways about it, the UK market sucks major ass because all the retailers (both online and on the high street charge too much).

Videogameimports.com (based in Middlesborough) are the cheapest UK online retailer for aes products, and occasionally have some good deals. However, on newer titles you can still import cheaper from the US and Far East (believe me, I've done the math).

So to recap:

<a href="http://www.ravengames.co.uk" target="_blank">www.ravengames.co.uk</a> = <img src="graemlins/blowtop.gif" border="0" alt="[Blow Top]" /> <img src="graemlins/veryangry.gif" border="0" alt="[Very Angry]" />

<a href="http://www.telegames.co.uk" target="_blank">www.telegames.co.uk</a> = <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" /> <img src="graemlins/eek2.gif" border="0" alt="[Eek 2]" />

<a href="http://www.videogameimports.com" target="_blank">www.videogameimports.com</a> = <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

The best way to get carts is from sellers outside the UK. Even after you factor in shipping (always use EMS) you'll save money.

You'll find a lot of good deals here on the selling forum. However, be wary of who you deal with. If you're unsure post and ask the other members for feedback. We've had a lot of rotten apples around here recently, including one huge scamming shit bag from the UK.

Most UK import shops sell stepdown converters. Make sure you get a good quality one otherwise your aes will be making lots of expensive noises.

Anyway, hope the above helps you out.

Which he obviously cannot do and you can't claim the VAT back either.

Thought you'd left Gib now anyway?

bought one cart from vgi, a kof98
was definately NOT MINT, as stated.

never again. Sure other people are fine with them, but does that wrinkled ww7 insert in the scan belong to the 'MINT' copy they own?

I hope not

Firstly thanks for all your replies, it's nice to see a few UK'ers on here too so thanks for helping me out with everything, I appreciate it :)

I do definately need a new stick but £75 new seems like an awful lot of money for a joystick hehe I can see a lot of open wallet surgery with this Neo Geo hehe, it'll be worth it though :)

And what's this about using a Megadrive plug, I have every MegaDrive known to man so please explain? I'm assuming you mean the PSU?

What wattage PSU or is it just the normal MegaDrive plug or a special plug? I don't really wanna plug it in for it to blow.

Anymore info would be appreciated and thanks once again for all of your help :)

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=803864468" target="_blank">New kidney style cd controller</a>

those auctions are within the Uk, if your not a member of ebay i would join now if i were you

basically the megadrive psu is a single spear type the same as the neo and its voltage is 110 - 240volts (50+ watts)so in theory it should work fine and i know some people that use one

but........... me i'm not convinced

but i guess thats up to you

Ok have found an old MegaDrive adapter it says this on the front:

MODEL NO: 3008-05
INPUT: 240v~50hz
OUTPUT: 10v-500mA

Sega AC MAINS ADAPTER

On the back of my Neo Geo it says:

RATING: 8w

USE PRO POW

And on the japanese plug I got with it:

AC100V 50/60Hz 38VA

DC5V 3A

I'm guessing by the ouput of 10v that's too much for my Neo Geo?

Or is this the wrong adapter and if so what should it have on the front?

Ta once again and sorry for asking all these questions, just very eager to give it a try and not sure how long it is until I can afford a stepdown, ta :)

Hey. while the british camaraderie is flowing and everything, and especially whilst you're chatting about how great windjammers is, do you reckon one of you bastards might help me out with <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=18&t=006607" target="_blank">this</a>? Come on, I just know one of you has the aes insert and a flatbed scanner to hand... ;)

Btw, buster I remember chatting to you a few weeks ago about buying an mvs copy of sidekicks2 off of you which didn't sell on ebay? At least I think it was you... I can't even find the damn emails now. Anyways, presuming it was you, are you still up for that... I never got round to finishing the deal coz work caught up with me and I kind of forgot about it... :( On the other hand, if it wasn't you, just ignore me and I'll probably go away and mumble incoherently elsewhere ;)
