MVS memory card - questions

I just got and installed the memory card reader in my 1-slot. Now all I need to know is if it works. And I can't seem to tell.
I went to the test menu and it says "insert memory card" at one of the tests. I do, after which nothing happens.

I have two unused SNK memory cards--only need one but they were sold as a set so there you go. Even though they're new I realize they could both have dead batteries. I have the reader installed in the control panel and I believe I have all the wires connected correctly, but since they were not labeled, maybe not. Which slot on the motherboard plugs into which slot on the control panel PCB?

I don't have the small four-pin wire connected on the CP PCB; no wire came with my kit. Is that power to the headphones? If so, that's not important to me.

Is there some way to tell if this thing is working right? What should happen if it is? What's a good MVS game to test it with to lay down a save? What exactly is saved to the card--characters, progress? Will it remember more than just the last 8 games' worth of high scores now?

Any advice is great...I have the manual for a 4-slot and the FZ 1-slot, but not the manual for my old-style 1-slot. :/

bad.
try swapping the connector cables of the memcard reader around. they have to be hooked up the right way, and noone bothered to mark them in any way so you know which is the right one.

play metal slug or any fighting game for 1-2 stages, die, and at the continue screen it SHOULD ask you if you want to save. on most games, you can continue at the same stage or fight, as if you simply chose "continue", or for the metal slug games, you actually get a level select of the levels you beat.

nope. that's still saved to internal ram, no influence on the scores.

Swapping one end of them around, or both ends? Are the two cables identical?

I figred you'd know this stuff, Arakon. Thanks.

I noticed that on my 6 slot cabs the small 4 pin socket is not used, its just the two 60 pin sockets, one is for player one data, the other for player two. I do not have a card so have never used these. Have one on the way

swap the left cable for the right on one end only (they're identical, just need to have the right sockets connected with each other)
the 4 pin connector is for the headphones, btw.. it hooks straight into the 4 pin connector on the mvs board.

That's what I figured, one cable per player...but still no dice. Right now I have the left-most (furthest back) connector from the motherboard connected to the left-most CP connector.

What should appear on the test menu when I plug in the card? Mine's still at "insert memory card" and I don't know what the next step would be.

I can have a friend test the memory cards themselves on his home system after the holidays, to see if maybe that's it. But there does not appear to be too much else to go wrong with the installation, so perhaps the system's just dead. Could be the wire (though it looks undamaged), could be the pins, could be something I'm overlooking.

Hmm...I have double-checked the cables. They all look firm and they're all clicked into place. I have tried swapping them back and forth, too. Any other things I can look into on this? Thanks...

Word to the wise: triple-check the cables. Apparently there's one flaky connection that simply didn't want to make contact, and some pushing and prodding and wiggling made it work just fine. It's all good. Thanks for the advice!
